About the Author

Jeremy Gibson is a lecturer teaching computer game design for the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science department at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor and is the founder of ExNinja Interactive, LLC. From 2009 to 2013, he was an Assistant Professor teaching game design and protyping for the Interactive Media and Games Division of the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts, which was the number one game design school in North America throughout his tenure there. Jeremy serves the IndieCade independent game festival as the Chair for Education and Advancement, where he is responsible for the IndieXchange and GameU conference tracks, and he has spoken at the Game Developers Conference every year since 2009.

Jeremy earned a Master of Entertainment Technology degree from Carnegie Mellon University’s Entertainment Technology Center in 2007 and a Bachelor of Science degree in Radio, Television, and Film from the University of Texas at Austin in 1999. Jeremy has worked as a programmer and prototyper for companies such as Human Code and frog design, has taught classes for Great Northern Way Campus (in Vancouver, BC), Texas State University, the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Austin Community College, and the University of Texas at Austin, and has worked for Walt Disney Imagineering, Maxis, and Electronic Arts/Pogo.com, among others. While in graduate school, his team created the game Skyrates, which won the Silver Gleemax Award at the 2008 Independent Games Festival. Jeremy also apparently has the distinction of being the first person to ever teach game design in Costa Rica.

Good, but not for a complete novice

If you are brand new to programming, this might not be the best book to use as an introduction to the trifecta of Unity, programming, and game design. I would consider it more of an advanced beginner to intermediate level book. If you already know a little programming or if you have read one of the other Unity by Example books, then is a great second step on your path to becoming a game developer.

I found Part One of the book, Game Design and Paper Prototyping, to be the most difficult of the three sections. It reads like a college text book with lots of theory and philosophical discussions. Part One begins with a lengthy discussion of what a "game" actually is, discussing the conflicting definitions presented by several people. Next comes a discussion on Game Analysis Frameworks. Mr. Gibson discusses three Frameworks developed by other individuals, and then presents his own Framework. He compares and contrasts his new framework to its predecessors, and explains how they are different and alike. Heavy stuff. Honestly I only made it through Chapter 4 before I put Part One on hold, and moved on to Part Two. I will get back to Part One day, I promise.

Part Two begins with more definitions, a summary about the advantages of using Unity and C#, and a brief introduction to the C# programming language, but you quickly move on to the Unity installation and running Unity's demo game: Angry Bots. Next comes a very, very brief (1/2 page) explanation of Unity's various windows. Your first Unity program is the standard "Hello World!", but then you get to "Unity-fy" it by adding some falling cubes. Snazzy! The rest of the Part Two - Chapters 19-27 - include hard-core lessons/lectures in various computer programming topics: variables, Vector3s, Quaternion, boolean operations, conditionals, loops, lists, arrays, functions, object-oriented classes. My favorite chapter was the one on Debugging. You need to learn to love debugging if you are going to be a programmer.

Part Three (page 419) starts the fun stuff: building games using Unity. The first game is Apple Picker, and I found it liberating when Mr. Gibson talks about using "programmer art" which is just a placeholder for the "real" art that will be incorporated later. He stresses that you don't need fantastic art to get your game up and running. I know it is common sense, but it was nice to hear those words from an expert. My new mantra is, "Don't worry about the art, just start coding." As for the actual code instructions, they are clear and concise, but they are not what I would call the step-by-step hand-holding variety. How to do something is fully explained once, and after that it is assumed that you will remember the steps. If you don't remember you are directed to the index so you can look up the instructions. If you are new to programming AND Unity this method of instruction might get a little frustrating. The examples/prototypes in this book also have a level of code complexity which is much greater than in other absolute beginner Unity books. You will learn a lot more fancy coding tricks, and not so obvious ways to accomplish a task. Again, this may be intimidating if you have never coded before.

So in summary if you have never opened a programming book before, it might be better to start with a book like Unity by Example or Unity in 24 Hours and save this one till you are a little more comfortable with navigating Unity. If you have used Unity before or if you have programmed in the past, this book is a great place to start.

A clear introduction to creating games with Unity and C#

Part 1 of this book (game-design theory) is a clear and illuminating overview of what is obviously a big topic. It makes clear that there's a lot more preparation required when designing a game than many designers realise.

Part 2 introduces C#. If you've programmed before, you can skim most of it. Chapter 18 ("Hello World") is a must-read, though, as it introduces Unity and demonstrates how to create a project and add elements to it. (Not having used Unity before, I was shocked that I could create a particle storm with only two-lines of code.)

Part 3 walks the reader through creating eight games of increasing complexity.

I recommend this book to you if you'd like to learn how to create well designed games using Unity and C#.

When i was looking for a book that covered Unity programming (C# that is) i found a few books that seemed like they could very well get the job done. This book is brand new and full of good research. It does not teach you how to program until about page 250. The amount of text on each page is enormous, full of information. Im on chapter 4 already and i feel like before i get to the programming side of this book i will have a better understanding of what i will even be needing to program. There is 8 games that you program near the last part of the book after a thorough intro to C# script in unity. The logic that he programs into the games is broad and clever enough to get you on your feet, and there are many tools and tricks that follow.

