A Brave New World

The last three years have been exciting times for architects and developers. Microsoft, in the spring of 2000, first announced a vision for computing termed Next Generation Windows Services (NGWS), which in February of 2002 materialized as Visual Studio .NET (VS .NET) and the Microsoft Windows .NET Framework. These products brought object-oriented programming to the world of Web development and helped mainstream the paradigm of connected applications using XML Web Services.

However, it could be argued that the biggest boon for developers working with Microsoft development tools such as Visual Basic 6.0 (VB), Visual Interdev, Active Server Pages (ASP), and Visual C++ was that the introduction of the .NET Framework unified the programming model. Now, developers could use a common Integrated Development Environment (IDE), core languages, and tools and reap the benefits of rapid application development (RAD) programming inherent in VB, Web server applications with ASP, and powerful object-oriented development with Visual C++. This unification created opportunities for developers to extend their skills into new application areas by leveraging a core set of class libraries tied to a runtime engine and development environment.

Fast-forward a little more than a year. Microsoft has now built on the foundation laid by v1.0 of the Windows .NET Framework by releasing v1.1 and Visual Studio .NET 2003. In this release not only has Microsoft consolidated features released after the initial release to manufacturing (RTM), including ADO.NET Data Providers for ODBC and Oracle, Visual J#, and ASP.NET Mobile Controls--formerly the Microsoft Mobile Internet Toolkit (MMIT)--it has further expanded the reach of developers by including the Compact Framework and Smart Device Projects (SDP). These two together allow developers familiar with the desktop Framework to use the same core languages (VB and C#), runtime engine, and IDE to create applications targeted to smart devices, such as the Pocket PC 2002.

But with this increased opportunity come additional challenges for architects and developers. The key is to understand not only the nuts and bolts of the technology, but how and in what scenarios to apply it when building solutions. This is the reason we wrote this book, and we hope the reason you've decided to read it. That is also why we strive in each section to provide the big picture in order to give you enough technical information to understand the challenges and techniques that can be used, while not getting bogged down in every last detail of implementation. For this reason, you'll notice that we rely heavily on short code snippets, listings, and pointers to other resources.

A Note about Audience

As mentioned in the previous section, we've written this book with architects, technical managers, and developers working in the corporate world in mind. Because these three roles often have a large diversity of skill sets, there may be parts of the discussion that are too detailed for some readers. If you find this to be the case, we urge you to rely on the executive summaries at the beginning of each chapter, which summarize key chapter points. We also recommend looking for the key point icons in the margins. These icons indicate special considerations or, as the name implies, key points that we don't want you to miss.

For other readers the code snippets and listings may leave you wanting more. This is good and done by design; for this reason at the end of each chapter we've included a "Related Reading" section that discusses chapter topics in greater depth. Because some of the entries in the "Related Reading" sections necessarily refer to Web sites, keep in mind that links may change, and you may need to search for the article title, rather than using the address provided. For your convenience, we've placed the links on our site at http://atomic.quilogy.com/cfbook and will do our best to keep them updated.

When considering the skill sets of developers and technical managers reading this book, we specifically had in mind (1) desktop Framework developers and managers who are now embarking on building smart device solutions, and (2) embedded VB developers who are now moving from eMbedded Visual Basic 3.0 (eVB) to the Compact Framework. As you can imagine, the needs of these two groups are inverse to one another. The former require little in the way of managed code and Visual Studio guidance, but more coverage of issues related to developing for mobile devices. The latter are already familiar with building solutions that include mobility but require information on Compact Framework specifics. Because satisfying both audiences is difficult, we've tried to walk a line that balances the two views without leaning too heavily in either direction.

Language Choice

One of the great benefits of working with the .NET Framework is the freedom to work in the language of your choice. This is an inherent benefit of working with code that is compiled first to an intermediate language and then finally to machine code at runtime.

Although the Compact Framework restricts this freedom somewhat through its support for either C# or VB .NET, applications written in either are functionally equivalent and on a par in terms of performance. And as with the desktop Framework, the class libraries that ship with the Compact Framework are the truly interesting part of the product because they encapsulate the functionality that developers will use. All the class libraries are accessible from either language, and so, learning what they have to offer, rather than language-specific syntax, is the key to building both desktop and Compact Framework applications.

