too much too fast

This book is stronger than tranquilizers if you have trouble sleeping! But that aside, it plows right into discussion without establishing a strong base for new concepts. What descriptions are given feel too abstract to be useful (based on having a teacher later explain and clarify). Many vocabulary terms aren't defined, but rather used in an example. If you don't know the word's meaning to start with, the example is useless. Thank goodness for the glossary, but why should the reader have to spend the entire time flipping back and forth? I don't have any experience with another text, but I feel that this isn't a great book for someone just getting seriously into research. As a graduate student with a strong nursing background, I still found this book very hard to wade through.

This is a very wordy, at times obscure text to read. It contains very detailed descriptions of each method to be utilized for the reader to get a grasp on how to apply the methods in research. Found the text to be rather dry, but perhaps someone more engaged in the material will find it more interesting.

About the Author

Camara Laye was born in 1928 in the village of Koroussa, French Guinea. He was still in his twenties and studying engineering in France when he wrote The Dark Child. He died in Senegal in 1980.

Memoir of an African Childhood

Camara Laye was one of the first sub-saharan writers to become well-known outside of Africa. "L'Enfant Noir" or "The Dark Child" (also titled "The African Child"?) was published in 1953 when the author was twenty-five and living in France. It is a pleasantly nostalgic memoir of a childhood spent in the town of Kouroussa (French Guinea, now Guinea) and the village of Tindican, his mother's birthplace. Chapter by chapter Camara recounts his childhood memories: his father's work as a goldsmith and his position in society, his parent's magic, village life, the rice harvest, elementary Koranic education, circumcision and young men's secret society, secondary education in Conakry, girls and courtship, and his departure to continue his studies in France. After almost half a century in print, this deserves to be called a classic. [Note: some authorities state that his family name is Camara (also spelled Kamara) and his given name is Laye; the text supports this at one point. If using search engines to look for information on this author it may be useful to try both versions of his name.]

A beautifully textured, fluid and organic autobiography, Camara Laye offers readers a piece of his life in The Dark Child. As part of the Malinke community in Upper Guinea, Laye captures the layered tradition and culture of his community, deemed, perhaps by most, to be simplistic or primitive compared to today's modern standards. Yet it is exactly from Layes descriptions of the traditions of his community that we can begin to understand the psychology of the author. Each chapter is rich with imagery, and his words smack of sincerity and innocence, bringing about an effortless quality and flow to his work--it is as if we are there with Laye experiencing his many transitions, from boyhood to manhood. His descriptions of the communal lifestyle of his people is remarkable. Laye's works like other modern African authors reveal the realities of colonization, and help readers to appreciate and celebrate indigenous African traditions.

It took me a long time to read this book.

I first got this book in junior high by a family friend but never bothered to read it until I entered high school. Not having anything to read, I took it upon myself to read the book. I found myself intrigued by the author's way of life during colonialism and his upbringing in a village and his graduation from high school. It was sad that one of his classmates died unexpectedly. Wanting to find out some more about this author I looked up a book of African authors. Unfortuately he passed away in 1980. He is a great writer and wished that I had read it soon as it was given to me.

differant times

I enjoyed it as it was for a book club selection.. I found the differant points of view from differnt educators amusing. No one seemed to be able to relate that it was the 1800s.
When I read something from another time, I try and place myself there. In doing this I get to be one of the prime charcators.

A wonderful collection of stories by Flaubert

Flaubert's collection of "Three Tales" brings together a wonderful set of short stories. Working from contemporary to ancient and in various modes of realism, Flaubert delves into the spiritual depths of his characters. The first story, "A Simple Heart" is the best of the group. In this story, Flaubert tells the story Felicite, a loyal servant to an uninteresting patron. Flaubert quickly covers her whole life, from her difficult childhood and through her many attachments to her death. Felicite is a woman who feels love deeply, but Flaubert's presentation is very detached and never maudlin. The last great love of Felicite's life is a parrot (which also inspired Julian Barnes' "Flaubert's Parrot") who comes to symbolize the holy spirit for her. It would have been easy for Flaubert to portray Felicite's simplicity as an object of scorn or irony, but he treats her faithfully and never passes judgment on her actions or thoughts. Her story is beautifully told and stands up well to any short story I know.

The second tale, "The Legend of Saint Julian the Hospitaller," is a retelling of the legendary Saint's life. Flaubert is in a completely different mode here; he is comfortable in the quick and magical progression typical of medieval tales. Flaubert's eye for detail makes some of the scenes more horrific and as such more effective. In particular, the scenes of carnage while hunting and the scene with the leper are particularly well drawn.