In conclusion: This book goes deep into game design and getting your ideas into code.
I have a large library of books covering animation, programming, art, game design.... and this book seems like one i will be happy to finish.
Cheers! 5 out of 5 for how much research is in this book alone Plus how clear he talks in his text.

It's a great way to look at health and fitness, but I think it still lacks ways for workplace involvement. The solution is that there is no solution. People have to want to do it, to want to change, and only they can decide that. Books like this are great for different perspectives and motivation.

Drawing on an eight-year survey of 825 black and white female managers, and juxtaposing the stories of seven black and seven white women executives at some of the most prestigious companies in America, this book illustrates the profound impact of "early life lessons" on women's professional identities and "reveals the power of geography and social location when combined with race." Foregrounding "the first generation of [black women] to hold managerial or executive positions" (many took their first jobs in the 1970s), the authors show that "the combined effects of race and gender create not only very different organizational identities and career experiences, but also very separate paths to the doors of corporate America." Bell and Nkomo (business professors at Dartmouth College and South Africa's UNISA Graduate School of Business Leadership, respectively) are particularly adept at delineating the prejudices that create special problems for black women in the executive suite, without losing sight of the experiences they share with white women. They conclude that while there are crucial differences in the experiences of white and black female executives, the similarities suggest the enduring power of gender discrimination in the workplace and "the extent to which managerial careers are steeped in patriarchal ideology." An epilogue "offers suggestions on how to begin the sometimes difficult dialogue between black and white women executives. Bell and Nkomo have provided a well-researched and thought-provoking look at some important aspects of race and gender in corporate America.

"Our separate ways" is usually used in reference to a point of departure, but here it describes the quite different paths black and white female managers have followed to achieve success. Bell and Nkomo have been tracking the relationships among race and gender and advancement for more than 10 years. They discuss the results of their research, which included extensive life history interviews with 80 black women and 40 white women and in-depth surveys of 825 black and white women managers. Because "black women executives remain a mystery to others in their organizations," Bell and Nkomo focus on the individual stories and personal experiences of 14 women. These poignant narratives highlight six "significant flashpoints" in the women's journeys: breaking into management, adjusting to the corporate environment, encountering barriers, overcoming barriers, making change in the work environment, and coming to terms with personal life choices. Bell and Nkomo dive straight to the heart of the matter. They base their findings on comprehensive personal interviews of African-American and white women working as managers or executives. Ultimately, the authors hit the reader over the head with the obvious: People from strikingly different backgrounds bring profound personal differences to the workplace. Too often, organizations stupidly attempt homogenizing everyone into minor variations on the existing (typically---older, white, and male) leadership theme. Unusually (Bell and Nkomo cited no such cases), organizations may wisely embrace the differences so that the organization and its people benefit from a more perceptive and inclusive world view.
Folks who need not spend their working hours "fitting in" contribute (A) more (B) less to the organization. Leaders who accept their people for who and what they are get (A) more (B) less from their subordinates. Guess where the authors suggest the readers take their outfits.

Imagining and working with the Other

If you are wondering why the Black woman in your section of your company doesn't seem to want to socialize with you or seems guarded around her White co-workers or why the White women in your organization get all riled up about sexism but are silent when it comes to racism this is the book for you. I recommend this book along with Divided Sisters for those who really want Black and White women to unite in the workplace. These two tomes will give you more than a clue. They'll give you guidelines as how to build a truly "diverse" workplace where everyone is welcomed AS THEY ARE and not as stereotypes others want them to play out. If you are a Black woman, you'll understand why you see your work status merely as a "job" and not as a career and why you feel so much like an outsider looking in at your organization.
The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is that I wanted more in-depth analysis of how the White female managers confronted the idea of Black women as equals (and not just on the job), something I've experienced that White women have a difficult time doing in the workplace.

Another great read from a talented author.

This was a really great book with two emotionally raw, extremely passionate characters.

Sadie was the most appealing character to me in this book. Don't get me wrong, Elias was super sexy and wonderful but Sadie really shined.

If I had to describe her in one word it would be brave. Everything she experiences is completely new to her as shes had a very sheltered childhood, but she's not afraid.
She faces these new feelings, and experiences head on. Sadie is not the shy, weak, naive girl who blushes at every kind word thrown her way. She also sees the mistakes that others around her have made and she learns from them. She's a smart girl who has the ability to bring a man to his knees....literally. She's essentially the best type of female lead character.
The authors note stated that this book will have a sequel. I'm a fan of sequels and can totally see the appeal to a second book. It's not necessarily that there are unresolved issues, it's just that there is clearly more story to tell. Even secondary characters some serious issues that could use some fleshing out.

Also, at the end of this book is an excerpt for Masterpiece. I'm looking forward to this book AS WELL AS a sequel to one of my top 5 favorite series EVER the BILLIONAIRE!

