Master in craft, Native to the core

A Native-born speaker, with a critical ear for nuances, picking up the sublime, he avoids the overdone caricatures that others do--as they invariably insult other native-born speakers, like myself & embarrass themselves! I bought the book to tone down my dialect, when need be, (voice overs) to be more aware of my speech, never to purge/mock myself of my identity. A great book--in concert with his YouTube videos you'll see he is a Master.

There is a passage early in Augusten Burroughs's harrowing and highly entertaining memoir, Running with Scissors, that speaks volumes about the author. While going to the garbage dump with his father, young Augusten spots a chipped, glass-top coffee table that he longs to bring home. "I knew I could hide the chip by fanning a display of magazines on the surface, like in a doctor's office," he writes, "And it certainly wouldn't be dirty after I polished it with Windex for three hours." There were certainly numerous chips in the childhood Burroughs describes: an alcoholic father, an unstable mother who gives him up for adoption to her therapist, and an adolescence spent as part of the therapist's eccentric extended family, gobbling prescription meds and fooling around with both an old electroshock machine and a pedophile who lives in a shed out back. But just as he dreamed of doing with that old table, Burroughs employs a vigorous program of decoration and fervent polishing to a life that many would have simply thrown in a landfill. Despite her abandonment, he never gives up on his increasingly unbalanced mother. And rather than despair about his lot, he glamorizes it: planning a "beauty empire" and performing an a capella version of "You Light Up My Life" at a local mental ward. Burroughs's perspective achieves a crucial balance for a memoir: emotional but not self-involved, observant but not clinical, funny but not deliberately comic. "Bookman gave me attention. We would go for long walks and talk about all sorts of things. Like how awful the nuns were in his Catholic school when he was a kid and how you have to roll your lips over your teeth when you give a blowjob," writes Burroughs (Sellevision) about his affair, at age 13, with the 33-year-old son of his mother's psychiatrist. That his mother sent him to live with her shrink (who felt that the affair was good therapy for Burroughs) shows that this is not just another 1980s coming-of-age story. The son of a poet with a "wild mental imbalance" and a professor with a "pitch-black dark side," Burroughs is sent to live with Dr. Finch when his parents separate and his mother comes out as a lesbian. While life in the Finch household is often overwhelming (the doctor talks about masturbating to photos of Golda Meir while his wife rages about his adulterous behavior), Burroughs learns "your life [is] your own and no adult should be allowed to shape it for you." There are wonderful moments of paradoxical humor Burroughs, who accepts his homosexuality as a teen, rejects the squeaky-clean pop icon Anita Bryant because she was "tacky and classless" as well as some horrifying moments, as when one of Finch's daughters has a semi-breakdown and thinks that her cat has come back from the dead. Beautifully written with a finely tuned sense of style and wit the occasional clich‚ ("Life would be fabric-softener, tuna-salad-on-white, PTA-meeting normal") stands out anomalously this memoir of a nightmarish youth is both compulsively entertaining and tremendously provocative.

This memoir by Burroughs is certainly unique; among other adventures, he recounts how his mother's psychiatrist took her to a motel for therapy, while at home the kids chopped a hole in the roof to make the kitchen brighter. Not all craziness, though, this account reveals the feelings of sadness and dislocation this unusual upbringing brought upon Burroughs and his friends. His early family life was characterized by his parents' break-and-destroy fights, and after his parents separated, his mother practically abandoned Burroughs in hopes of achieving fame as a poet. At 12, he went to live with the family (and a few patients) of his mother's psychiatrist. At the doctor's home, children did as they wished: they skipped school, ate whatever they wanted, engaged in whatever sexual adventures came along, and trashed the house and everything in it, while the mother watched TV and occasionally dusted. Burroughs has written an entertaining yet horrifying account that isn't for the squeamish: the scatological content and explicit homosexual episodes may limit its appeal. Another rehash of a dysfunctional family

I bought Running With Scissors after reading his elder brother's account of his discovery that he was a victim of Asberger's Syndrome. (John Elder Robison: Look Me in the Eye.) I found Burrough's book to be another rehash of a dysfunctional family. Wile interesting, there was really nothing new that has not been alluded to in other "tell-all" narratives about dysfunctional families. Perhaps the most interesting part of the book was ta the fictional names of characters in Running With Scissors are identified with their real names (I assume) in Look Me in the Eye.

