Above all, this is a book which strives to find new links between the micro-politics of daily life and the evolving structures of capitalism. “If we could find out why and when our hopes for life were buried,” Haug argues, “then we could try to take our history in our own hands.” Beyond Female Masochism provides the materials, and inspiration, to do just that.

About the Author
Charles E. Hurst is emeritus professor of sociology, having taught at The College of Wooster for 38 years.  His research has focused on issues of poverty and inequality in the U.S., the use of social theory to understand contemporary social issues, and the nature of Amish society.  He has also served as a consultant to various countywide social agencies.  He is author of Living Theory:  The Application of Classical Social Theory to Contemporary Life, and co-author of An Amish Paradox:  Diversity and Change in the World’s Largest Amish Community, which won the Dale W. Brown 2011 Book Award for outstanding scholarship in Anabaptist and Pietist Studies.

A wish book, a luxury item--yes. But there are serious watch collectors abroad in the land who not only would enjoy honing their appreciation for timeless timepieces but also could stand to learn a thing or two more about their passion, and this gorgeously illustrated large-format book is the answer. True, this book is for men; women readers are welcome, certainly, but featured here are vintage and contemporary watches for men. Watch collector Stone supplies, based on his considerable research, profiles of the 50 brands, arranged in alphabetical order, which are his personal favorites. (Other collectors and enthusiasts, as he acknowledges, might select other brands to discuss--but, after all, this is his book.) Accompanying text imparts, in several short paragraphs, the history of each brand; the beautifully photographed examples are absolutely breathtaking. Even readers who do not usually think of themselves as "watchies" will find it difficult to resist poring over these luscious pages. The best watch book ever

Finally, a great book on watches. What makes this book so special is that it works for everyone who loves timepieces, whether they're beginners or experts.

The book is divided into several sections, including a smart introduction on "what is a watch?" and an informative history of timepieces. The bulk of the book is an interesting survey of fifty of the greatest brands of all time, from Patek to Elgin, from Audemars to Zenith. Then comes one of the best parts of the book--a very useful section on how to collect and maintain your watches, plus instructive first-person accounts from some of the world's top collectors. Finally, there's a glossary of understandable definitions of the most common watch terms.

Most of all, there are over 600 stunning color illustrations, culled from auction houses, private collections, watch companies, as well as hundreds of original photographs shot exclusively for the book.

All in all, this makes a great gift and a great resource guide. What a wonderful book!

A very contempory review of fine time pieces

One of the best illustrated books you can find on fine time pieces. The nice thing about this book, besides being very thorough, is that it is very contemporary, with many examples of vintage as well as more recent time pieces.

The best watch book (FIVE STARS)

What's best about this beautiful book is that nearly everything else published about watches is sponsored by the watch industry itself. Here, finally, is an independent voice telling watch lovers, whether newbies or longtime fans, everything they ever wanted to know about the watch world. The book starts off with an extremely informative history of the watch (I had no idea that World War I was responsible for the growth of the wristwatch and the demise of the pocket watch). The meat of the book is information about the fifty brands the author feels every watch lover should know about--illustrated with some of the most beautiful photos I've ever seen. As appealing as the material is, what's more interesting is which brands are excluded from the discussion. Although the book is a celebration of watches, the most critical parts of the book are those of omission--for instance, there's nothing here about Movado's modern watches, an indication the author thinks little of them, or, in the Hamilton section, no indication that modern Hamiltons are worth buying. My favorite part of the book is the first person interviews with watch collectors, who explain how they got hooked, and what their current passions are. There's also an excellent glossary of watch terms. All in all, this is a book that belongs in every watch lover's library.

Vivid Australian boyhood memoir of the 1920's

I loved this book because the writer is so honest. He contracts polio as a child, but never really grasps that he won't be able to walk again. He simply goes about finding new ways of getting around. He's courageous with not a shred of self-pity. And his descriptions of life on a sheep station in Australia give a really good sense of the time. Recommended for readers who like memoir, travel writing (because it's set in Australia) and stories of quiet heroism.

I'm Really Enjoying This Audio Book

no matter what. if you have a disability, nothing can stop you if you try. this is what this book proves. I've just recently started reading this CD on the way home from the library this afternoon and it is like a drug addiction. you can't help but listen to the whole book through and find out what is happening with the little kid in school, who was crippled. my favourite sceen is when he fights with another school boy, gets the cane and his father tells him he has the heart of a bollick. this book brings me loads of currage.

I just continued this book today and Allen goes to stay with a neighbour and goes camping with him. also in this book, he goes fishing with his friends and "Joe Mackentire's" trousers get burnt in the camp fire. my Mum told me this book was kind of sad. I need to continue listening to it to find out what happens in the end. I only have four more chapters left.

I have just completed reading this book. Allen is determined to ride a horse. he tries to prove to his old man he can ride. his old man tries to tell him he can't because of his leg. he rides, but tears his leg. he becomes an accountant and gets a scollarship and then has to move to Melborne. this book was easy to understand, wel written and is really inspiring for anyone with disabilities with confedence issues. if I was to work with special needs kids as a teacher, I would make them read this book and study up on it, then ask questions about what happened and then to put themselves in Allen's shoes. Allen is the author.

Elizabeth Bogle has extensive experience in the planning, designing, documenting, and construction of museum exhibits and exhibitions. As the principal and founder of Limn Studios, a museum exhibition planning and designing firm, she has produced an array of domestic and international projects that include a variety of sites, themes and budgets. During her career she has been vice president of a museum exhibit construction firm, account executive for the largest exhibit construction firm in Paris, and art director for the Oil Consortiums in Tehran. As an associate professor at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, she taught museum exhibition planning and design and materials and methods of construction.

Bogle is specific in all the steps that are necessary to successfully create and complete an exhibition. Her long and impressive career as a designer informs all parts of this text adding personal context and invaluable experience. There is a wealth of information that will be beneficial to all involved in exhibition planning and design, including museum administrators, curators, and especially the designers. A must for students in Museum Exhibition studies!

Not a good presentation of agile

PRINCE2 is an awesome Framework but this book is a miserable presentation of agile. I feel like the authors took everything agile that they could find and just dumped it into the book. The reliance on process models is very confusing. Why have the authors of this and the 2009 version not used Process Flow Diagrams. In their absence I constantly have to flip all over the book trying to understand PRINCE2 Agile. The bindings on my 2009 version book and this book are falling apart from the flipping. A flow diagram is a chronological description of a process. That is intuitive. Someone new to PRINCE2 would have a hard time using PRINCE2 based on the process model. What you have offered is just the opposite. As a reference for a current PRINCE2 practitioner or professional it might be OK. Maybe the second edition will be an improvement.

Terrific!

I'm always interested in learning the techniques, methods, and thinking of other accomplished photographers, especially when it comes to one of the most challenging areas of contemporary photography--location lighting. Essentially, this book provides detailed thinking and examples of how the examples were put together--what tools were used, the circumstances of the shoot, etc.

Strongly recommend this book to lighting learners and experts alike!

It is very much a book on using flash in a way that creates a photo
that doesnt shout FLASH.
