About the Author
Diane Lucas currently works as an ethnocologist with her husband. They travel around northern Australia doing work related to this as well as botanical and fire ecology work. Diane was a school teacher on an Aboriginal outstation in Kakadu during 1983 and 84. From 1991 to 96 she worked on a research project documenting traditional resources on the South Alligator River floodplain and surrounds. She now lives only two hours from Kakadu and maintains a strong relationship with the people and country there.Illustrator bio:Ken Searle is a painter and illustrator who is represented in major galleries in Australia and internationally. Albert provides an unprecedentedly clear, lively, and systematic new account--in the context of a Newtonian-Mechanical picture of the world--of the ultimate origins of the statistical regularities we see around us, of the temporal irreversibility of the Second Law of Thermodynamics, of the asymmetries in our epistemic access to the past and the future, and of our conviction that by acting now we can affect the future but not the past. Then, in the final section of the book, he generalizes the Newtonian picture to the quantum-mechanical case and (most interestingly) suggests a very deep potential connection between the problem of the direction of time and the quantum-mechanical measurement problem.

The book aims to be both an original contribution to the present scientific and philosophical understanding of these matters at the most advanced level, and something in the nature of an elementary textbook on the subject accessible to interested high-school students.

This book is one of the best on the subject.

I couldn't stand to see this book with such poor user reviews. One can see the academic reviews are stellar. This is the best book on time that I have ever read. It is not pop-science, it is an academic work on the foundations of physics and time. As such, it is not an easy book to read, despite the fact that it is well-written and anyone should be able to follow it if their mind has not atrophied. It is not easy because it presents in almost full glory all the problems most physicists ignore with respect to questions concerning the role of time in modern physics. I gave this book four stars because I thought it was missing (2) things. One - epistemic motivation for the past hypothesis, Two - Convincing arguments that QCD time-reversal symmetry breaking doesn't really matter for the questions discussed. Anyone who thinks this is a poorly written book should survey the other literature on the topic for comparison. Dr. Albert has tackled a difficult subject with a degree of intellectual integrity and honesty uncommon in physics so don't complain if you have to think because that is the purpose of the book. I have read this book repeatedly and learn something new almost everytime I open the book. I thouroughly disagree with his attempted resolution of time-reversal invariance and entropy increase through the past hypothesis, in particular since the epistemic motivation for the past hypothesis admits necessarily of no non-circular verification. I still maintain he has done an excellent job in writing this book and the poor user reviews should not prevent anyone from reading it. Expect to read it slowly at least twice and to have to think and you will know more about time than most physics PhD's.