For these reasons you'll notice that we included code snippets and listings in one of the two languages (not both, although rest assured that it is possible to translate any C# code to VB .NET and vice versa), although VB .NET is used more frequently to reflect the likelihood that a majority of eVB developers will choose to use VB .NET over C# because of its similarity to the syntax they are familiar with.

The Scope of This Book

This book is organized into three parts: The PDA Development Landscape with the Compact Framework, Essential Architectural Concepts, and Additional Programming Considerations. Each of the parts varies in length, with Part II, which describes the central architectures for handling data, being the largest and consisting of four key topics in five chapters.

The PDA Development Landscape with the Compact Framework

The first part of this book consists of Chapters 1 and 2 and lays the foundation for architecting solutions using the Compact Framework. The goals of these chapters are to put the Compact Framework in the context of mobility (Chapter 1) and to explicate the architecture and core features (Chapter 2) of the Compact Framework and SDP.

Together these chapters are written so that architects and developers will gain an understanding of how the Compact Framework is positioned and why you might want to develop solutions using this technology.

Essential Architectural Concepts

The part on architectural concepts is broken into four key topics that architects and developers typically need to address in their solutions:

  • Local data handling. Business solutions that are written using the Compact Framework will typically need to be able to handle relational, file-based, and XML data in order to display it to the user. Chapter 3 addresses this need by discussing how applications can access local data using the support in the Compact Framework for processing XML, reading and writing to files, and using ADO.NET. The techniques in this chapter apply to handling disconnected data, as well as data downloaded from a remote source.
  • Remote data access (RDA). Business solutions also have the need for accessing data over the Internet or on corporate networks. Chapter 4 addresses this requirement by discussing various architectures for accessing remote data including XML Web Services, sending HTTP requests, low-level networking using sockets and infrared standards developed by the Infrared Data Association (IrDA), and accessing Microsoft SQL Server 2000 remotely. The techniques in this chapter apply to connected scenarios.
  • Robust data caching. Chapter 5 discusses how applications can cache data locally on a device using SQL Server 2000 Windows CE Edition 2.0 (SQLCE 2.0). Most of the discussion will focus on the uses for and features of SQLCE 2.0 because it has many advantages over simply caching data through the use of files.
  • Synchronization. Finally, Chapters 6 and 7 discuss ways in which data can be synchronized, including a discussion of simple synchronization with a host PC using ActiveSync (Chapter 6) and following with the RDA and merge replication features of SQLCE 2.0.
  • Of course, all of these topics reflect the centrality of data access. This is no coincidence, because architecting and developing business solutions involve, in large measure, moving data around, editing it, saving it, and synchronizing it. As a result, in our discussion of the third and fourth concepts mentioned here, we focus considerably on SQLCE 2.0 and how it can be used with the Compact Framework.

This book does not address architecting solutions using Microsoft ASP.NET Mobile Controls (formerly MMIT)--a set of ASP.NET server controls that enables the development of Web applications for a variety of mobile devices--because there are other good resources already available and because the kinds of applications developed with Mobile Controls are fundamentally different from those developed with the .NET Compact Framework.

    Additional Programming Considerations

The third part of the book consists of three topics that most mobile solutions will need to address: localization, security, deployment, and developer challenges.

Chapter 8 addresses how Compact Framework applications can be architected to adapt to devices running in different geographies. Chapter 9 is dedicated to the various techniques for securing both the device on which the Compact Framework code runs as well as its data. Chapter 10 discusses techniques for deploying Compact Framework solutions. Finally, the book concludes with a single chapter that discusses some of the challenges developers will face when building solutions with the Compact Framework. Many of these challenges relate to implementing features that are not directly supported by the Compact Framework or that are somewhat difficult to grasp at first.

    Final Words

In addition to our consulting and teaching activities, we write technical articles (including some on the Compact Framework) for our Web site at http://atomic.quilogy.com. We encourage you to check out the site and hope you'll use it as a technical resource.

In the end our hope is that you will feel the time and money invested in this book have been worth it because you have taken away important concepts and techniques that you can apply as you build great solutions using the Compact Framework. If you have questions or comments, please feel free to e-mail us at atomic@quilogy.com.

