About the Author
While in college at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas, Lonnie Berger received his initial Navigator ministry training. His first staff assignment was behind the Iron Curtain in communist Romania, where he lived and directed the Navigator work in three cities. There he met his missionary wife, June, also ministering in Romania with The Navigators. They have been married since 1984 and have two grown daughters, Stephanie and Karen.

During his years on staff with The Navigators, Berger has served as one of five U.S. Directors for the Community ministry, overseeing the development of 175 staff in 125 major cities. He is a conference speaker and continues mentoring other Christian leaders in discipleship, evangelism, ministry funding, and spiritual warfare.

Lots of busywork, formats, acronyms

This book is probably going to be enjoyable if you have never done any Bible study ever. But you won't find much helpful here. It feels like giving you lots of busywork is giving you tools but it isn't. My quiet times since I started using this method are dreadful. I don't understand the WAR method of praying. Memorizing verses seems like a good idea but I'm not good at it and it's just another thing I'm failing at. This is probably one of the least spiritual studies I have ever done. I don't feel like a warrior. I feel like a busybody homemaker holy roller wannabe.

I think most other men in my group have enjoyed this book so it must be me. But I wanted to write this so anyone else who finds this material dreadful or boring or useless maybe will feel better knowing that it's not just you.

This is a great way to bring men to a point of making a difference!

Our church has been using this material for 3 months and the changes in the men has been significant. They are learning how to study God's Word in their Quiet Times, how to memorize Scripture that can be used every day, and how to become part of band of brothers who uplift, pray for, and support each other during the week. If you are willing to commit 1 to 2 hours per week to your spiritual life then you will see great rewards!

Clear instruction and useful even for beginners

I don't actually paint in transparent, traditional watercolor but this book was available at my local library and I wondered if this book covered gouache or watercolor pencils. It doesn't, but I learned so much from the relatively short section on colors and color mixing. He was able to clearly explain why certain colors get certain results and how to use different colors to best effect. I'd be interested in reading that artist's book from which the excerpt came.

The book also had a section on materials, how to use the brushes to make different effects, and how to paint different types of paintings--landscapes, flowers, falling-down buildings with rust, up-close nature, snow effects, windows, rain, and so on. There was enough detail that I felt I could understand how to get the same result but each artist seemed to have one technique down really well and just repeated it again and again. Luckily, we had a variety of artists to learn from.

One of the best.

Jack has done it again. She has written a book that once you pick it up it is hard to put down. This book is confusing at times but that just makes it more enticing. It's dark and destructive. You get intensely engaged in the story. It's also heartbreaking.
The story starts out with a five-year old Kiyen. He is picked up at school, brought to a house and encounters seven other children. They are forced down and tattooed. Matt Chambers, tattoo artist didn't know he was going to be tattooing children when he took on the job. When he found out it was to late. Forced to tattoo a group of children at gunpoint was his worst nightmare. Especially when he finds out there is something in the ink that makes this night a real nightmare. Memories and traumatic scars will live with him for years and they will come back to haunt him when faced with Kiyen again. After that night there are only three children that survived.
Kiyen spent time with the other two survivors. Erin and Connor. They worked for M17 a non existent Government Department ran by a mysterious man named Julean (Jules). Kiyen, Erin and Connor are called First and feared the most because their ink was the strongest dose. The ink was diluted for the others. Others that are called Seconds. Firsts are killers, Seconds are sex objects.
Kiyen(yen) at eighteen runs from the M17. He is trapped in a burning building with no memories of the previous week. His memories are hidden for some reason and he doesn't know why. Connor has told Yen that he has taken something from him and he wants it back. Yen doesn't remember what it is. Connor is intent on torturing him through his mind until he remembers. Connor has locked Yen's ink. Making sexual release impossible and it's causing him to lose his mind. Kiyen was rescued by a firefighter named Harry and brought to his house. In his new house Yen runs into a neighbor, a boy a couple of years older. He is a Second. Falen(Fal) is his name. Fal was stolen and sold into the sex trade until his father rescued him. As much as Fal and Yen are drawn together they don't get along. Each hold beliefs about what the other has done or is capable of doing. There are strong emotions that is brought on by the ink.
Matt has come into contact with Yen but Yen doesn't remember him. Matt asks Fal to help unlock Yen. He does.
Sit back and enjoy the ride that takes place from here on out. Fasten your seatbelts because you're in for a rough ride. As the story wines down you learn what Kiyen took from Connor. You start to understand more. This book is a must read. When you do be prepared for a ride of your life. The ups and downs. If you've enjoyed the Don't... series and you like paranormal, you'll definitely want to read this book.

Broken Ink

I only read one review before going into this but I do wish I had read a few more only for the helpful information that there is a short glossary at the end of the e-book (and I agree it should be in the beginning). I have to admit to being a bit confused, mostly about the "ghosting" during the first 20% of the story, but finding the description in the glossary definitely clarified things for me.