Disturbing

I can't recommend this book due to some of the graphically descriptive sex passages. They are not meant to titillate, merely to illustrate the chaos of the author's upbringing, if it can be called that. They are included in the same matter-of-fact narrative style as all the other bizarre and off-kilter events. The reader is left with a sense of wonder that the author made it to adulthood at all. The takeaway here, for me, is gratitude for my comparatively normal upbringing, and the reminder to suspend judgment of another person.

I Could Not Put This Down!

"Running with Scissors: A Memoir", is Augusten Burroughs first published memoir. A friend recommended this book to me. I never heard of the author, until this book. I was not able to put it down. It is very well written. He details very personal events that happened to him when he was young. Burroughs gives a detailed account of his sexual relationship with an adult male, when he was just a minor. He is very open about his homosexuality, which is a very bold and honest account. "Running with Scissors" is very graphic in its sexual content and is for adult readers only. We learn about the author's life, he leaves nothing out. I highly recommend this book to you.

Note: After reading this, I was hooked on learning about the author's life. So, I immediately purchased all his other memoirs and read them in order. They were all excellent and well written. I admire him for his boldness and honesty.

This is a good book to get your office up and running quickly in QuickBooks. I was very disappointed, however, by the failure of the book to discuss in any depth the use of QuickBooks for Trust Accounting. The book merely states (page 142) that “The trust accounting in QuickBooks is beyond the scope of this book . . . “ This says it all - I only wish I had known this before purchasing the book!

If one of your purposes is to learn the proper use of QuickBooks for trust accounts, save your money and buy a more comprehensive book.

A valuable tool when creating Quickbooks 2014 Premium for Lawyers.
The book has clear explanations and examples of the screens you will see. This book guides you in the initial set up process for Quickbooks for Lawyers.
The book guides you through the process of entering time, expenses, creating clients, account receivables. It describes the different reports that are available in Quickbooks and how to use them. This book is a concise guide to creating and using the Quickbooks for Lawyers software.
The author, Lynette Benton, also has a website AttorneysTechnology.com which has tips on use, report forms, links to other helpful sites. She also offers online interactive consulting advice. With your permission she can remotely log in to your Quickbooks account to review it and give you advice on modifying and setting up your software. This service is available for a reasonable fee.

Get a Better Understanding of Your Law Firm's (or Company's) Financials

Every lawyer (or even non-lawyer) whose firm uses QuickBooks will benefit from reading “QuickBooks in One Hour for Lawyers” by Lynette Benton. I was the volunteer project manager of this book (for the ABA LPD Publications Board) and had no previous training in QuickBooks and no aptitude for accounting. But after reading this book, I now know how to use QuickBooks and can generate reports that are useful to understanding my company’s financials (e.g., from tracking how much each lawyer has billed and how much revenue we earned from each client, to creating Profit and Loss reports). QuickBooks can be used to record time, keep track of your income and expenditures, track escrow or trust account payments received from clients and expenses paid on their behalf, create invoices and monthly statements for clients, handle payroll, print checks, and much more. I especially liked that the book was written in plain-English and illustrated with color screen shots. Lynette Benton has been a QuickBooks certified ProAdvisor since QuickBooks started the program in 1999. Lynette specializes in teaching and training Attorneys and Law Firms to use QuickBooks.

[The author has] managed to put together a coherent story starting with simple physical effects, such as surface tension and bubble rafts, to organic systems like the tobacco mosaic virus and the ribosome to the Cheerios effect (for those of us who like breakfast cereal!). This is then elegantly connected to George Whiteside's engineered Cheerios effect, to magnetic self assembly and finally ending with very recent work on DNA self assembly-including even the latest work out of Winfree's lab! It is really terrific. I had not considered how powerful a course about self assembly would be before I saw how [the author] put everything together in [this] book.

It covers a number of recent revolutionary breakthroughs in self assembly, demonstrating the self assembly of complex and richly patterned nanostructures. The text would be essential reading to anyone in these fields, as well as to anyone with a curiosity about the basic processes that are used by nature to assemble the most complex things we know about in the universe-ourselves.

Remarkable, comprehensive book

I could not express a higher appreciation for this book. It puts together several aspects and kinds of self-assembly (SA) and contextualizes them in a precise framework. From the abstract point of view, the author breaks up self-assembling systems into structured particles, binding forces, environment, and driving forces, and formally defines the forward, backward and yield problems of self-assembly.
The distinction between static and dynamic SA is clear and well explained. The book essentially covers ALL (!) the significant experimental and theoretical work that has been done in the field ever since the idea of SA was born. There are tons of references and additional materials to read, end of chapter summaries and problems. The bibliography of the major players in the field is outlined here and there in the book, and it is quite essential to really understand how different ideas were generated and where specific work currently done in the field fits. I still can't understand how a mathematician (like the author) managed to put together all this information and cross all these boundaries between different subfields, but I can only say that this book is a remarkable, outstanding, comprehensive, and authoritative review of SA, with a lot of insight and directions for the future, and a complete set of reference for further study.
As a researcher involved in the field, it gave me tons of new ideas for problems to investigate in SA. If self-assembly interests you, buy this book!