The final tale, "Herodias," is a retelling of the story of John the Baptist's execution. Here, Flaubert delves into the emotions of religious fervor and political intrigue. He focuses not on Herodias or John, but on Herod. He portrays Herod as caught between competing forces: Rome and the tribes outside his kingdom; his wife and the proconsul; pharisees, essenes, and the fledgling movement spawned by Jesus. All of these competing voices make the story a bit disjointed at times, but once again Flaubert's realism lends a detached feel to the entire story.

Margaret Drabble's introduction to the volume is useful in how she ties the "Three Tales" into Flaubert's career and surroundings. The cathedral at Rouen, for example, has a series of stained glass windows depicting Saint Julian's story, and it also has a statue of the beheading of John the Baptist. Such details help bring the stories into greater clarity, though I recommend reading the introduction last if you have never read the stories, so as to be able to come to the stories fresh.

An Introduction to Flaubert

Three tales: One "modern" short-story, one medieval legend, and one historical sketch. Three diverse tales, all colorful and engaging. Reading these tales makes one wish Flaubert had written more. Other reviewers have described each story in more detail so I'll keep my descriptions brief. Beginning with "A Simple Heart", the story of a lonely servant-girl named Felicite who devotes her life to helping a single mother raise her children in a small Normandy village; moving back in time to the medieval era and a capitvating re-telling the legend of "St. Julian Hospitator" who devotes himself to God after being haunted by the thousands of animals he'd hunted and killed as a brash, arrogant youth; far back to the time of Christ, when "Herodias", King Herod's head-strong wife, instigates the beheading of John the Baptist, unintentionally paving the way for Jesus Christ himself; Flaubert has created three "religious" tales that plainly and simply illustrate the status of Christianity at different times, in different places. Some readers of Flaubert find undertones of sarcasm in these tales (more prevelant in "Sentimental Education" for sure), but I really believe he's attempting to be as non-judgmental as possible, simply telling it the way it is; or was. It seems to me that Flaubert's intention with these stories (especially "A Simple Heart" which to me has the most character depth & uniqueness of the three) is to not only showcase his literary skills, but to challenge himself to write about three seemingly unconnected eras and linking them by a common thread. Flaubert's descriptions and details are always of the highest caliber (although sometimes tiresome if one's not used to his style) but ultimately, each tale stands on its own, making "Three Tales" an excellent introduction to one of the most influential, and talented writers of all time.

About the Author
Richard A. Burgess is a retired U.S. Coast Guard commissioned officer. His first 10 years in the Coast Guard were in electronics technology and maintenance. His last 10 years of service were all computer-science related; he was the primary software design engineer for the Coast Guard's Commuinication Station Control System, and he headed the Coast Guard's Software Development Standards Team. He taught computer electronics technology at the Computer Learning Center of Washington, D.C., for two years, and he consulted in and around Washington under the guise of the D-Group. He is now the General Manager of Optipat, Inc. and Faxpat, Inc. in Alexandria, Virginia, high-technology, patent-trademark and copyright imaging firms. He would rather be on a beach somewhere in Florida and is working to that end.

Looking over the other comments, this book appears to be muchin demand. I'm glad I bought a copy years ago when it first came out,even though I haven't gotten around to reading it until now. I've been interested in writing an OS for years, and I knew I'd want the information in this book sooner or later, so I bought it for my library. Good thing, since it's now out of print. (And no, you can't buy it from me. I need it too!)
When I did a Google search for "MMURTL" (the name of the OS described in the book), I discovered that Sensory Publishing is offering this book online, under the name "MMURTL-V1.0"....

Practical and theoretical, easily understood, excellent book

This book provides someone with whose skilled in C and
assembly with enough knowledge to build a full fledged
real-time operating system. Although it can be used as
a practical text, all example source code is for the Intel
80386+ processers. The book allows you to do just what the
title says it does, and in a wonderfully easy to understand
way. Although if you really are going to set out and do it,
it is suggested that you have a refrence to the platform you
are using near you. Also contains the occasional bit of
humour. Ironically enough, the "sample" operating system
provided in the book technologically far outstrips a certain
commercial OS.... worried Bill :->?

A Good Start for the Right Audience

This books is a great introduction to very simplified concepts related to OS design, and gives you code to look at for an extremely primitive 32-bit OS. I think that it's a great starting point, as long as you understand that it is fairly dated, doesn't comport entirely with modern techniques, terminology, and PC hardware. I think by the time you absorb the information in this book, it will demystify the process of writing an OS, but you will also begin to recognize the limitations of the author's approach. I think there's a lot of educational benefit in a very primitive kernel like this one, because it's a lot less daunting than more professional projects.
