Very helpful!

I only had two weeks to prepare for my final, and within two weeks I went through all of the practice problems. The study guide problems are similar to the actual test problems. However, the study guide is more math-based, and the final usually has less math and more theory. You won't have to make a lot of calculations on the actual test due to time constraints. It is also too difficult to finish the test if every problem were a math problem. Some formulas are given on the test. This book is mostly review if you studied throughout the semester. Have your notes out for quick reference. Drill through the problems once or twice. Don't worry too much about the math (although you should be able to do it anyway), and just understand the concepts really well. My final had 70 questions, and I only had two hours. Once I started the test, I noticed that some questions were pulled from the study guide which is made up of questions from past final exams. If you do the study guide, you will be able to recognize some study guide questions, and this should give you the upper hand. Also, I scored a 52/70 on my final which probably puts me in the 80-90th percentile. Keep in mind that I only had two weeks to prep. This study guide was definitely helpful and easy to understand, although some questions were phrased strangely.

Lack of content but cheap

As someone that took both the gen chem I and II exams, I wouldn't recommend buying this because the content in the book is so condensed and what frustrated me the most was the practice questions had no explanations ...only the answers! I wish the authors would provide explanations for the practice problems. The book is relatively cheap (if you find a used copy rather than buying it off the publisher's website) so if you want some "practice" preparing for the ACS, buy the book but my warning is DO NOT rely on the book solely for your ACS exam

Not a replacement for studying but a great suppliment

A good study guide to test your knowledge and give direction to your studying. Saying that, if you have a great chemistry teacher and feel comfortable with your knowledge, it isn't worth it. My teacher left my entire class feeling unprepared and there was a huge difference in the grades of those who bought this guide and those who didn't. This isn't a replacement for studying, but it can be a wonderful buy.

About the Author

Zaigham Mahmood is a researcher and author. He has an M.Sc. in Mathematics, M.Sc. in Computer Science, and Ph.D. in Modelling of Phase Equilibria. Dr Mahmood is a Senior Technology Consultant at Debesis Education UK, a researcher at the University of Derby UK, and Professor Extraordinaire at the North West University in South Africa. He is, currently, also a Foreign Professor at NUST Islamabad Pakistan.

Professor Mahmood has published over 100 articles in international journals and conference proceedings in addition to four books on cloud computing and two reference texts on e-government: E-Government Implementation and Practice in Developing Countries and Developing E-Government Projects: Frameworks and Methodologies. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of E-Government Studies and Best Practices and Series Editor-in-Chief of the IGI book series on Advances in Electronic Government, Digital Divide & Regional Development (AEGDDRD).

Professor Mahmood is an active researcher; he also serves as editorial board member of several journals, books and conferences; guest editor for journal special issues; organiser and chair of conference tracks and workshops; and keynote speaker at conferences. Good Omnibus of Profile, Pictures, and Recipes