That being said, Jack Pyke does not ease you into this story. The opening actually gave me Stephen King feels. This is a very detailed story, with lots of twists and mind fuckery (literally). Not always easy to read (as I have come to expect and love from the author), I was drawn in by Kiyen and his struggle. His lack of memory as to what led him to run from the only life he has knows just adds to the mystery. The Ink he has carried since he was a child is an entity in and of itself and now that even seems to be working against him. Fal is a ray of light and unexpected source of strength. While I wouldn't characterize this as a romance, it doesn't take long for Fal to get under Kiyen's skin. Now Kiyen finds himself not only trying to protect himself from his MI7 boss and family, but doing what he must to keep Fal out of harm's way.

Broken Ink is a paranormal, psychological thriller, with plenty of action and a HFN ending. While I still had some minor questions in the end, I really enjoyed the this departure from Jack Pyke's usual contemporary writing. If you've enjoyed the Don't... books, and like paranormal/sci fi, you'll definitely want to check this one out.

Jack Pyke is an auto buy for me. Her writing is always dark and pushes boundaries that I suspect make a lot of people uncomfortable. I love her well developed characters, I become invested in them and I have yet to pick up one of her books that I can put down easily. If you have read the Don’t… series you will know how Jack’s stories go, there is a lot of pain, sometimes trauma, definitely abuse, quite often situations that will prevent you from sleeping soundly and then finally a chance at happiness – this book is the same!

This book starts with a kick as 5 year old Kiyen is taken from school, sold by his father, and marked with an ink that ‘lives’. It is child abuse at its worst as the ink manipulates their minds and leaves them open to any and all suggestion. Kiyen is not the only child involved that day. Eight young boys and girls are in that small bedroom, surrounded by greedy and uncaring men who have no compunction to slapping these kids around to make them compliant. There is overwhelming fear in that room and by the end of the night only three children will be alive.

For Matt Chambers, a tattoo artist, this is his worst nightmare as he is forced to tattoo a group of children at gun point. The memories and traumatic scars will live with him for years and come back to haunt him in the worst way. His link to Kiyen is special as he feels responsible for him being there even though he was clueless as to what he had gotten himself involved in and that feeling hasn’t gone away when they run in to each other again over a decade later.

Kiyen spends the next decade or so with the two other children who survived, Erin and Connor, working for M17 a nonexistent Government Department, under the leadership of a mysterious man called Jules. They are known as the ‘firsts’ and are feared by many for their skills at entering people’s minds, stripping out information, and leaving them dead. Not many people are known to have survived a visit from a first and those that do are not left sane enough to be believable.

Roll forward and Kiyen is eighteen trapped in a burning building and with no memories of the previous week. He has left the safety of M17 and is running from whatever his memories are hiding. He has taken something, has no idea what, and Connor is intent on torturing him through his mind until he remembers. Kiyen, usually dominant in any sexual act, finds his will bending to Connor but even worse his ink has been locked and it is causing him to lose his mind. A lucky rescue from a fire-fighter finds Kiyen with somewhere to live but Connor is lurking around every corner.

At his new home Kiyen runs into a neighbour, a boy a couple of years older, who has his own traumatic story to tell with regards to the ink. Where the firsts are killers the seconds are sex objects. The ink has them becoming compliant to kink and sexual practices with the dregs of society. Fal was stolen and sold into the sex trade. He was also one of the luckier ones and had a father who rescued him. Never spending too long in one place for fear of recapture they live life in seclusion and the very last thing Fal needs is a locked and confused Kiyen landing on his doorstep. Land though he does and Fal feels compelled to help him.

As much as Fal and Kiyen are drawn together they also rub each other the wrong way. They each hold beliefs about what the other has done or is capable of doing and there are strong emotions, aided by the ink, that get in the way. They are both deeply damaged by their pasts but the strength their individual traumas have left them with makes them both fighters.

This is a complex story, not always easy to follow, and it almost takes on a life of its own – a bit like the ink.
Although not a love story, it is Jack Pyke after all, there is an element of love and that will be the factor that helps them survive. They end up in a small band of people, a pack of rebels almost like a family, who help each other escape and look forward to surviving the future. When you discover the missing ‘information’ that Connor is so desperate to find it all makes sense!

Best PM Book I own.....

While not in offical PM role, I often manage small scale projects for my immediate team at work (a team of about 50). This book came into my life just after I was strongly encouraged to take on a very large scale project (this time affecting my larger organization of 400).
Understanding Mr Dorset's Meta Rules for Project Management has been a tremendous help to apply and use while I work on managing this larger scale project. Being able to stop 'juggling' and start thinking like Bobby Fisher instead has changed the way I approach all my project now (and I'm buying extra copies of his book to share with folks).
Here's to stopping the juggling.

One of the best practical book on Project Management.

If you are looking to do a great job as a PM and still have a life, get this book. It is written by a very practical project manager for individuals who would like to be more effective and practical in their role as PM. How do I know this? I worked with him for several years on long term international projects with large multinational team. This book accurately reflects what he preached and practiced on the projects and hence my recommendation. I did not decide to write this recommendation as a favor to the author but as a favor to individuals, who can use a really practical guide to managing project and have a life. This author with his approach made it possible for all the team members to have a real work-life balance even on the road. Under him, our team excelled in every area imaginable on a project. I am glad that he decided to put his thoughts into writing so others can benefit from his approach. This would also be a great book for someone starting out as a Project Manager, as well.
