One step forward two steps back

I have several different versions of this airway guide. When I first cracked this edition open I noted that there were many more authors than the earlier editions. The chapters are in a very odd order, rather than starting with BLS and moving forward, it jumps all over the place.

The information in this text is solid, the visuals and especially the tables are quite handy. The best thing about the newest edition is that they have a section on how they came up with the particular theory, or where they obtained the studies, which allows one to go back and look at the original work.

Overall a must have for anyone who finds themselves managing an airway in an emergency. A little watered down from some of the earlier versions, but still packed with info, and much more up to date. Also printed on that glossy type textbook paper, which makes reading it harder, due to the glare. I wish they hadn't changed that from the earlier texts.

Required Text for Managing Airways

The airway is a single portion of the care of a critically ill patient or an operative candidate but is arguably the most significant and critical to get right the very first time. No book will be able to place the skill of doing that in your hands, but this book will give you exactly the amount of background information you need to learn how.

This should be a requisite text if you are in a position to manage an airway - emergently or otherwise. It covers all the algorithms from the difficult airway course developed by Dr Walls, which provides a methodical plan in dealing with basic intubation to the "Can't Oxygenate, Can't Ventilate" disasters.

I don't hesitate recommending this book to anyone interested in airway management - from prehospital providers to physicians. For those who are involved in training for anesthesia or emergency medicine, it shouldn't even be an option to not read it.

The current edition built on previous with a more significant presence of video laryngoscopy and some finessing of the airway algorithms. The rest of the text remains very solid without any significant weaknesses.

Again, I can't recommend this book highly enough - it does exactly what it needs to do to be a fixture in learning airway management.

About the Author
Samuel Birley Rowbotham (1816 – 1884) was an English inventor and writer who wrote Zetetic Astronomy: Earth Not a Globe under the pseudonym "Parallax". His work was based on his decade-long studies of the earth and was originally published as a 16-page pamphlet (1849), which he later expanded into a 430-page book (1881). According to his method, which he called Zetetic Astronomy, the earth is an enclosed plane, centered at the North Pole and bounded along its outward edge by a wall of ice, with the sun, moon, planets, and stars only a few hundred miles above the surface of the earth.

Good read, worth the $

Good book, a little tough to read with the smaller print. Many proven experiments. No one could read the book and not know that the earth is flat, unless they just want to lie to themselves..

This is a great book with documentation of experiments which you can reproduce yourself. I especially like the chart of distances of the earth's curvature where you should or shouldn't see objects any longer below the "horizon".

About the Author
Suzanna Medeiros was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. Her love for the written word led her to pursue a degree in English Literature from the University of Toronto. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Education degree, but graduated at a time when no teaching jobs were available. After working at a number of interesting places, including a federal inquiry, a youth probation office, and the Office of the Fire Marshal of Ontario, she decided to pursue her first love—writing. A great read!!