It is a very nice book, introduces in a very clear manner the basics principle of self-assembly with also nice applied cases that can help to understand the field to someone whi is discovering it.

I strongly recommend it to someone who is starting with self-assembly or to a more advanced reader for passing through the references (very well described) and some theoretical calculation.

Good variety of topics, coverage of each somewhat limited

I did enjoy reading this book, and it was very helpful as an introduction to self-assembly. As the previous reviewer stated, it covers a large number of topics related to self-assembly. However, there is limited coverage of the Physics involved, mostly focusing on things from a more conceptual level (good, but I was hoping for more).

I purchased this program when it first came out after hearing Garrett Gunderson speak at a conference. I had a goal of becoming free of debt and create sustainable cash flow. I worked the program as it is laid out and have accomplished my goal within just a couple of years. I have given this program to all of my adult children because if I had know at their ages what I have learned from Garrett Gunderson, my financial life would have been so much easier. I lost 60% of my investments during the recession in the 80's. With Garrett's program, I invested differently and have not lost anything during this current financial crisis. I have actually gained 8-10% annually on my current investments.

Why weren't ALL my Nurse Practitioner textbooks this great!

When I got my latest job as an NP with hospice, I needed review of this area. I ordered this because I like case studies anyway. This book is GREAT....MacDonald presents the objectives, then takes you through them in cases which is the best way for me to learn because I can then have a mental picture of a person who has the problem being addressed.

I really am enjoying this book, not finished with it yet.

Although this stunning work is structured in chapters ranging from canap?s to desserts, to consider it merely a "cookbook" would be to trivialize its content and impact. The French Laundry (in Yountville, CA) is one of the most important restaurants in the United States, and owner Keller is an articulate chef with culinary principles. His philosophy: the palate gets weary, so small and often exotic courses should be designed to maximize the experience of each flavor and texture. He defends tradition, e.g., chickens must be trussed, and yet each recipe is startlingly original. Although this is a complex book for the average busy person--Keller advises: "Take your time. Take a long time"--there are also fairly simple dishes. Epitomizing a love of ingredients (there is a resource guide to esoterica) and an almost magical approach to food, this is required for any real "cookbook" collection.

Excellent cook book, but not for the average home cook

This is an excellent cook book with some delicious recipes, and great insight into the mind of one of the greatest chefs in the world. It talks about all the different aspects of professional cooking, from preparation to taste, to plating and appearance, to portion size and more. Every recipe is directly from Thomas Keller's restaurant The French Laundry (owner of 3 Michelin stars), which the book got it's name from. The book is in the collection of just about every successful chef, and for that it receives 4 stars. However, it is not for the average home cook. This book is aimed directly at professional chefs. It says that all the recipes in it were tested in home kitchens, but I wouldn't recommend this book if you don't have at least a semi-extensive culinary knowledge. A lot of the ingredients aren't just at any grocery store, and some are very expensive. A lot of the procedures require skills that take practice to acquire. If you're not sure about it I suggest going to a book store and checking it out first, or if you're a Kindle member maybe they have a sample.

Pretty. Lovely photography

Pretty. Lovely photography. Good reading, Zen-like. just the thing for a Sunday afternoon browse or to place on a coffee table for guests. *Not* terribly useful. If you want to read the story about how chef Keller got his ideas and motivation for dishes, then by all means buy this book. There are more 'utilitarian' french cookbooks with excellent dishes available, such as Greenspans etc., that oh, for example say, have an index.

Beautiful cookbook

This is a beautiful cookbook. I had the chance to eat at the French Laundry about 10 or 12 years ago and it was a wonderful experience (I don't think I could afford it now, so glad I went when I did). Absolutely delicious and beautiful dishes and so I got this book with a bit of nostalgia. The pictures are lovely and inspirational. I admit that I have not tried any of the recipes, but having looked through them I am not sure I will. The recipes seem overly complicated and many seem incomplete, such as missing steps or lacking detail on how to achieve the desired results. When I have more time, I will try out a recipe or two, but this will not be a "go-to" book for me because of how overly complicated the dishes are and how many key details seem to be lacking.
