Gua sha: A Traditional Technique for Modern Practice, 2e, by Arya Nielsen

‘Sometimes called coining, spooning or scraping, Gua sha is defined as instrument-assisted unidirectional press stroking of a lubricated area of the body surface that intentionally creates ‘transitory therapeutic petechiae’ representing extravasation of blood in the subcutis.’

Gua sha has been used for centuries in Asia, in Asian immigrant communities and by acupuncturists and practitioners of traditional East Asian medicine worldwide. With the expansion of traditional East Asian medicine, Gua sha has been used over broad geographic areas and by millions of people. It is valuable in the treatment of pain and for functional problems with impaired movement, the prevention and treatment of acute infectious illness, upper respiratory and digestive problems, and many acute or chronic disorders. Research has demonstrated Gua sha radically increases surface microperfusion that stimulates immune and anti-inflammatory responses that persist for days after treatment.

The second edition expands on the history of Gua sha and similar techniques used in early Western Medicine, detailing traditional theory, purpose and application and illuminated by science that focuses its relevance to modern clinical practice as well as scholarly inquiry. This book brings the technique alive for practitioners, with clear discussion of how to do it –including correct technique, appropriate application, individualization of treatment – and when to use it, with over 50 case examples, and superb color photographs and line drawings that demonstrate the technique.

A good work on the history and definition of the Gua Sha. Very limited information on actually doing the technique. If you're looking for an instructional work, this is not the book.

Reintroducing Gua sha to the general public
By allison brates
To my knowledge this is the only book on the market about an ancient technique used throughout Asia by family members as well as by healers and doctors of Eastern medicine. Gua sha was not included in the "menu" of techniques imported from post communist China in the body of knowledge referred to as "traditional Chinese medicine". Gua sha is not included in the curriculum of schools teaching accupuncture and Chinese medicine. Arya Nielsen Phd, has spend decades practicing accupuncture along with gua sha. In addition to initiating and participating in numerous clinical studies, she teaches gua sha and practices this medicine at a major New York hospital. She has made it her life's work to reintroduce this overlooked technique, which is inexpensive, not difficult to learn and appropriate for many clinical conditions. Her book is an introduction to the technique along with an overview of relevant Chinese medical theory and references to a copious body of clinical studies documenting the efficacy and immuno -active effects of gua sha.

lots of research supporting a very healing modality. This is for the health professional - not the lay person - too complex for lay people.

Review
"...is characteristically O'Reilly through and through - vastly detailed, confidently written and not dressed up with too many screenshots or wild page designs. Although Linux Certifcation...is structured as a front-to-back read, mirroring the order of the LPIC topics, it also features page markings to help you use it as a quick reference guide when you've worked through it. The book shows you how to prepare for the LPIC exams, with exercises and examples galore, plus a host of massively useful practice exams to give you a taste of the real thing... O'Reilly's book is a monster, covering everything in great depth, and even though it's a bit costly it's worth the price given the exhaustive coverage therein. Just don't expect any kind of entertainment along the way - it's all very serious stuff." Verdict: A bulging, desk-warping behemoth of a book, tackling LPIC topics with clarity and excellent details. Rating: 9/10 - Mike Saunders, Linux Format, May 2007

Very good book, but incomplete, explanation on the review
By faraumont
Let's begin with the results, I passed both 101 and 102 exams and got my LPI 1 last month studying mainly this book.
Let me say again that this is a very good book. It is very well written and all topics are easy to understand to anyone with some previous knowledge of computers in general and the Linux operating system.
Now, the explanation to why I said it is incomplete. It simply does not cover every command and configuration file that may be asked about on the exams. There were some of them on my exams that the book didn't even mention. Given the broadth and changing of the subjects covered by the exams, I admit that covering everything is a very difficult task. So, the warning stays to anyone in the process of studying, if it is related to the topics asked by LPI but the book does not say anything about it, don't assume it won't be asked about, because it may.

Good luck to all and congratulations to the authors.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
By Micah J. Miller
I am preparing for the LPI level one test and picked up this guide as a study reference. Overall, the quality of this book is outstanding and the material is presented in way that made it very easy to digest. I've broken the highlights down into three categories.
1. Good - Excellent explanation of the topics in the books. There were very few items I had to go to other sources from. The way this book is set up makes it great as a study guide or for future reference. Even if I wasn't going to take the test, I'd still keep this one within arms reach.
2. Bad - LPI has restructured their tests. This means that some of the 102 test topics are now in the 101 test. Make sure you get the correct list of study topics directly from LPI to ensure you are preparing for the correct subjects. Since these changes were made quite a while ago, I would have hoped that O'Reilly would have come up with a new version, but no luck.
3. UGLY - Several topics were not covered at all in the book. This is really dissapointing for me as I've always respected the O'Reilly books and found them to be way above par. But don't take my word for it. You can locate the missing parts by comparing the T-O-C and the LPI site
Overall, this is a great book. If you are currently a system administrator or work with Linux often, this matierial should be easy to pick up and understand. The book has in depth coverage along with a "Highlighters Index" for quick reviews and sample tests to help you prepare.