It is supposed to be a brief courtship in name only, but outside forces seem determined to see Kerrick married to that other woman and to keep him and Catherine apart
I really liked the character Catherine. Her life has undergone a rapid transformation from near poverty to living among the ton in a year. She displays a strength that most historical romance heroines lack. She is more interested in gardening and rare plant specimens than the teas, balls and routs that are a daily occurance. One thing that has remainded consistent for her over the past year is her admiration and interest in Kerrick. He is her brother in laws best friend and a frequent presence in her home. In the first book in the series, Kerrick played a rather interesting role in bringing together his friend Nicholas and Catherine’s sister Louisa. Thankfully it’s his turn for a book as he is a great character!
Kerrick thinks Catherine is lovely. He has been warned off by both Nicholas and Louisa. He knows he needs to stay away from her, yet he can’t. He finds her so refreshing and irresistible. He wants to make her happy and cares about her emotions. When she says she’s bored with the ton activities, he seizes on her interest in gardens to get her a private tour of the best gardens in England. He hovers over her and watches the young bucks try to win her affections with a much clenched jaw.
Being put in his place by Nicholas is the least of his troubles in courting Catherine. His mother desperately wishes for him to marry Rose Worthington, a lovely young lady and the success of the season. Aside from the familial interest, his contact with the London spy agency he has helped in the past requires him to investigate the family to see if the father is selling secrets to the French. You feel how heavy his heart is when he must take on this one last task before retiring all obligations to the crown. It doesn’t dampen his attachment to Catherine, just makes him so disappointed at the charade he must play.
Catherine is no fool. She knows something is up with the change in his behaviour. She confronts him one night at his home and they waste little time exploring the situation and each other. It was a beautifully written love scene. He was so hot for her and yet kind and gentle. Catherine knows that Rose is a contender and she harbours hope that this will change things between them. Kerrick must let her in on the ruse. He must pretend to court Rose in order to gain information and be free of his obligations to the crown. Catherine is a quick one and picks up on how she can help, and you can hear Kerrick groaning already.
Catherine befriends Rose. She quickly learns that Rose has no desire or intention to marry Kerrick. She knows nothing of her father’s financial situation, but knows that he is pushing the match with tenacity. She is in love with someone else and quite astutely realizes that Catherine loves Kerrick. In a fun turn of events, she wants to match make for them! I really liked Rose, she isn’t a vain or snobby debutante, but a young woman who is very vulnerable to the decision the men in her life make for her. Her book will be next and I am SUPER excited to read it!
The plot with the spying works its way out as Catherine and Kerrick hang in there for its resolution. They know it’s the only way they can be together. It seems like everyone, from her family, his family, the Worthington’s, some creepy Lords who desire Rose and Catherine, are all trying to keep them apart. It made the depth of their love seem real and the longing they had for each other almost feel painful.
The wrong woman is compromised, an almost forced marriage, a spy caught and a brother in law incensed is the denouement of the story. It was a great ending, if a little sad. For Catherine and Kerrick to be together, the mission on the Worthington’s had to be successful. That meant that Rose was a victim with disastrous consequences. I am so glad that we will get her story next and I’m sure she will get her happy ending.
What moved me the most about this book was the gesture Kerrick made in order to win back Catherine. He had delivered an orange tree from the Botanical gardens they visited earlier so she could nurse it back to health. However, he knows her home is unsuitable and was already having a greenhouse built at his estate so she could indulge in her passions. That is true love.

This is book 2 in the Landing a Lord series.

Catherine Evan has been in love with the Earl of Kerrick since they met. Unfortunately, she has had to wait to have her coming out to pursue him. As the season starts, Catherine eagerly awaits having her first dance with Kerrick. She soon learns that Kerrick's mother has plans for Kerrick to marry the daughter of her best friend, but that doesn't stop them from forming an attachment as he has no plans to marry the other woman.

Unbeknown to most of the ton, Kerrick works for the government and has one last assignment. He must pretend to court a young woman, the very one his mother wants him to marry, to get close to her father to see if he is a traitor.

Can Kerrick save the relationship he has just started with Catherine while trying to do his job or will she be swept up by someone else?

I've been eagerly awaiting Kerrick's story since I read Loving the Marquess. Medeiros did not disappoint. She had me laughing throughout the story with the witty conversation and antics of the characters which is what brings me back to reading more from an author.

Medeiros does a great job of getting you invested in her secondary characters. They have as much depth of character as the H/H of the story, which leaves the reader hoping to see them again! I was happy to read at the end of the novel that Rose (the other woman) and Brantford (Kerrick's boss) would be getting their story next. I can't wait to read it!!

Light regency romance and good addition to the series

Catherine has had a secret crush for the Earl of Kerrick, her new brother-in-law's friend, ever since she meets him. While he is eleven years her senior, Kerrick is starting to see Catherine in a new light and finding he is searching out her company more and more. Just when he decides to make a move, the Earl of Brantford calls in an owed favor for the War Office. Kerrick suddenly finds himself paying court to Rose, the daughter of Lord Worthington who is under investigation for alleged traitorous deeds towards the crown. While Catherine learns of Kerrick's secret activities and the reasons behind them fairly quickly, the situation is abounding with feelings of betrayal, trust issues, and unanswered questions.