Fascinating Subject But Horribly Unintelligible Writing

Formally trained in academia as a physicist, David Albert made the switch over to philosophy to address foundational issues in physics, most notably those dealing with time and an outstanding problem in quantum mechanics known as the measurement problem. Although the endeavors of Albert are noble and worthwhile, I am afraid that he is lacking in competency as a writer to communicate his ideas in any sensible, intelligible fashion. As a former student of his, I can personally attest to how frustrating his writing and teaching style, kindly referred to by some as "unique," can be. Needlessly obtuse, ever obscure, Albert writes in such a manner that his prose can truly serve as a wonderful negative example of how not to write. Virtually every conceivable error in basic grammar and syntax is committed. Endlessly long sentences, riddled with comma splices and run on sentences, are grossly accompanied by a monstrous convolution of nestled subordinate clauses, which topple over one another and collapse any unifying logic.
Adding to this confusion, Albert repeatedly makes distracting use of parentheses in numerous attempts to develop main ideas instead of correctly using parentheses to make brief, nonessential comments. This semantic nightmare, however, does not end here, as Albert, in page after page, then incorporates numerous, ridiculously long footnotes, which like his "parenthetical" comments are also used to develop main ideas and are so needlessly complicated as to loose any cohesive significance. The net effect of all of this is to drown whatever semblance of order or meaning Albert is attempting to convey under a cacophony of jangled ideas, which chaotically crash into one another instead of logically and succinctly flowing orderly and soundly from one notion to the other. The reader senses there is some overarching unifying thread, in which all the disparate ideas Albert greatly belabors in developing will come together. This intimation, then, pushes the reader on with a very taxed patience for that moment of a great enlightenment. The anticipation of that arrival, however, proves anticlimactic, as chapter after chapter ends as it begins: in a dissolution of fragmentary, Byzantine ideas and lost meanings. Indeed, there has not been such a level of impenetrable perplexity in literature since T. S. Eliot's The Waste Land.
The most intelligible portion of this book, ironically, is to be found-not in the book itself per se-but in the description of the book on the inside of the jacket cover. Essentially, this book serves to bring an awareness to what is a fascinating problem in physics: the attempt to reconcile the temporal invariance of physical laws with our perennial everyday sense of a unidirectional nature of time. In Newtonian dynamics, for example, the governing equations of motion equally apply to both the past and the future. There is nothing in Newton's equations (or indeed in other equations that describe other physical phenomena such as electromagnetism or quantum mechanics) that specifies a direction of time. The past, in otherworlds, is just as likely to be a so-called "arrow of time" as the future is. Yet we know that there is one direction to time. In particular, the Second Law of Thermodynamics shows that we live in a universe in which entropy is ever increasing. We age and never grow younger; dropped eggs, which then crack, never spontaneous reassemble; smoke fills a room and never flows toward a point; we recall the past and not the future; and we can affect the future but not the past. Despite these common, everyday understandings of the way the universe operates, physical law makes no such distinctions of the past and future. We are as likely to become younger as we are to age; broken eggs can suddenly reassemble; smoke can converge toward a point; we should be able to recall the future as well as the past; and we can affect the past as well as the future. This is the subject that Albert is attempting to present to his readers.
Moreover, Albert offers a solution to the above problem: the so-called Past-Hypothesis, which is at the heart of this book. The Past-Hypothesis posits that the universe began in a Big Bang, low-entropy state, in which the random nature of particle motion (later argued by Albert to be possibly quantum mechanical in origin) then guarantees that the universe will evolve toward ever growing entropy, thus specifying an "arrow" of time and accounting for the Second Law of Thermodynamics. Albert argues that the Past-Hypothesis is a basic facet of physical law, irreducible to nothing else or anything more basic. This view, however, is by no means universally accepted. There are many competing theories to this problem of time, including a very interesting one by Julian Barbour, who argues in The End of Time for a fascinating possibility that there is an underlying time-less structure to the universe.
Other than stating the problem well on the book jacket (which you can view and read here on Amazon.com), I am afraid that Time and Chance really has no other merit, which would make it a book worth purchasing. I truly hope that if Dr. Albert is reading this he will understand just how difficult it is to comprehend his book, in which the difficulty lies not in the subject matter but in his writing. There were many very bright and capable people in his class who often times simply had no idea (myself included) what it was he was trying to convey. The book is in dire need of heavy revision, and I hope that this is undertaken in the future. As it stands, the book is simply too poorly written to be worth the read other than if you are one of the unfortunate students enrolled in his Direction of Time course, in which case your grade depends on you desperately trying to elucidate and understand this book.

Definitely not for the layperson

I was interested in this book because of its glowing review in Science magazine. While this may be an excellent book, I certainly couldn't tell after the first 45 pages. Major portions of the text consists of illegible footnotes. In spite of its folksy style, the author is obscure and impenetrable. It makes me wonder why, if he really has something to say, he can't explain it in a sensible fashion. While there might be people who get something from this book, a casual reader should expect some very tough going.

Recent update: I am sad to inform you all of the passing of Dr. Frye. His life was long; honorable and fruitful but his loss will be felt and he will be missed.

Professor Frye is one of the most knowledgeable modern Western scholars on Iran. This book is a very fine example of his work. It chronicles his personal journey of a lifetime and his actual journey through lands that once made Iran Shahr. Greater Iran means lands where spans a common culture; history and language. These include Iran; Afghanistan; parts of Pakistan; Iraq; and a number of the former Soviet Republics.

Over the centuries people have gone through so much change that many ancient memories have been forgotten. It has been fortunate for West and people of Greater Iran that a man of Professor Frye's caliber did this work. It recovers and makes some of the history available for anyone who can read English.

With all the misinformation and confusion it is very good to have such work available in a form that anyone may benefit from.

more philosophic than how to advice

I found this book to be more "lofty and philosophical" than practical hands on advice, such as, "Sometimes if you join a chartiy you can meet people with common interests. The more you socialize with these people the more comfortable you will be in those settings" as opposed to other books which say, "go to charity events. If you can't afford the ticket go to the pre or post party or volunteer for the charity to get on the guest list." Also, the constant reference to prince and princess got a little annoying as did the typos. This book is FILLED with typing and grammatical errors. It actually makes me have little respect for the publisher who let this go to print. That said, there are some gems of wisdom on the pages of this book and if you suffer from a lack of self confidence or feel deep down you don't deserve to be treated and spoiled by someone else's money, this is the book for you. I regard this book more as a self help book to gain confidence than a meet a rich man book.

