Alternative housing ideas

I have been casting about for alternative housing ideas for a few years now and have read several books concerning building your own. This book covers, not in great depth, several related building techniques that are valuable for those of us interested in other than stick (wood) construction. I highly recommend this book as a good starting point to those who prefer NOT to pound nails in wood!

A Must Read

I'm not one to write many reviews on books, though I am quite the bibliophile. My reason is simply because I never feel I have the correct literary vocabulary to get my thoughts across to those who read the reviews. However, this book deserves my getting over that and letting anyone know that might be the least bit interest in this book's subject matter, to jump in with both feet. This is a joy to read. This author doesn't suffer like I do from the lack of the right words to convey his ideas and feelings and knowledge of Buddhism. I have read many, many books on the Buddha and Buddhism and all its branches and I can say that this ranks on my Top 5 list. It is comprehensive, humorous, thought-provoking, entertaining and never, ever, dry and overly academic. it is a real person writing about a marvelous philosophy for living, in real people's language. Try it. you'll like it!!

A book with the power to change your life

Over the last 15 years I’ve discovered three books that have profoundly changed my perception of the world and how I interact with it. ‘The road home’ is the fourth. It’s an eloquent book taking the reader on an exploration of the path to inner peace and how that’s a prerequisite for sustainable and inclusive development of society.

“It’s a mark of great spiritual laziness to take the world we inherit as a given."

Ethan explains the inner road home in a contemporary context using Buddhist philosophy as a backdrop to provide terminology, depth and tools for individual and community exploration.

It’s by far the best book on Buddhism I’ve read and an excellent introduction for those new to Buddhism.

As I write this I’m hesitant to stress ‘Buddhism' to not alienate anybody not familiar with Buddhism and may perceiving Buddhism as a religious esotericism. But as Ethan writes Buddhism is the science of the mind and this book is a must read for anybody curious in understanding and harnessing the power of their mind.

The Best Buddhist Book I've Read in 12 Months! Highly recomemded!

Ethan Nichtern's The Road Home is a revelation. It's the best Buddhist book I have read in the last 12 months (and I read a lot of them). It has lofty praise in the Introduction from Sharon Salzberg no less calling him "the future of Buddhism." He lives up to the praise in the book. Most Buddhist books are full of intellectual and hard to read prose. Ethan's prose, on the hand, is straightforward, clear and actually for the modern age - there are a lot of references to 21st century concepts, some very funny. He also mentions Radiohead as his fave band which I loved :).

The book uses the notion of a "Commuter", for people who go through life, clouded by ignorance, who are unaware. This book teaches you how to take the journey home using Tibetan Buddhism and Shambala traditions. But at all times, it's clear and understandable. This book has taught me a lot as a practicing Buddhist. Get this book today!!

Looking for the mind set of a professional player? This is your book!

I have followed Steve's methodology on tennis for decades. I thought I had learned all there was to learn from him, however once I read this book I realized I was just scratching the surface of his knowledge.

This book helped me through some very tough matches, every time I was in a crunch point I would think back to what I had read and applied it. Since reading this book I am finding my self less stressful and much more focused in the crucial moments of a match. It has really helped me maintain my focus without losing control of my emotions.

I suggest anyone read this if they are looking to gain the upper edge on their games during those difficult point and matches!!

Could have been better

Quite an in-depth look at the episodes and themes of the television show, Supernatural. Looks at each episode from seasons one to four and other bits and pieces relating to the characters, motivations and plots. Not well edited though, and not entirely well written - could have done with a better proof reader. Also shows the author's quite bizarre prejudices in places and their opinions on odd things - such as calling a character a 'dick' being considered awful swearing. And some of the author's conclusions are spurious and makes me wonder if they were watching the same show...
But not a bad book and for those that want to talk about the topics and episodes raised it's a good starting point. Just not the be all end all it could have been. Shame.

*sigh* I truly hate to be mean.

I truly hate writing bad reviews. I mean I actually made it all the way through the book. This book had potential. It was non-stop action if you like that type of book. The problem was that there are a lot of mistakes in the book. I'm not talking poor grammar, but the wrong word inserted instead of a simple misspelling. Also incorrect sayings 'death keel' instead of 'death knell'.

The author has obviously never had a flat on a motorcycle, explosive decompression of the rear wheel of a motorcycle will cause the bike to fishtail as the rear tire has no purchase it will fail to grasp the road. Both tires being blown out will just cause the bike to immediately flip out from under you no matter how experienced a rider you are. This is especially true with a passenger because you will not be able to work together well enough to keep the bike under control.