Great book for technical managers, not for developers
    By Daniel Moth
This is a well written book with a nice overall structure and easy-to-follow language. Each discussion starts with an executive summary and ends with references to other resources for further reading, thus making it a very straightforward read. I will not enumerate the subjects covered, since you can do that by looking at the contents table.
Although the title tells us this is a .NETcf book, you should pay attention to the subtitle, as the topics of architecture and general advice on mobile development are also covered at considerable length. This may or may not please you, depending on your role. For example, the chapter on security includes general theoretical principles on the topic but omits examples of using the Cryptography API. We notice this in other parts of the book, and in fact the first chapter is a pure retrospection into the history of mobile devices as supported by Microsoft. Add to my previous comments that the book is only 350 pages long and the fact that there are no complete/end-to-end code examples, and you can see why it is not aimed at programmers. To be fair, the authors don't hide this and they state in their preface that the target audiences are technical managers and architects.
Like anything that goes to print, there are some errors including: the recommendation of using ResEditor (it simply does not work with the CF); the suggestion that C# is 100% compatible between desktop and compact frameworks (what about `volatile'?); and the claim that the class loader ignores the build & revision number (or that for private assemblies the version number is not consulted), which is not true. Overall, though, the content is correct and for technical managers this is probably the best book on the subject (but certainly not for developers). Finally, a small note that there is no mention of SmartPhone 2003 since the writing must have been completed prior to its launch (or indeed prior to CE 4.2).

Two Heavy Hitters write a great book
    By William G. Ryan
As an avid Compact Framework enthusiast, I buy every book on the CF that I can find. As you may be aware, there aren't a whole lot of them out there, but they are all really good. This one is no exception. If you do much with .NET, then you probably know these authors already, and they lived up to their reputations with this one!
Why would you want this book? Well, most importantly it really explains the Why's of Compact Framework development. There really are a lot of considerations and while the CF is very similar to the full framework, there are a lot of differences. As a developer, this book thoroughly explains what you are getting into and how to avoid many common mistakes. However, even if you are a non-technical person this book will prove to be a great asset if you are involved in decision making. After all, who wouldn't want a mobile presence for their company? Well, like everything else, it comes with some strings attached. In most instances they are trivial compared to what you get. In others they may not be. Architectural considerations are critical because you are dealing with limited battery life, smaller processors and memory and reduced real estate. It's also a lot easier to lose a PDA than it is a desktop and since many of the advantages of using Handhelds are only realized when you have wireless access, issues like bandwidth and security can make or break any mobile initiative.
I think the best part of this book is its theoretical focus. It's very easy to run off and start coding, forgetting architectural concerns. In these instances, many find that getting a great little app that works great in a test environment isn't so good once you get it into production. This book can help you minimize the chances of that happening. Furthermore, it gives you a very sober perspective on what you will need to deal with. Due to the fact that the CF has only been commercially released for under a year, and PDA development hasn't been a practical reality for more that a few years, there just isnt' that much literature out there. And this book's focus on architectural issues and HOW TO Deal with them effectively will prove how hip the authors really are.
I've been really impressed with the recent direction of AW and they've been pumping out some really great titles. Couple a good publisher with some really informed and talented writers and you have a winner. Undoubtedly, this book is a winner.

A great book that will help you on your next mobile project
    By Rob Tiffany
The Fox and Box dynamic duo have created a wonderful book that really explains how to be sucessful with your Compact Framework projects. The chapter on Localization saved me a lot of time when needing to make a large-scale Compact Framework application world-ready for a current client. This chapter alone is worth the price of the book. Go get it!

Equality of Opportunity, by John E. Roemer

John Roemer points out that there are two views of equality of opportunity that are widely held today. The first, which he calls the nondiscrimination principle, states that in the competition for positions in society, individuals should be judged only on attributes relevant to the performance of the duties of the position in question. Attributes such as race or sex should not be taken into account. The second states that society should do what it can to level the playing field among persons who compete for positions, especially during their formative years, so that all those who have the relevant potential attributes can be considered.

Common to both positions is that at some point the principle of equal opportunity holds individuals accountable for achievements of particular objectives, whether they be education, employment, health, or income. Roemer argues that there is consequently a "before" and an "after" in the notion of equality of opportunity: before the competition starts, opportunities must be equalized, by social intervention if need be; but after it begins, individuals are on their own. The different views of equal opportunity should be judged according to where they place the starting gate which separates "before" from "after." Roemer works out in a precise way how to determine the location of the starting gate in the different views.