Joel Robuchon is arguably the greatest living, working chef in the world. Patricia Wells is arguably one of the leading culinary journalists writing in English. And, Wells has already done a work on the cuisine of Joel Robuchon in the volume `Simply French' that won a James Beard award for best international cookbook in 1992. All this suggests this should be a great book. I also found things in this book that were not in `Simply French' which made this book more interesting to the reader; however, I did not find this a great, inspiring book for the cook. For the little concerns that lessened the overall impact of the volume, I give it only four stars rather than five.
I rate culinary works according to several different criteria, depending on the intended audience. The major accomplishments I value are lots of good, attainable, interesting recipes as in `James Beard's American Cookery'; masterful description of culinary technique as in Thomas Keller's `The French Laundry Cookbook', thoughtful reflections and revealing comments on culinary terroir, history, or culture as in Patience Gray's `Honey from a Weed'; accurate portrait of a regional cuisine as in David Downie's `Cooking the Roman Way', or exceptional presentation of a particular ingredient or branch of cooking as in Sherry Yard's masterful `The Secrets of Baking'. Memoirs such as Ruth Reichl's `Tender at the Bone' and straight journalism as in Tony Bourdain's `Kitchen Confidential' have their own special criteria, most of which is simply based on successfully telling an interesting story.
After all these reflections, I have to rate this volume somewhat below the very highest rank. The book addresses three subjects related to the career and art of Joel Robuchon.
The first subject is a brief chronicle of Robuchon's career, plus some comments on the careers of six of Robuchon's most prominent students. This section is a bit thin, but it does contain some interesting connections. It explains, for example, Robuchon's connection with and appearances on the Japanese produced show `Iron Chef' which appears regularly in translation on the Food Network. It turns out that Robuchon became enamored of Japanese cuisine early his career and he has a restaurant in Tokyo. He was also a very successful competitor in French culinary competitions early in his career. This section also reminds one of the practice of Thomas Keller. Wells describes Robuchon's kitchen as being quiet as a monastery, almost exactly the same description given by Michael Ruhlman of the kitchen at the French Laundry.
The second subject is a catalogue of Robuchon's favorite ingredients and their suppliers. Here is another parallel with Keller's French Laundry book, as Keller insisted that the book include profiles his of most important suppliers. Robuchon's hallmark ingredients are potatoes, caviar, scallops, cepes, sweetbreads, truffles, chestnuts, and almonds.
The third and largest section is a presentation of five or six recipes for each of the eight ingredients. Each recipe is the creation of Robuchon and one of his six disciples. Every recipe is spelled out in exquisite detail rarely seen in the methods of merely mortal chefs. Cooking times are given from exact milestones such as the time at which a pot of blanching water returns to a boil after adding vegetables. I confess some times and instructions are quite surprising to my totally amateur experience. I almost feel I need an explanation for why they poach asparagus for a full twenty minutes. I find asparagus totally limp and unappealing if it spends much more than five minutes in boiling water. Another major surprise is when a recipe puree's cooked scallops to be formed into quenelles on a mushroom puree. This brings back the comment of French cooking as being designed to suit people with bad teeth. In spite of the exquisitely detailed recipes, I did find a missing step here and there, where, for example, the recipe asks that cheese and potato slices be overlapped in a gratin without having given any instructions on how to slice the cheese.
A truly expert photograph of each finished dish accompanies every recipe by Herve Amiard, Robuchon's personal photographer. All are done with the food plated on a white plate, photographed from directly above the dish, with lighting always coming from the upper left (at about 2 o'clock). Dishes requiring special techniques as with grilled wild mushrooms with eggplant caviar are accompanied with detailed photographic montages and instructions to be certain that the reader can understand and follow the technique. This technique alone uses sixteen well-executed photographs.
This book includes two supplementary tables that enhance its value as a collection of recipes. The first is a tabulation of cooking times for each recipe, by ingredient. Don't get any impression that this book is a resource for quick cooking. The average prep and cook time is 90 minutes and some are as long as 10 hours. The second is a detailed table of contents. It is a little odd that these two tables duplicate a lot of information and their objectives could have been accomplished on two rather than on four folio-sized pages.
I am truly impressed by the modesty of the principle subject of the book and his collaborators. I just reviewed a book by a lesser French chef which might have been subtitled `An Advertisement for Myself'. In all, I found less new knowledge in this book than I found confirmation of statements by other great chefs. Robuchon, for example, confirms an observation made by Daniel Boulud that a cornerstone of culinary technique is repetition. You prepare a dish many, many times over until you know your ingredients and your techniques intimately.
Unlike Boulud's `Letters to a Young Chef', I don't think this book is required reading for foodies or professional chefs, but I think it is good stuff. It does several good things, but nothing great.

Wonderful, sumptuous cooking from a French master using loads of truffles, caviar and foie gras. First class all the way.

This is an extraordinary cookbook and, at least in the French edition, a book printed on paper so luxurious as to make the volume weigh twice as much as you might think it would. But, to the cooking: these are sumptuous and wonderful recipes and preparations by one of the great contemporary French chefs. The outlook on food and eating does assume that you have ready and easy access to both truffles and caviar. There are extensive photos and text about the Joel Robuchon restaurant, and also about the purveyors and sources of many of the food types. A lovely book in every way, but not a Julia Child hand holder for the beginner or for those unprepared to spend what it takes to use the ingredients called for in the recipes. First rate.

Old Robuchon

This is a great book to see some of Joel Robuchons work. The down side is it is a bit dated. If you are a serious culinary student interested in the works of Robuchon then I say you need this book. If you are looking for a Robuchon recipe book then you need a book called "The Complete Robuchon" I promise you will not be dissatisfied.

About the Author
As an archaeology student in the 1980s, Graeme Davis visited Viking sites in England and Denmark and worked on post-excavation analysis of materials from two Viking farms in the Orkney Islands. He is the author of the tabletop roleplaying sourcebook GURPS Vikings and several Viking-related magazine articles, among many other titles. He currently lives in northern Virginia with his wife Jamie, who is also a writer. The author lives in Front Royal, VA.