Another issue is the two 'spies' in the book. The male is a young Bond wanna be who is just irritating and the female well, she proves this author shouldn't write female characters. Her first response to the protagonist is to refer to her as 'Bitch" and to come off with a 'you best keep your hands off my man' attitude (the other spy). The protagonist at one point early on is tortured and is still squeamish about hurting the mercenaries sent to capture her to take her back to the lab where she was tortured... so they can torture her more to study the nano-tech.

This might be a good read for Teen/YA but really not up to snuff for anyone who is not looking for a mindless 'shoot 'em up' type book.

Needs work

First I'd like to say this book has potential to be a good read the nannites and evil corporations was a good first start but one this book should have been longer quite a bit longer although I do get this is probably just setting the stage for later books two there were grammar errors not incredibly bad but the person view kept shifting at odd places if your gonna have the story told by a the main character viewpoint then stick with that and only use other viewpoint to bring in necessary plot points. There were some mechanics in the book that didn't really make sense like the back tire being blown out and them not crashing. Using the nannies to pull off really cool stuff is fine that's the entire point just make sure everything else works the way it should. But I have to say if you can work out the problems in this book I will definitely continue reading this series.

This is a nice short action story

This is a nice short action story. Think of it this way: an action short for YouTube, where the heroine develops superpowers, the mad scientist is an idiot (in a totally mad science way) and the evil company is represented by in the typically greedy, causally evil guy in charge. So, fun to read.

Do not, however, think too hard about character's motivations, or peer review, or academics. Don't think too hard about plot, or science, or computers, or artificial intelligence. Don't worry about the government, or the police, or lawsuits or anything like that. This is a fun action story, so don't mess it up by thinking too much!

About the Author
Bill McLean has taught a variety of economics courses during the past 13 years. His experience includes instructing both at the college and high school levels where he has taught Advanced Placement (AP) Microeconomics and Macroeconomics, Principles of Microeconomics, Intermediate Macroeconomics as well as Money and Banking. He is a reader for the National AP Economics Exam. His primary research covers economic education and economic teaching pedagogies. He earned his B.A. in Business Administration from Columbus State University and M.B.A from Florida Institute of Technology. He also holds a M.A. in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College. He is currently completing a Ph.D. in Economics at Oklahoma State University.

Inspiring Ideas to Start Your Students' Day

Wow. There are some really fantastic ideas here to get all your students' day off in the right direction. One of my favorites is his brilliant idea to quickly and efficiently get an idea of how each and every individual student is feeling at the start of the day. What a simple, but effective, tool to build a foundation for figuring out what is going on with a student in a holistic way. And I absolutely love the idea about the quotes too. It seems like a great way to inspire children and get them thinking about the things that really matter. Overall, I was very impressed with how much can be accomplished in the first 10 minutes of a class if you're focused and organized about it. This is a great resource for any teacher!

Useful for all ages

As an educator-writer myself, I very much appreciate Steve Reifman's perspective and advice gleaned from years of teaching. His technique could also be useful for adult education instructors like me. First of all, it is a great approach for classes with cohorts where you have a longer term relationship. It requires a bit of commitment and training at the beginning of a class to get the students used to this method. But once students know what to expect, this 10 minute approach is a very efficient and effective set of "ice breakers." Though I would have to make some modifications, as a whole, Steve's First 10 Minutes approach sound like the kind of activities that my students would really appreciate. Although they are so results-driven, at the same time adults often crave this type of socio-emotional connection with peers even more than children, because adults are usually expected to care for their own emotional needs. The First 10 Minutes: A Classroom Morning Routine that Reaches and Teaches the Whole Child is a quick read, definitely worth the price, and would give any good instructor some ideas and a window into an effective classroom in action.

I expected more from this book...the title looked good.It gave a scanty few pages 5.5minutes to read! The ideas were ok but not really expanded(, though an excellent way to start class with quotes and thinking in terms ofcharacter traits) obviously another book,and the other links didn't respond,the cost was the same as the novel Atlantis gene... A400 page thriller...so disapointed.

A Smoking Hot Novella

Twofer is going to be a difficult novella to review. Sweet. Humorous. Fluffy. Lusty. Innocent yet jaded. Not realistic. Did I read it like it was crack? Sure did. Did I want to smack Frankie & Jeremy upside the head? Every freaking scene, I did. Was the book hot? Flaming hot. 80% lusty antics and 20% storyline. But the 20% storyline didn't make a lick of sense.

Twofer was entirely irresponsible, illogical, flighty, just like two 19 year old guys, I guess. This made for a frustrating read, and not in a good way.