The Devil's Own, by Sandra Brown

From the start, Kerry Bishop anticipated danger: She expected unimaginable fear. In a terrifying race to save nine children, she prepared for the fight of her life. But she wasn’t prepared for a passion almost as dangerous as the mission she had undertaken.

At the first, Linc O’Neil appeared to be exactly the kind of man Kerry needed: strong, ruthless and definitely too drunk to care about helping her steal a truck to get past the guards. Then she discovered her mistake. Linc was not a hardened mercenary; the heavy gear he carried was not guns but cameras. She had hijacked a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist. Now he was their last hope.

Dependent on a stranger, Kerry refused to let unexpected desire complicate their mission. If Linc had the mistaken impression that she was a woman of the church, she was not about to correct him. Certainly, it kept him at arm’s length, which was just where she wanted this man who, despite his bad attitude and constant stream of threats, was their one chance for survival through fifty miles of treacherous jungle.

And survival was all they could think about. But if they succeeded, what then? Could Kerry tell him the truth: that she was no more a woman sworn to chastity than she was immune to the powerful effect he had on her? That she desired him more and more? If freedom came, would they be free to love?

Heroine Is Ridiculous & Plot is Unrealistic...
By Tracy Talley
I wanted so much to love this story but I couldn't. The heroine is so ridiculous and out of touch with reality that I actually laughed out loud at the things she said and did.

The fact that she is in Mexico during 1986 during some kind of rebellion and trying to smuggle 9 orphans out was pushing it, but when she waltzes into a seedy bar and grabs the first drunk man she finds to help her with these helpless kids I had to laugh.

She not only forces this poor guy to help her, but she ruins his life and destroys his things to get her way when he is trying to leave the war torn country before he is killed. I wanted to shove her down a hill and tell the hero to run, lol.

The 'romance' scenes were a bit much considering the circumstances and really based on fantasy considering they are 11 helpless people trying to get out of a country crawling with rebels. This hero kind of surprises me at times for being someone who was in Vietnam, Cambodia, and so forth and can't seem to get his act together here in Mexico. He was almost like the heroine in that aspect.

The characters didn't convince me they were meant to be together and the heroine's lack of intelligence and depth made it seem all the more uninteresting. The hero deserved better IMO.

If you're new to Sandra Brown, skip this one and try another of her better ones. This is an older book and the writing shows it age.

Kerry knew she taking a chance trying to smuggle 9 orphans out of a hostile country on her own, so she takes a chance and 'coerces' the largest and most disreputable man she can find in the bar to help her cause.

Linc is NOT happy about what happens to him and how he is tricked, but he can't seem to turn away from the helpless woman and the 9 kids. He knows he is going to pay for this and pay dearly.

Sandra at her Romantic Best!
By Christine Shaw
Kerry Bishop was looking for a mercenary soldier, someone who was disreputable and fearless, who could help her rescue nine orphans from a war-torn country. That type of man would be the only kind of person able to help her accomplish her mission. So disguised as a hooker, she entered the bar.
Linc O'Neal, world renowned photojournalist, sat at the bar celebrating the fact that he would be leaving this god-forsaken country where he had just completed his assignment. He was tired, dirty and looked just as bad as some of the local patrons. Perhaps he was celebrating just a little too much because the hooker who just walked up to him looked too good to be true. But he was on his way out of the country and had no time for her. Little did he know that his plans were about to change!
Was Kerry able to get this mean-looking man to help her? You will have to read the book to find out the rest of the story. If you think this sounds interesting--it is. And does it get any better--it sure does. This is one of Sandra's earlier Silhouette Intimate Moments. Just one of the many romantic stories that made her so popular. Sandra was one of the top romance writers early in her career and this book proves she deserved the title as one of the best. If you are a romance fan, I am certain you will enjoy this one!
"The Devil's Own" brings back Cage and Jenny Hendren from "Led Astray". You may want to read that book first. Also an excellent romantic read from Brown.

The Road to Galaxy Formation (Springer Praxis Books), by William C Keel

The formation of galaxies is one of the greatest puzzles in astronomy, the solution is shrouded in the depths of space and time, but has profound implications for the universe we observe today. This book discusses the beginnings of the process from cosmological observations and calculations. It examines the different theories of galaxy formation and shows where each theory either succeeds or fails in explaining what we actually observe. In addition, the book looks ahead to what we may expect to uncover about the epoch of galaxy formation from the new and upcoming generations of telescopes and technology.