Wowza! This story takes Hot and Steamy Lust to a whole new level of Awesome!! I Love that Sadie is a sweet young songbird dreamer and falls totally in lust for the worldly burned-out sexy rockstar Elias! Sadie and Elias have like Fireworks in July chemistry that Is amazing! A Must Read!

My Review:
This story is about Sadie. She just graduated from a very strict catholic boarding school where she was stifled her entire life. She is one of four girls and she's seen two of her sisters get knocked up and knocked around emotionally by getting sexually involved with the wrong guys. But regardless of that, she's willing to do and explore it all when a sexy stranger moves in next door and catches her naked and masturbating in the pond between their properties.

Sadie wants to go to Nashville and become the next big thing. What she doesn't realize is that her fling is the current big thing. The sex is definitely hot and heavy between these two. Sadie epitomizes young and horny and frankly, I hated that for her. She has prime examples in her house about what happens when you don't use your brain...at least a little bit. I know she's young, but...ack. I would rather have seen her character as horny, but smart rather than flighty and way, way too blonde. She gives blondes a bad name.

I love that she's a musician and seems to truly have talent. I love that Elias has the connections to help her get someplace quick, but I hate how completely naive she is and wish she had been just a bit tougher and more forward-thinking. If that had been the case, I think I really could have loved this book.

For my rating on this book, this is one of those, 'It's not you, it's me' situations. I think I'm simply over the 18 yo virgin who's up for anything even though she has no clue. I could have really loved this book without the over the top sexual escapades and focus, because I did truly enjoy the story behind it. But the author wanted to go with erotic romance and while I love a good erotic story, this one just didn't quite do it for me on that side of it.

And no, the story is definitely not over. But for me, I think I'm okay with being done with these characters.

Excellent book! As a retired business owner coming up nine years...it's time! Had an idea and thought about 'cranking' up another. It's amazing how much you forget and though I have many on this subject matter - this book gives you a detailed 'condensed' how to...and I'm not wild about 'filling the pages with fluff'. And added personal advice! Pick a product or biz that 'you love'...then it's not really 'work'...money is secondary and will come when you enjoy what you're doing! BTW - Amazon and the seller shipped it out quickly and pleased with the whole transaction.

"I think that the greatest strengths are that it is clear (written in a student-friendly language), relatively concise, and provides a good coverage of what I think students need to know about principles of economics. I think that the style of the text is personable and is easy for students to read without being condescending. In terms of the coverage, as I noted above, we cover the entire text in my one-semester class, and cover just about exactly the entire text - no more, and only a little (two chapters) less."

"I find navigation process very simple. I am very impressed with Meet your tutor - Master the Learning Objectives section (that is so well planned out and organized). If students are having problems with any of the material and they're serious about being successful in this class, it is impossible for them not to understand the material after doing suggested activities in this section. "Ask the Author" video clips are interesting and clever. "Economic Applications" section also has good navigation system and can be useful for teachers and students both."

About the Author
N. Gregory Mankiw is Robert M. Beren Professor of Economics and Chair of the Department of Economics at Harvard University. He studied economics at Princeton University and MIT. He has taught macroeconomics, microeconomics, statistics, and principles of economics. Professor Mankiw is a prolific writer and a regular participant in academic and policy debates. His research includes work on price adjustment, consumer behavior, financial markets, monetary and fiscal policy, and economic growth. His published articles have appeared in academic journals such as the AMERICAN ECONOMIC REVIEW, JOURNAL OF POLITICAL ECONOMY, and QUARTERLY JOURNAL OF ECONOMICS and in more widely accessible forums including THE NEW YORK TIMES, THE WASHINGTON POST, THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, and FORTUNE. In addition to his teaching, research, and writing, Professor Mankiw has been a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, an adviser to the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and the Congressional Budget Office, and a member of the ETS test development committee for the advanced placement exam in economics. From 2003 to 2005, he served as chairman of the President's Council of Economic Advisers. A beautiful introduction

This was the textbook (in an earlier edition) that introduced me to economics back in high school. I decided to take the AP exam in the subject, even though my school offered no such course. Between this text and a test prep book, I was able to ace the exams; but more importantly, I was immersed in a subject so fascinating that I'm now studying it as a PhD student.

Throughout the book, Mankiw highlights differences in opinion between economists and "laymen," and to examine where those differences come from. For instance, rent ceilings are a popular policy that 93% of economists (as of a 1992 survey) say "reduce both the quantity and the quality of available housing." Mankiw explains why economists are so sure of this in compelling, intuitive terms, without demanding that students master calculus or statistical methods.

Interested students should also subscribe to Greg Mankiw's excellent blog to keep up with the latest news in the ever-evolving field of economics.

This book is the same as the newer version with a different model here and there but otherwise this edition and the 5th edition are the same. So save money by buying this one.

Wonderful book, teaching materials ok

This is a wonderful, wonderful book to introduce students to economics. The faculty materials are not quite as wonderful. We are on chapter 3 and one of my students found an error in a chapter on-line self quiz. I have found errors in the test bank and there are some ambiguous questions. The slides, however, match the high quality of the text.
Easily five stars except for the problems noted.