Fifty shades of Thor

No. This isn’t Thornography. It’s simply a reference to the multiple facets the god of Thunder has which the author presents with elegance.

Both the author and the illustrator are well known figures from the gaming world. Graeme Davis wrote one of the best GURPS supplements ever – GURPS Vikings; Miguel Coimbra is an extremely talented artist ever present in the gaming industry (both RPG’s and board games).

This team created a fine work which shows the multiple aspects of Thor, the hero, the god, the folklore character, the national hero and even the super-hero.

It analyses summarily with competence the sources for the Thor legends, including both the poetic and prose Edda, but also less known works such as Thorsdrapa.

The main legends are “chronologically” arranged so that the reader can experience Thor’s adventures in logical sequences and include his most famous achievements such as how Thor got Mjolnir, the illusions at Utgardaloki, Aegir’s feast (and all related adventures such as the fishing of Jormungand, the cauldron of Hymir and the Flyting of Loki against all the gods), the duel against the biggest of giants – Hrungnir, Thor as a “bride” of Thrym, the assassination attempt by Geirrod, the Flyting between Harbard and Thor and the final battle at Ragnarok. There is also a resume of other legends where Thor made an appearance.

The chapter Thor the god shows some rituals associated with Norse religion, sources for the temples and priesthood (although there wasn’t possibly “professional clergy”, there are clear references to priests who were local community leaders). The relations with Christianity and the progressive transformation of the god into a hero and folklore. The resurgence of Thor through the Romantic ideals of the 19th century and the nationalistic movements of the 20th century and finally to the well-loved comic book character (and also the silver screen hero).

The color plates by Miguel Coimbra include: Thor wrestling the old woman Elli in the hall of Utgardaloki; Thor battling Jormungand while fishing with Hyrm; the quite comical grumpy Thor disguising himself as bride to the giant Thrym; Harbard (probably Odin) and Thor's famous Flyting contest (in this plate the contestants should be far apart); The last fight between the Midgard serpent and Thor; In the hall of Aegir Thor threatens Loki after the latter offends all guests; and a magnificent double page plate where Thor battles three huge giants.

In this very good introduction to Thor you will also find a glossary, bibliography and internet resources where interested readers can analyze the sources in Old Norse and an English translation.

Nothing new to learn here

Good book focused on Thor and his beginnings anf mythology. Nice pictures and stories, but does not take account of his recent resurgence; mentions the latest movies, but stops at Marvel comic and movies. Nothing about neo-Aegardian interests and understandably light on historical religious practices. Nothing new to learn here, worthy of Wargames Research and Osprey fluff.

I really enjoyed this book primarily about Thor. It's written mainly as a informational, historical book about Thor with many cross overs with the other Norse gods. The author included numerous pictures, both modern and historical, to correspond with each story translated and told in straight forward English.

Overall it was an easy read, great for teens and adults to get a basic understanding of Norse mythology and Thor's place within it.

I'm hungry for more!!!

Devoured this ebook in minutes!!! So entertaining and thought provoking, 133 is written in such a way that you think on own experiences. Written as a series of brief vignettes that never gets tiresome, it really left me wanting more, so much in fact that I read it a few times!!! Mr. Ison has such respect for all women and and adores them in such a way that makes him a hero among men. Never disparaging, he looks back on his life and loves and appreciates all the love that has entered his life and shows extreme gratitude for it all...good, bad, and even the one that got away.....I'm looking forward to the next volume with great interest and enthusiasm.

LOVE the little prince but this edition is horrible!

I purchased this to practice my Spanish but if the Spanish is anywhere as full of mistakes as the English part of the book, it is no use for studying. The drawings are horrible. Yes, they are cute, but they don't get the story across.

For example: The narrator saw a documentary as a child and then drew a picture of an elephant inside a boa. Grownups he shows it to ask him why he drew a tophat. In the original version of the book (I have the original version) this image actually looks both like a snake bulged up from eating the elephant and a top hat. In this version, the snake has a cute comic face, stripes and all that and looks nothing like a top hat. So if you look at the photos, you don't understand the story. Sad to see this wonderful story destroyed like this...

This edition of The Little Prince in Spanish has no the drawings that are essential to understand and enjoy the text. It needs a warning alerting to possible buyers about that.