Review

From the reviews of the second edition:

"The work is clearly a labor of love. It immerses the reader in a thorough explanation of the latest data from modern ground- and space-based observatories. From Hubble’s original galaxy classification system to the standard cosmological model, it is all here. This is a well-organized, well-placed, and thoroughly referenced ‘golden review’ of galactic formation and evolution--a must have for any serious student or scientist in the field. Summing Up: Essential. Upper-division undergraduate through professional collections." (T. D. Oswalt, CHOICE, Vol. 45 (8), 2008)

"Keel explores in this book … that the assembly of galaxies as we now see them has occurred continuously over the past 12 or 13 Gyr and can be studied in at least two ways: by looking far back, at large redshifts, and by winkling out the oldest stars surviving in the Milky Way and other nearby galaxies. … Keel’s style is conversational; indeed the book is delightfully written, and the annotations to the bibliographic items pithy and informative." (Virginia Trimble, The Observatory, Vol. 128 (1203), 2008)

a gem of science culture
By drollere
this is one of those books that is indispensable not because it is comprehensive or groundbreaking, but because it brings the reader into the center of the science it describes. by turns skeptical or tendentious, expansive or selective, the reader is given the recent history of cosmology (including thumbnail portraits of some of the major protagonists, such as zwicky), the development of concepts and evidence, the major interpretations of the evidence with their residual questions and mysteries, and finally a review of some future proposed space and earth observatories. the narrative begins with "a cosmological cartoon" (cartoon here meaning "sketch") that lays out the key elements -- red shift, relativity, large scale structure and microwave background -- then builds cumulatively to a theory of how galaxies form from stars and gas, and evolve a variety of forms, clusters and interactions. attention is directed to the various forms of observational bias that distort out understanding of what and how much is really out there, and popular glamor topics (such as black holes) take a back seat to the effort to understand the universe as an evolving ecology of enormous dimensions. all in a book that can be easily completed in a week of evenings.

A must for observational astronomers studying galaxy evolution
By S. Salim
Most advanced astronomy books fall into two categories: textbooks and conference proceedings. The case is similar for the topic of galaxy evolution. Textbooks are not that essential for observational astronomers, while conference proceedings are often of very non-uniform quality and by their nature are very discrete in coverage. "The Road to Galaxy Formation" (currently in its second edition) fills the void for a good overview of modern observational study of galaxy evolution. It quickly covers basics and then goes into a very insightful overview of the current state of knowledge and many unresolved problems. The level and the style of the book is that of some expertly written (and interesting) discussion section in an astronomy paper. Focusing on observational results, the book is almost devoid of equations, but has a number of key plots and figures and references to astronomical papers. For graduate students this book can be an excellent way to get an overview of the field without reading hundreds of papers, while for more advanced researchers it can serve to put their research into perspective and gain some additional insight.

A Professional Text Invaluable to the Interested Amateur Astronomer
By Howard L Ritter, Jr., M.D.
I'm not in a position to give a professional-level review of a book written for professional astronomers. But as one of that group of individuals who are longtime amateur astronomers who are just as interested in the science as in observation of the heavens and who have in their personal libraries a couple of shelves of astronomy texts and popularizations, I can review it for my own tribe. And from that point of view, I can say that this book is well worth owning and reading. (Full disclosure: My high opinion of Prof. Keel's book in its first edition was formed before I had a chance encounter with him years ago in the gift shop at Kitt Peak National Observatory that led to introductions and mutual surprise that I was currently in the process of reading this very book; and it was not in the least influenced by his generosity in treating me to a tour of the Mayall 4-meter telescope that he had been using in his research.) This review is based on the Second Edition, which I just recently became aware of.

It's not too much of a stretch to imagine this as a popular-science book aimed at the nonprofessional astronomer who has some familiarity with galactic astronomy and who has the necessary curiosity to follow the concepts and the evidence presented, as well as the reasoning that the author leads the reader through. The mathematical level, unusually for a book actually pitched at the professional astronomy community, is both accessible to the non-expert and not critical to understanding the overall thrust of the concepts being developed. There are any number of other books on astronomy and physics that treat more advanced or narrow concepts despite being written for an informed and intelligent lay audience; this one would not be out of place among them. And several books, e.g. those by Dr James Kaler on stars, on stellar spectra, and on the interstellar medium, are equally narrow and specialized despite explicitly being written for interested non-professionals. Just as Kaler's could migrate upstream into the realm of undergraduates pursuing a degree in astrophysics, so could Keel's thrive in the same realm. For those of us who find the origin and evolution, as well as the broader context, and the "endless forms most beautiful" (thanks, Darwin!) of these multifarious animals of the universe's zoo to be utterly fascinating, "The Road to Galaxy Formation" is one of those rare professional texts that speaks as well to the keen amateur.