Beguiling the Earl is second in a series which I think lead to it starting off a bit rough as the author worked to get new readers up to speed on past events and get all the characters introduced. I read the previous book and the novella but feel this one could be read as a standalone, there is only one or two times new readers might feel lost. After the first couple chapters however, the author seems to settle in and gain her stride as the story and main characters take off. As mentioned, Kerrick is working for the War Office as a pseudo spy investigating Lord Worthington but we never get to see him do anything of value besides a mention of searching the Lord's office for incriminating evidence. Catherine almost does as much when she befriends Rose and gleans information about Worthington's financial straits. The spy thread is very thin and is an obvious mechanism to keep our leads apart and create drama. Fortunately, Catherine and Kerrick have enough charm to keep the reader interested.

Catherine is calm, no nonsense, and drama free character that is refreshing to read about. The story could have easily devolved into a Big Misunderstanding with Kerrick fake courting Rose but Catherine took her knowledge of Kerrick and asked the pertinent questions from him and Kerrick, bless his heart, trusted her to handle the truth. This created a story where the couple worked together to not only solve a problem but to keep trust in each other; a treat to read about. Other than his honesty though, Kerrick doesn't really stick out, he is almost bland in his average regency hero status. As the two meet and began developing feelings for each other in the previous book, there is sort of a missed pleasure of seeing and feeling them fall in love as the bulk of this story is them working to ultimately be able to announce their engagement.

Overall this is a good addition to the series and perfect if you are looking for something a little more light and don't want to be too taxed while reading. The next couple in the series is also introduced and highlighted a good amount with enough appeal that I'm for sure adding it to my tbr pile. I have to know if Rose's father is truly guilty and if the Unaffected Earl can continue to hide his feelings.

This one is a total homerun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I admit it... I am an unrepentant Tom Peters fanatic and have been for 20+ years. But even with that said, there have been a few (very few) of Tom's books that I felt were...uh... "Less-than-excellent."(small "e") So it was with a bit of trepidation that I sat down to read his newest book: "The Little BIG Things - 163 Ways to Pursue EXCELLENCE." At 507 pages of main text, it is a significant commitment for many readers to undertake the study of this book weighty tome... and I promise you it is worth every single page of it! I read it cover-to-cover (twice) in the span of two days of flying to meet with clients. I simply could NOT put it down, as I was greedy to get to the next page of TP wisdom and wisecracking. If you are a Tom Peters devote' you will recognize much (nearly all) of what this book contains... and that is just fine. It is filled with a relentless parade of "TP's Greatest Hits" that keep slapping you in the face and pushing you to think, adjust, change and take action. If you are a business leader of ANY kind - you MUST read this book. I absolutely GUARANTEE you will find not one... not two... but 20 or 30 game-changing ideas that could truly take your business and your career to a completely new level. As someone who has read a MINIMUM of 100 - 120 business books a year, every year since 1989, (and it all started with In Search Of Excellence!) I will tell you with NO hesitation that "The Little BIG Things" is now in my top 5 all-time favorites. YES - it is that good! Mr. Peters... this one is a complete homerun!!!!!!!!!

Very helpful and very useful with one caveat...

I've been listening to Tom's "The Little Big Things" and reading along on the Kindle version. Tom likes to zero in on simple ideas that can have a powerful impact on the success of a business (small, medium or large). This is a really healthy approach to helping businesses succeed. Folks like to read, absorb and apply...not spend all kinds of time trying to understand graphs, analyses, and information presented all-too-often intended to impress than to assist. So Tom scores very big points throughout in getting us immediately useable information.