    Review
Roemer's combination of the techniques of economics and philosophy throws down a challenge to those in both disciplines. He believes he has sorted out equal opportunity, to leave us only with questions of personal responsibility and efficiency. A dash of political science may rein in what we can make of his account, but Equality of Opportunity is a very important work of metaphysical welfare economics. (Keith Dowding Times Higher Education Supplement)

Articulates a level-playing-field view of equal opportunity. Proposes that the equal-opportunity policy must equalize, in an average sense, the educational achievements of all types of people but not equalize the achievements within types, which differ according to effort. (Journal of Economic Literature)

Roemer argues that there is consequently a "before" and an "after" in the notion of equality of opportunity: before the competition starts, opportunities must be equalized, by social intervention if need be; but after it begins, individuals are on their own. The different views of equal opportunity should be judged according to where they place the starting gate that separates "before" from "after". Roemer works out in a precise way how to determine the location of the starting gate in the different views.

The Promise of a Pencil INTRODUCTION
On a sunny autumn afternoon just before my twenty-fifth birthday, I walked into a large bank in my hometown. At the time, I had everything I thought would make me happy—the job, the apartment, the life. My closet was full of impressive corporate clothing, and my business card carried the name of a prestigious company that garnered respect in every room I entered. I looked like a guy on the right path who was most likely walking into the bank to deposit his monthly paycheck.

But deep down inside, I was no longer enamored with the life I’d created. The only purpose I was serving was self-interest. While I rarely showed it to outsiders, my happiness waned day after day. A restless voice kept me up at night, telling me that until I found meaning, the money wouldn’t matter. It told me that I’d find far more fulfillment if I measured my life in purpose, not profits. And that I didn’t have to keep waiting, that now was the perfect moment to start chasing my biggest dreams.

It’s strange how you can sometimes feel a yearning that seems bigger than your actual body. That’s how I felt that day. I wanted to be a part of something that extended far beyond my two hands and the possessions they could hold. No matter how scared I was of getting off my safe path, I needed to see what would happen if I finally stepped into the uncharted territory where unbridled ambition and opportunity reside.

The scariest part was that I wasn’t some successful businessman who’d built and sold companies. I didn’t have a lengthy career to prove I would succeed. Nor did I have millions of dollars in financial backing. I was just a regular guy with $25 who wanted to prove that regardless of age, status, or location, every person has the capacity to change the world. So I used that small amount to open a new account in hopes of one day building a school. Everything that came after was a result of that first step. That leap of faith rippled outward, spanning cultures and continents.

Since then I’ve immersed myself in the field of global education. I believe that where you start in life should not dictate where you finish. And that no tool can more profoundly unlock a person’s ability to change his or her place in life than access to quality education. The good news is that we have the ability to provide quality education to every child on earth right now. We are not looking for a miracle vaccine or drilling for a hidden resource that may not exist. We have all the tools necessary at this very moment. Yet we still have 57 million children out of school, and millions more who sit in classrooms each day but remain illiterate.

Education is a complex issue, which requires a complex set of solutions. There is no silver-bullet answer to educating the children of the world, but the global education crisis remains the single most solvable and important human rights issue of our time. The knowledge that it can be solved gives me hope and purpose. But no individual can solve the world’s problems alone. A collective effort is required, and we each have a unique role to play.

    ***

This is the story about what happens when you acknowledge that there’s more for you to become, and that you don’t have to have enormous resources to make a difference in the world. It’s a story about what can unfold when inspiration strikes and you realize that the rewards of living a purposeful life are rich and lasting. It’s the story of my life (although I have changed the names of several people at their request), but it’s a story that can belong to anyone.

Each of the thirty chapters in this book is titled with a mantra. These mantras have served as my guideposts as I’ve faced decisions both large and small. They have become my essential truths. I’ve written them with the hope that they will be carried forward, shared with others, and adopted in ways that help you on your own journey as well. Each story stands on its own, but taken together they create a roadmap that I hope will enable you to turn your own dreams into reality.

If one of these stories ignites something within you, listen to that restless feeling that your head may tell you to ignore but your heart will tell you to pursue. The biggest difference between the person who lives his or her dreams and the person who aspires is the decision to convert that first spark of motivation into immediate action. Take the first small step, then chase the footprints you aspire to leave behind. Every person has a revolution beating within his or her chest. I hope that this book helps you find yours.