A delightful fun read and a charming, sensible, information filled, point by point approach to getting the man of your dreams. Ms. Spangler is so right on with her advice. She shares the lessons she has learned and observed through her own and girlfriends experiences while dating, in a clever tell all. She expounds things my mother told me that I didn't always listen to and should have. He makes the case that participatory methodologies, evolved through creative and eclectic pluralism, can be a transformative wave for the future as drivers of personal, professional and institutional change. A monumental work defining the non-directive technique.

Rogers, the father of humanistic psychology, has created a technique for assisting others to understand and deal with their problems. The non-directive approach relies upon empathy, reflection and clarification to enable the client (patient) to exercise his responsibility for himself. Implicit in the method is the belief that only the client is able to choose a solution for his problems and, with the counselor's (therapist's) help, he will come to a point where he understands the exact nature of his problems enabling him to select solutions consistent with his own values.
Non-directive techniques lend themselves to all interpersonal situations where adjustment of behavior to the demands of the environment will lead to greater satisfaction. It can be of particular value in business when counseling employees who are not performing to standard, experiencing difficulties with co-workers, expressing dissatisfaction with their work, etc.
The book addresses also application of the approach in play therapy, group centered psychotherapy, group-centered leadership and administration, student-centered teaching, and the training of counselors and therapists. Finally, Rogersdevotes a section to discussion of the implications for psychological theory.

One to bear in mind is that every publication has their own production to get by each viewers. Many years ago my friends and I would sit around and play what we called "Jerry Springer: the Home Game". The object of the game was to see how many upcoming shows we qualified for, with the story to support our claim, and whoever had the most at the end of the program won. I was the reigning champion. This book started off as just a lighthearted collection of anecdotes, stories shared with friends over the years to both the horror and delight of my audience. But as I began to write I realized that the humor of my life comes not from the light moments, but the dark, and without those moments being included much of the humor would be lost without that context. This book is a bit darker than I initially intended, but I hope that while reading this I can make you smile, even on occasion laugh out loud at the ridiculousness of the situations I have found myself in over the years, and that you, like me, can find the humor in all the dark places. I do not believe I have any wisdom to share in this telling, nor is it even an inspirational tale of achievement by overcoming adversity, it is simply my life that I have survived. For better or for worse, this is the mostly true, fairly accurate, and almost completely factual account of my life. Some liberties have been taken to protect the somewhat innocent and a few small embellishments were made for the sake of a good story.

About the Author
Lisa Orban was born in Galesburg, IL in 1969. She was moved by her parents (without even asking!) to Quincy as a small child. Bouncing from parent to parent, and house to house until at 16 she was given a broader tour of the state courtesy of foster care. At 18, she voluntarily left for Phoenix with a high school friend where she lived for three years. After returning to Quincy, she went to college and earned an Associates of Arts in Psychology, with a minor in Art. Over the years she has held many jobs, but never quite found the right one. She has written poetry and short stories on a variety of subjects from raising children to finance for online publication. Finally in 2013, after much urging from her friends for years, she sat down one day and started writing about her life.She is the mother of five children, all grown and gone, except her youngest. Which she is sure is trying to drive her mad (as all teenagers do) and has plans to write another book in the future about their childhood, much to their anticipated dismay.
She currently lives in her hometown, in the house she loves, and at the center of the chaos she enjoys so much. Often surrounded by her children, her loves, friends and the strays (both two legged and four) she takes in. She continues to seek out new adventures, misadventures and new mistakes to fill the pages of her next book, laughing as she goes.

A Must-Read. Should be Mandatory for All Participants in Foster Care & Faculties in the Educational System. Laughs & Tears.

When the author contacted me seeking a review, I agreed to read this as a free borrow through my Kindle Unlimited account. Within 50 or so pages, though, I was so overtaken by the trials and travesties within this story that I bought it for my Kindle library. It is a hard book to put down and forget about.

Although I am giving this first edition five stars due to its immense potential value to society, as should be apparent in the paragraphs below, there is a visible need for professional editing that I hope the author will understand and employ.

Most of the editing errors concern commas or, what I call, autocorrect stumbles. Before I discuss that, I often commit these types of mistakes myself. Often I commit glaring spelling errors, myself, because I have vision problems while writing on my iPhone, and because I’m afraid to turn off the autocorrect. Further, unlike the errors I can’t miss seeing that are committed by others, no matter how hard I try, I am unable to successfully proof my own typing. If and when I write a Kindle book I hope I have the sense to search for and employ a professional editor.