There is one item I strongly disagree with in the book. Tom says:

"I argue here and elsewhere that the *only* effective source of innovation is pissed-off people! Hence, bite your tongue and cherish such misfits!" (the word *only* was in italics presumably for emphasis)

I'm sure some points of innovation come from pissed-off people, and I imagine Tom has considerably more examples of this than I do. But I'm also sure superb innovation has come from those not pissed-off at all. This I've seen with my own eyeballs on quite a few occasions. And sometimes these pissed-off misfits are just that: pissed-off misfits with no innovation whatsoever in their space. Quite the contrary, some are involved with undoing innovation, creativity and productivity. So I'm not on the look-out for pissed-off misfits nor should you be. Be on the look-out for innovation in whatever form it presents itself. Then check it out, test it out and use it liberally when you see it gets the desired results.

Being an automotive management major, I find that a substantial amount of the practices, ethics and concepts detailed in this book could be applied to a future position of mine. They're not something I've come across yet, but would definitely apply to my ongoing and future career.

Amazingly compelling true story told in a very accessible format

'Operation Ajax' by Mike De Seve and art by Daniel Burwen is a fascinating read. It's also an app for the iPad, and I bet that it's a good one.

If you want to know why Iran has a hatred of the West, this book will clear it up for you. It tells the story of Iran, from the discovery of oil, up to the end of 'Operation Ajax' where Prime Minister Mossaddegh is ousted in 1953. We see first the UK, then the US playing politics with Iran with the hopes of securing oil. British Petroleum was founded based on this. We see the frustration on both sides, but we see the Iranian people being used as pawns to foment revolution and eventually a coup. The story would be a fascinating fictional thriller, but it's all true.

What a compelling way to tell the story. Using a graphic novel this way brings in non-historians and students and presents a story that comes alive. I knew about some of this, but I appreciated the chance to learn more. It's no wonder our relations with Iran and it's people are so shaky even to this day.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Verso Books and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

Absolutely THE most incredibly mind-blowing history lesson I've ever experienced. Period

I was THOROUGHLY blown away by this book. The fact that it was ENTIRELY based on, and is what amounts to a true retelling of, actual events that have since impacted the entire world as we know it, makes it even more incredible to me. This was indeed a case of "stranger than fiction" and I found myself flabbergasted at the sheer magnitude of deception and the lengths our country and others would/will go to in order to secure their own ends.
It reads like a Hollywood plot, only all of it actually happened. What's more, actual photo-copies of the now de-classified files all of it is based on are included in the book. I'm not one for spoilers and long-winded reviews that are actually cliff-notes of an entire story so I'll leave it at this. If you enjoy good art, good storytelling via sequential art as the medium, and you think you might be interested in learning about a HUGE moment in the completely sordid history of our involvement in the destabilization of the middle east- look no further.
This book is incredible from start to finish.
The pacing, the artwork, the frames, the coloring.. all are top-notch.
It held my attention throughout, creating art out of a history lesson and educating me while holding me spellbound.
I'd go so far as to recommend it to history teachers [if they're interested in teaching actual history].

If you think you understand the Middle East, but you don't know the story of Operation Ajax, then you probably don't actually understand the Middle East. This gorgeous, complex graphic novel expertly tells the little-known true story of a CIA operation which essentially overthrew the democratically-elected government of Iran in the 1950s.
It's an utterly-engrossing, masterfully-woven tapestry of intrigue, conspiracy, politics, ambition and avarice laid out across the globe.

This is a brilliant, important book, and I, quite simply, cannot recommend it highly enough!

Buy this book for a beginners guide to live sound mixing!

I love how this book is written- organized, matter-of-fact, and with technical illustrations. It's a great place to start if one is trying to learn how to control a feedback issue in a PA. Also, it comes with a DVD of .mp3s of examples of different things such as, *what* it sounds like to boost the highs at 16khz, or what a "60-cycle hum" sounds like. The examples are very helpful and should not be ignored or not purchased, in the case of a used book. It's worth the book to get the companion DVD. Together they've become valuable tools in my daily work life.