    Terrific and Inspiring Storytelling
    By Dave Kerpen
This book is both a terrific story and a guide to making a difference in the world. Inspiring, thought-provoking, and deeply meaningful - Promise of a Pencil profoundly resonated with me and it will resonate with you.

Any one of the chapters - organized as stories telling 30 "mantras" - would be worth the price of the entire book- but together, well- this is a masterpiece, and a future textbook in how we can all make a difference in our short times on this planet. Two enormous likeable thumbs up!

The book is perfect for all ages in the sense that if you are a young person, it will inspire you to dream big dreams and pursue them with a relentless and undivided attention. If you are older, this book restores your hope in the current generation that is doing so much good in the world.

After reading this book, not only do I feel like I CAN do anything, I also feel like I WANT to go do EVERYTHING! Great Read!

I wish it had been more about Pencils and less about Braun
    By TheBoom
This is going to be hard for many people to understand but once upon a time everything wasn't about ME! I think Braun has done a lo of good through this organization. However, I gave up halfway through because I just got tired that everything was about him. I wish more focus could have been on the kids, the parents and the other volunteers.

    Review
"The 6th edition continues to be solid in content regarding using systematic observation to understand and evaluate children's behavior and learning. I consider the included tables as the continued strength of the book. These tables describe milestones in child development in all domains. The tables are not only informative themselves, but they are very appropriate in the Overview part to fit the "guide" nature of the book." - Wenju Shen Ed.D, Valdosta State University, Georgia

"I believe that the 6th edition has new material that will be helpful. When I teach this course for the spring semester 2007, I plan to implement the Florence case studies and the practical exercises. Further, the in-depth discussions on the observation methods are useful for focus point study with students when needed." - Beverlyn Cain, Ed.D, Elizabeth City State University, North Carolina

"I really like the way that Bentzen has added more examples of observations within each chapter and how he has made more comparisons across methods in each chapter as well. I also like the addition of "Florence's thinking" throughout various chapters." - Tisha Bennett Sanders, Ed.D., Vanderbilt University, Tennessee

    Great Resource
    By D. Murtha
As a teacher of small children and a trainer, I use and teach observation skills all the time. I found this book to be very thorough.
It covers everything from an introduction to growth & development, general guidlines for observing children, and recording methods for children from birth to age 8. This book also includes many examples and charts. It makes a great addition to a teacher or childcare workers bookshelf.

VERY Detailed Look At Assessing Young Children
    By Reginald Williams
Even though I would suggest Sue Wortham's ASSESSMENT IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION or McAffee/Leong's ASSESSING AND GUIDING YOUNG CHILDREN'S DEVELOPMENT AND LEARNING as primary resources for this topic, Bentzen's book offers much value in its very detailed nature if used properly. If used improperly, it may overwhelm a student of early childhood professionalism.

Taking a developmentally appropriate perspective, the text is focused around observation. After decent assessment introductory and child development chapters, it jumps right into setting the foundation of assessment singularly around observation. The next nine chapter then detail different recording methods and approaches (i.e. anecdotal records, checklists, time sampling, etc.). In an intriguing change of pass, the books final several chapters detail observing children by developmental level (i.e newborn, infant, young child, and mulitple stages of school age children). This is a rare approach to assessment with developmental details that you may not find from your typical assessment text.

To be frank, I use observation as my primary assessment method with my children. Unfortunately, though, it is this very monomial devotion to observation that makes Bentzen's book limited, for early childhood assessment is more than observation. It's writing samples, self portraits, parent interviews, and other authentic techniques. To ignore those topics, and just focus on observation breaks a general pedagogical piece of advice many early childhood professionals are given: always use several different assessment techniques.

In the end, this extremely valuable resource is just that: an expert resource on professionally and thoroughly observing young children (not necessarily early childhood assessemtn) albeit a VERY GOOD resource that may be worth purchasing.

I'll say up front: This was a tough book to rate. However, upon reflection and a careful re-reading of the introductory matter, I decided on full marks. Mr. Lewis makes no pretense this is a textbook, and I'm sure it wouldn't suffice in that role. Rather, "100 Statistical Tests in R" provides a solid reference, with many worked examples, on inference procedures that many scientists and researchers need. Usually they need them without all the theoretical trappings, and that's where this book excels: "Just the tests, ma'am."