That brings us to our discussion of this otherwise terrific book It’ll Feel when it Quits Hurting. The author commonly uses the possessive sense, or the apostrophe, in places where it is not proper, or does not use it when it is needed, but far less frequent is this mistake. And, on a very few occasions, such as location 2246, (the last line just before the chapter heading My Kingdom For a Story, the word shallow is used instead of swallow – this is the sort of typo I refer to, correctly or not, as ‘an autocorrect’ error.

But please don’t let such mistakes and oversights spoil your opportunity to gain an insight that is of utmost value in our society. The stories of this writer have likely been on for eons, but, as our society slips and slides through the current phase, these tragedies are gaining frequency. At least, that is my belief. At any rate, more of us should get her perspective into adolescence during foster care.

Yes, I know it is tough being a parent, and still tougher being a foster parent. After all, manuals and procedures and studies and installation/operating instructions are prevalent for most anything in our society, except as regards raising a child or in maturing into middle age or into the status of becoming a senior citizen.

Also, the faculties in our school districts should be required to read this book. There is a bit in this memoir that, while it is hilarious in the reading, it speaks volumes in terms of the prejudice and inherent profiling (racial and otherwise) that pervades our educations system.
But, even those instances are not adequate summaries as to why I rate this a must-read, five star triumph.

The author’s life is much that of a character in a Stephen King masterpiece. She is almost Carrie in the flesh. Yet, despite failed parenting and failures by most of those caring for her in her years as a foster child, and despite the snafus within her school years, Lisa Orban, the author, grew up and bettered herself by attending college and earning an Associate of Arts Degree in psychology.

I suppose one reason I can so readily identify with her growing up is, my first wife (of 26 years) had also spent time in foster care in Ohio. She also had a horrid experience in her home, with her step father, after she was recovered from her nightmare in that previous foster care. Her siblings also experienced hardship and tragedy under the same roof.

But, unlike my first wife, Orban was born during a later period, a society only beginning to trudge through the result of the sexual revolution and racial/sexual/sexual preference issues, and, itself, a victim of the Supreme Court decisions regarding school prayer and abortion. I know my fellow liberal democrats will not look kindly on that statement, but, I believe in candor and openness. Our society has been reaping what earlier Supreme Court decisions sowed.

Anyway, I know this is a review of Orban’s works, not a platform upon which I should pontificate. My opinion, as stated above, though, has pertinence to the appreciation of a rollicking good roller coaster ride through life by someone who has dared to open herself up to ridicule in order that we can enjoy the trip with her, or share the joys, heartbreaks and fears with her.

I pray, though, that a sufficient number of readers gain an insight into her topsy-turvy life and rejection and love so that we can make a better system for the care of children, especially in foster homes, and in schools, for the children she and her children bring into our world.

Oh, her story of her grandfather is terrific, reminding me of one of my mother’s boyfriends when she was quite young. He was a twiddler and my grandmother asked him if he could do something besides twiddle like that. His reply? He reversed the twiddling.

The overarching message I took from her narrative of grandfather was that it instilled in her a certain innocence and love that, deep down, permitted her to survive the grief that was to come.

Again, this is a must-read story that should be compulsory to all foster-dare homes and the entire educational system. There is a wealth of education between the covers of It’ll Feel Better When It Quits Hurting.

A rare gem

I laughed, I cried and most of all, I FELT. Sorrow, joy and amusement in equal measure. I also felt the echo in my own life of some of Lisa's stories, especially her teenage and young adulthood escapades. I think every reader will feel the same connection to some parts of Lisa's life. Reading like a series of short stories with a lifetime arc, this is a book that was hard to put down and one I highly recommend.

Lisa's book suffers from many grammatical errors, as do most self-published books, but unlike the fictional pieces I've read, the errors and mistakes didn't get in the way of the narrative. They're easily forgiven because of the knowledge that this is, above all, an honest book that doesn't spare the author or the reader. This is a book like none other I've read.

Foster Care: What is it, really?

IF you don't give the topic of foster care much of your time, you may want to live the experiences of Lisa Orban, who will certainly give you much more than an executive overview. I was raised in a few orphanages in the 40s and 50s so I had empathy with this unique author's look back at her past. Her book is quite informative and may very well become the "bible" on the foster care industry. Parents especially will benefit from reading It'll Feel Better when it Quits Hurting. Be preparied for both shock and amazement as it also deal with the troubling reality of domestic abuse. But like icing on the cake it also provides you with humor to soften the blow. Any domestic violence organisation would surely benefit from the messages in Lisa's well-written book. If you have never met a domestic violence survivor, you must meet this author. You will be both blessed and enlightened.