The perfect book for self-taught sound folks looking for more

This book is the shizzle. I am pretty much a self-taught sound person who at this point has way more questions than answers. If, like me, you have a general idea of what sounds good and what sounds nasty, as well as a strong desire to learn more but no resources beyond a circle of other self-taught sound people with vastly different opinions and ideas on how to get good sound, this book is for you. I found Bill Gibson's straightforward, patient, small-word, and helpfully redundant writing style and textbook layout to be spot on and just exactly what I was looking for. Like bringing water to the desert. The best part was that it gave me a conceptual framework to organize what I already know, or thought I knew, and gave me enough information to be comfortable with diving deeper into the minutiae with other resources. More than just a textbook you read cover-to-cover and then never crack again, this has already become a handy resource I refer back to before during and after every gig. And that's BEFORE we get to the accompanying CD! The sound samples were an excellent companion to the text and perfectly illustrated all of the concepts on the book.
My favorite quote: "If you are a sound operator and you never have volume or sound complaints, then you're very good, very well-liked, very diplomatic, or very scary-looking."

Great Book!

I recently took an online course in audio engineering. It was only a 3 month online course, so obviously a bit limited in what was covered. however, it did cover a lot of areas. I got this book because I wanted to learn even more. I have always believed that if you really want to learn something well, no matter what the subject matter, you should try to learn from multiple sources. This book is actually a great extension for the course I had taken. It even covers a lot of the material my course did.

I purchased this from amazon for $26 but the cover price is actually $39. Great deal! Lots of great illustrations for the purpose of driving various concepts home. I highly recommend it for any musician looking to either improve his live sound or produce quality home studio recordings.

Actually, I was looking for something about the process from a small business perspective. It is an interesting book about the current screen printing market, but I was hoping for a more "how to" publication, and I guess I misunderstood the subject matter.

As the American Civil War raged on, Louisiana's Sarah Morgan complained to her diary, "Oh! if I were only a man. Then I could don the breeches, and slay them with a will!" Though Morgan never did "don the breeches," in All the Daring of the Soldier, historian Elizabeth D. Leonard reveals that many women did. Leonard recounts the stories of dozens of women who joined the war effort, such as Richard Anderson, a.k.a. Amy Clarke, who fought with her Confederate cavalry regiment at the battle of Shiloh. Other women served as "Daughters of the Regiment," doing everything from serving as mascots and nurses to bearing regimental colors in battle and even fighting in combat. Still others engaged in espionage, such as Elizabeth Van Lew, who hid behind a cultivated persona and the nickname Crazy Bet so that she could spy for the Union.