The presentation is spare and clean, with solid literature research. The R code appears to be up to date (at time of release, anyway), and package references are valid. An amazingly wide range of examples is shown, from communicating with whales to stock trading, game theory to medical applications.

My concerns are not with the quality of the test procedures or the code. I tried quite a few of the procedures, and found them to be functional and clear. The organization of the tests into groups covering correlation/causation, hypothesis testing, independence, and more is useful, and clearly shown early in the volume. I especially enjoy having more than one option even within a single test.

I am always a bit worried about efforts to enable sophisticated analyses and inference without sufficient context or support for the less-sophisticated researcher, who is tempted to use the procedure as a "black box" and then believe they know enough to decide and act. Many of these tests are like carving an object with a supremely sharp knife; if you're not a master carver you can lose some skin, or perhaps a finger. For those who need these tests but haven't serious grounding in their foibles, I strongly recommend developing a relationship with a practicing statistician and seeking guidance.

These concerns do not reduce the usefulness of this presentation of statistical tests. The author makes no claims about one's ability to correctly infer in a particular situation. His guidance is otherwise.

If you're looking for a listing of the mathematical equations for all these tests, you'll need to look elsewhere. However, if you're in a technical, research or development setting and use R (or have access to R coders to help), I heartily recommend this book to you.

    Just do it.

Exactly what it says. If you know what test you want the book tells you how to do it in R. Very clear expanation with examples. Output explained, including stored output.

    A Handy Desk Reference Guide
    By Aaron J. Wallach
This is a very good list of statistical tests. It provides some basic application and usage examples and then an example of how to run the test in R.

I would suggest you have a solid understanding of statistics before purchasing as you will both have to know what you're looking for and the underlying concepts behind them; this is not "Statistics in R for Dummies". A knowledge of R is not required, but should of course be reccomended...

You get a lot more than the $3 price tag out of this, if you know how to use it....

    Emotional Rollercoaster
    By NuJoi
I was tired when I finished the book. It was one of those where I had to stay up one night to finish it because when I tried to put it down, the story kept turning over in my head. I had an honest like and dislike for some of the characters. I do have to admit that part of me kept wondering what else could go wrong as the story progressed.

The most striking thing about this book was that it is the first time that I, as an African-American, could feel the effects of discrimination against another people. The author is able to really make you feel what the characters feel. Additional kudos goes to the author for illustrating how dangerous it is to see things from only one point of view. Ever story has at least two sides.

Aside from wondering how much more hardship could possibly befall the family, I found the book to be an excellent read. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants a challenging read.

Fascinating Novel of Sisterhood and Assimilation
    By Global Prof
This book had many strengths, which I appreciated a lot:
    * Wonderful description of dynamics between two sisters over time
    * Great historical depiction of life in Shanghai before WWII, and the Japanese invasion
    * Wonderful historical details about what the Chinese experienced at Angel Island in SF, and the discrimination they faced once in the US
    * Terrific depiction of the stresses of assimilation

There were some things that led me not to give this five stars, however:
    * The end of the book (last 20% or so) had a lot more telling than showing, except for the last scenes which were terrific. This caused it to drag.
    * I found myself skimming, because of this "telling" aspect of the prose.
    * In places, I felt that whole sections could have been cut to streamline the story. This included a lot of the time in Los Angeles, which dragged a bit.
    * I got the sense that many things were inserted because they were important to the author from her own childhood memories, or stories from her parents, rather than because they were crucial to the story. In particular, details about LA's old and new Chinatowns fell into this category. It was sort of like the author couldn't help herself, or couldn't let go, of things that were actually nonessential -- the various historical characters in Chinatown, the appearances of movie stars, etc. I felt See needed to show more self-discipline as a writer.
    * After having loved the author's previous book, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, I expected an almost perfect novel, and was perhaps more harsh on her than normal because of this.

    Shanghai Girls: Great read
    By bettyann
It was a wonderful, well written story that was very informative of life for Chinese in China and as immigrants to America. You could clearly see that Lisa See did a lot of research in writing this story to present the reader with facts of that time period from the 1930's thru the 50s. It was a story of the love between two sisters and how their separate lives tore them apart but never completely.

Scaling Lean: Mastering the Key Metrics for Startup Growth, by Ash Maurya

Is your “big idea” worth pursuing? What if you could test your business model earlier in the process—before you’ve expended valuable time and resources?