Frankie was a fully-fleshed out character with a diverse family, a job, school troubles dealing with math, and a rich need for religion. A flirt, loving the freedom of no commitment hookups, but he slowly falls in love with his roommate. Frankie was all-around a great, flawed character that readers could either identify with or understand.

Jeremy is a bit one-dimensional. All the reader gets to know is he's socially awkward and a virgin who has never touched another person. Ever. But somehow he just knows he's a bottom. But there is no true emotional depth. Jeremy doesn't show the love, lust, and pain like Frankie was written.

Bottom line: the guys don't think they can make a go of it because they are both bottoms, so they ignore their feeling for each other while on a quest to get Jeremy laid by a top, leading to it being a twofer. Obviously someone was bound to get hurt. This bothered me as their emotions took a backseat to their need to get off(constantly), when they had no issue getting off with each other. The times they hooked up with others was awkward at best, and the scenes where they were together alone shined.

Recommended: If you're into a sex-fest of illogical proportions, this novella is for you. If you find awkward and uncomfortable hookups amusing or hot, give this a read. But if you're a reader who wants the narrators to show some growth, find a compromise, or are totally against an HEA that doesn't involve monogamy (or at least a compromise with someone other than a random hookup), then this book is not for you.

There's not a lot that I can say about this tale other than the above. It has immature characters, threesomes that will likely continue in the leads' future (they're both bottoms, ahem), some really unsexy sex, and as a redeemer, a decent, loving friendship.

For me, it all hinged around, 'why on earth didn't these best friends just talk to each other?' as that could have avoided the awkward scenes in this tale. I'm not sure what's happened to DH, but for me, the author's gone from writing decent tales to ones that I would prefer not to have read. This'll be the last book of hers that I bother with.

Sweet, Sexy, Charming, Yet a Bit Unconventional When It Comes to the Concept of HEA!

When it comes to m/m romances I'm drawn to reads that manage to blend steamy encounters with sweet and tender moments. While this latest offering from Ms. Harris gives me just that, it also goes in an unconventional route that might not appeal to every reader but kept me fully immersed every step of the way even as I was questioning the meaning of this couple's HEA.

Jeremy is a sweet, young innocent from the Midwest who's come to college to finally experience life. Jeremy's known he was gay for a long time but wasn't able to embrace the lifestyle before now. His awkwardness though leaves him bumbling in a minefield of funny but painful dates. With his roommate Frankie playing tutor to him Jeremy soon morphs from awkward and naive to sweet and subtly sensual much to the chagrin of Frankie. While Frankie though sees sex as a passing entertainment, Jeremy sees it as part of a serious relationship which puts them at odds early on as their growing feelings become more confusing. The more time they engage in practicing and having fun has Jeremy finally realizing who he wants if he can just convince Frankie that sex and love do go together. Jeremy's an endearing character you can't help wanting to protect as his notion of romance and sex is adorable in his sincerity. I wish too that he wasn't so easily led astray as I really worried for him with some of his dates and at times I felt that he went along with things just to make others happy. With Frankie by his side though he had the support of someone who truly cared about him which gave him the strength to fully accept his sexuality.

Frankie's the complete opposite of Jeremy with his abundance of sexuality, charm, and confidence which makes him the perfect tutor. His views on sex though couldn't be more different as he sees it as a tension reliever, something to do for fun with no plans for commitment. At the start of the story he's a bit jaded when it comes to love, thinking himself incapable of being someone's boyfriend because of his numerous past hook-ups. The more time he spends with Jeremy though the more intense his feelings become and as friendship turns to jealousy he soon finds himself committing wholeheartedly despite his fears of their sexual needs pulling them apart. I enjoyed Frankie's exuberance and his sexy tutelage that ultimately had him learning something. I wish he'd been more honest with Jeremy at first as he almost ruined their connection by pushing him into something that was doomed to cause heartache. Once he accepted his feelings though he embraced what they had and was willing to do whatever necessary to keep Jeremy happy.

Though some readers may have a problem with Frankie and Jeremy's way of satisfying both of their needs through their foursome with another committed couple, I had no problem with it as it made Frankie completely accepting of the obvious truths to the feelings bubbling between the two of them. I also appreciated the unconventional path Ms. Harris took to give them their HEA as it was a unique and steamy journey. As to their HEA, I'm not entirely convinced of their staying committed as they're both young and horny, but for now theirs is a sexy and charming journey to togetherness that put a smile on my face while steaming up my glasses with each turn of the page.