Interesting capsule biographies aside, the strength of this book lies in Leonard's historical analysis. While many historians (and most Civil War novelists) have assumed that women went to war because they were motivated by love--either of men or their country--Leonard is quick to point out that whereas many women did follow the men they loved, and that others were sincere patriots, many others were motivated by economic need or even the desire for adventure and a wider range of opportunity than 19th-century society allowed them. Leonard's thorough research in archives and memoirs adds great detail to these women's stories and makes All the Daring of the Soldier an excellent addition to both the scholarly and general literature on the Civil War. --C.B. At the core of this well-researched investigation into the role of women in the Civil War armies is a sensitivity to the plight of Victorian-era women. Leonard (Yankee Women) notes that "domestic service continued in the late nineteenth century to represent the primary waged occupation for women." It's no wonder, then, that a few intrepid women decided that the war offered them a better chance to be all that they could be. A Colby College history professor, Leonard has plowed through archives to bring readers the stories of dozens of women who served in both the Union and Confederacy during the Civil War. Some were spies, but many more adopted men's names, dressed in men's clothes and lived and fought and died alongside mostly unsuspecting men. One Union general "became outraged when an unnamed sergeant under his command 'was delivered of a baby,' which, he irately noted 'is in violation of all military law and of the army regulations.'" Often, when women were discovered in the ranks, they were accused of being clever prostitutes who enlisted because of the promise of steady business. Leonard dismisses this theory, noting that there was hardly a need for prostitutes to go incognito. Leonard's engaging portraits of these female soldiers are neatly contextualized, and she makes it clear that women enlisted because they were patriots, because they wanted to be near husbands and brothers and, perhaps above all, because they felt the war offered them a chance at autonomy and adventure. A collection of stories about women who spied for the Blue or the Gray or who disguised themselves in male attire to join the Civil War armies. Leonard (History/Colby Coll.) writes of famous documented female spies such as Belle Boyd, who provided intelligence to Stonewall Jackson in the Shenandoah; Rose O'Neal Greenhow, who reported Union intentions and positions to Confederate general Beauregard at the First Battle of Bull Run; Antonia Ford, who cultivated a friendship with Union general Stoughton while feeding information to Jeb Stuart that led to the ambush and capture of Stoughton, his troops, and supplies; Elizabeth Van Lew of Richmond, an antislavery Southerner who provided much underground intelligence to Yankee officers and tended Union POWs in Libby Prison; and Pauline Cushman, who scouted and spied for the Union Army of the Cumberland. Since the war was fought mostly on Southern soil, most female spies were Southerners who knew the land and people. Leonard offers many tales of women dressing as men who tried to follow their husbands or lovers into recruiting regiments where physical exams were minimal or nonexistent and who would mix with teenage ``beardless boys.'' They were attracted by generous bounty money and steady pay that was much higher then what they could earn as domestics, but patriotism and desire for adventure also played a role. Most were discovered eventually but were treated with traditional chivalry; even spies were usually simply discharged and sent home. Other women performed valuable servicesnursing, washing, cooking, and smuggling letters, scarce medicines, and supplies in their ample clothingbut were tagged with the derogatory term ``camp followers.'' Leonard also cites heroic female performances on the battle-fronts: women treating wounded, seizing fallen colors, and taking up arms themselves. I am the author of "Memories of Maggie" and "Potpourri Of War" so I readily ordered this new book to learn more about the women who served during the Civil War.
"All the Daring of the Soldier" was excellent. It brought forth more women than I was even aware of who did so much for their country during the Civil War. Elizabeth D. Leonard should be proud of the work she put into her research and writing. This book should be a welcomed item to anyone's collection but especially for students to learn more women's history.
I only have one complaint. There was no mention of Dr. Mary Edwards Walker who also served during the Civil War and was ultimately the only woman to date to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor for her actions during the war. I hope this was just an oversight on the author's part.
BUT believe the rest of this book is wonderful!

Is it Worth it?

Though the beginning of the book was a little dry, it continues to improve. It's greatest strength is the use of personal stories and accounts of those who actually knew the women.

As the book begins, many women are mentioned who had small, some might say even insignificant, role in the Civil War. This part is the book is the more dry area, but when the author, Elizabeth D. Leonard, begins to focus on the five most prominent women who helped to illicit information from the enemy, it again improves. This style of writing continues throughout the book, first mentioning several women whom not much is known about, then sharing the story of a well-known Unionist or Confederate female. Another strength of this book is the information that one can learn. I was surprised at some details and statistics provided. For instance, many women who brought information across enemy lines were able to do so through the use of their clothing as a means for hiding letters and even entire army uniforms. One woman strung hats and boots underneath her hoop skirt and kept letters in her hair. The statistic that six women were able to kept their pregnancy a secret (until delivery) while being enlisted under a male alias is shocking.

This book provides another look at women in the Civil War. Many believe, incorrectly, that only a few females were involved with either the Union or Confederate cause. As this book proves, however, that is not the case.

Overall, this book has an equal amount of interesting aspects, as well as dry moments. The "good" parts, however, are worth reading the book in its entirety.