You’ve talked to customers. You’ve identified problems that need solving, and maybe even built a minimum viable product. But now there’s a second bridge to cross. How do you tell whether your idea represents a viable business? Do you really have to go through the whole cycle of development, failure, iteration, tweak, repeat?

Scaling Lean offers an invaluable blueprint for modeling startup success. You’ll learn the essential metrics that measure the output of a working business model, give you the pulse of your company, communicate its health to investors, and enable you to make precise interventions when things go wrong. You’ll also learn how to:

    · ballpark the viability of a business model using a simple five-minute back-of-the-envelope estimation.
    · stop using current revenue as a measure of progress (it forces you to fly blind and, often, to overpromise to your shareholders) and instead embrace the metric of traction—which helps you identify the leading indicators for future business model growth.
    · set progressive goals that set you up for exponential long-term success by implementing a staged 10X rollout strategy, like one employed by Facebook and Tesla.
    · stop burying your breakthrough insights in failed experiments, but rather illuminate them using two-week LEAN sprints to quickly source, rank, and test ideas.

Ash Maurya, a serial entrepreneur and author of the startup cult classic Running Lean, pairs real-world examples of startups like Airbnb and Hubspot with techniques from the manufacturing world in this tactical handbook for scaling with maximum efficiency and efficacy. This is vital reading for any startup founder graduating from the incubator stage.

Benefit from Ash Maurya's experience get your project to scale.
    By Ken F
I run a number of lean startup seminars, primarily in the Colorado area, ones that cover the inception->product stage and ones that cover the "how to incubate new ideas in an existing enterprise". Lately the bulk of these have been based on Ash's Lean Canvas, a model that in my opinion exposes risk and next steps more effectively than Alex Osterwalder's BMC (also a great tool).

The big issue that comes up after companies run their initial tests and get a first working model is "what next" -- or more specifically, how do maintain the pace of innovation my organization requires after the initial excitement period, and how do I create an organization that supports this pace?

Ash's approach in Scaling Lean gives you ways to find your answers to several questions:
-- How do I know if I have traction? Specifically, how do I use real-world, non-vanity metrics to know what's working.
-- How do I know where my bottlenecks and contraints are? Specifically, what can I do to identify and make progress given the realities of my current situation?
-- How do I run effective experiments? What should I be testing, and what should I test first, based on my company's business model, size, etc.
-- Where should I focus? How do I add up all the above to know where to spent the limited resources (time, money, and people) I've got?

Scaling Lean answers these questions in an effective and concise way, or at least gives you the tools to be able to find the path to answering them yourself (which is what lean startup is all about). It's relatively short, and not filled with too many anecdotes- the real-world examples are well chosen and not just filler (like so many business books).

Finally! Someone Finally Taught Me How to Set Goals the Right Way...
    By leviticus8908
For many years I struggled with setting goals--not just in business but in my personal life as well. I would agonize over trying to pick the right target and make the right plan only to change my goal almost immediately after confronting a painful dose of reality or even just finding new information.

My frustration with goal setting led me to adopt a "no goals" approach. I would only focus on the process and just "do the best that I could." This was better than trying to define the perfect goal but it still had a major shortcoming: I had no idea how to prioritize this idea over that. The "process-only" approach was good for developing my skills but not for "counting the costs." Sometimes I would execute projects very skillfully but they were doomed to go nowhere from the start.

Ash's solution is brilliant. He teaches you how to use the "Fermi Estimation" and "orders of magnitude" to quickly ballpark your idea and then work backwords to determine what inputs you need to get there. Immediately after doing the exercise you'll know which ideas are clearly not worth pursuing.

If you struggle with estimating revenue targets and timelines, you definitely need to read this book.

The Fermi Estimation is a method Ash teaches early in this book on how to create ballpark goals based on "orders of magnitude"

If the bible was a graphic porn novel on how to scale a business.
    By Christopher G. Erckert
I bought the hardcover under the advice of others that the layout was a substantial part of the value. I would also agree, but if lugging a physical book keeps you from reading it, get the kindle edition, then buy the hardcover for reference at home.

In short, if you are responsible for a companies' growth, advise others on the topic, are thinking about jumping into your own biz or someone else's THIS IS REQUIRED READING. In fact, it is 1 of 2 books that I would put in the top 5 all time resources in print or the internet on the subject. The other is Running Lean by the same author and should be read first.
