FIVE STARS FOR PAPERBACK - KINDLE: um...

The Kindle Edition makes the book half as useful by failing to present sheet music excerpts clearly. They are the very subject of the book, and they cannot be read.

I have treasured this volume over all others on the subject, but I wanted it on Kindle so I wouldn't tear my third copy to pieces as I did the first two. I can't really use it in Kindle edition, although the lilt of Wilder's prose certainly seems to survive the transition.

What Makes A Good Song?

"American Popular Song" is a "technical" review of most of the known songwriters of this period and their songs. Alec Wilder himself is a part of this group. I say "technical" because all of the songs that are considered are broken down as to their form, their harmonic attributes, and what makes the subject song worthy of note.
Because of the "technical" aspect I believe this book would attract serious lovers of music of this period who want to delve deeper into "What makes a particular song a "hit" and why.

About the Author

Nicholas Maxwell received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. Before entering into his consulting career Dr. Maxwell taught Statistics, Decision Sciences, and Psychology at the Bothell Campus of the University of Washington. In addition to this text Dr. Maxwell has written for several scholarly journals including The Journal of Statistics Education.

The Best Basic Statistics Book That I've Seen!!!

I've not seen a better basic statistics text. Mr. Maxwell gives clear, non-technical explanations in the context of real-world examples. His illustrations and examples come from today's news. This helps the beginner grasp the concepts faster. And adds excitement and interest for the new student. In spite of its non-technical approach, this book nails the concepts dead-on. This book is a boon for students who get mired in the more traditional text. My congratulations to author Nicholas Maxwell.

Excellent background introduction to the Gulf Arabian area.

Looking for Dilmun is based on the first extensive archaeological investigations conducted along the southwest coast of the Arabian Gulf over a 12 year period from 1953. Its main strength is that it is not just a report on research findings of the expeditions. The book also presents a simple introduction to archaeology mixed with an explanation of the discovery of an unknown civilisation. It is easy to read and written in a style that conveys the character of the expeditions, the trials and troubles as well as the successes and more humorous moments. Now, some thirty years on, the book has also captured an excellent picture of life in the Gulf Arabian region both before and during the oil revenue led development which has taken place over the last 40 years. I would recommend the book to anyone who is living in the Gulf region, intends to visit or live in the region or who wishes to understand more about a part of the world which is often misunderstood through the lens of a television news camera

Discovering Dilmun

Geoffrey Bibby was a British archaeologist working for a Danish museum and was one of the first professional archaeologist to explore the Persian Gulf region post WW2 (1947 on...). This resulted largely from a previous job working for one of the oil companies in the Gulf where he made initial contacts. The book itself was published back in 1970 after he'd been working on digs there almost yearly for the previus 23 years. In this period, he and the largely Danish archaeological team surveyed the Gulf region, starting with Bahrein and gradually extending into Oman, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. In the course of these surveys and digs thet discovered the remains of an early civilization contemporary with Sumer and with trading links to both Sumer and the Harrappa (Indus Valley) city states.

The book itself is a non-technical and enjoyable to read account of the archaeological digs conducted, the gradual evolution of knowledge about Dilmun and some hypothesis about the sites and their historical significance. You won't find the detail that you get in peer journals and publications, the book itself was written over 35 years ago and consequently the information is now somewhat dated, but you do get a fascinating account of the digs and some of the discoveries, particularly of the grave-mounds of Bahrain. Bibby does assume that the reader has some familiarity with the history of Summer and the Harrappa civilization, but he does explain where necessary and he introduces some fascinating titbits and surmises.

It's an easy to read, hard to put down book and it also does a good job of illustrating what it was like doing archaeological digs in the Gulf region prior to the influx of oil wealth - as well as portraying the Gulf Arab culture and way of life. There are very few books published on Dilmun, if it's a subject you are interested in this is a "must read".

A personal account of the dig on Bahrain

Geoffrey Bibby was one of the first explorers of Bahrain and the first modern archaeologist to dig there. He and his partner advanced far beyond the handful of predecessors who had surveyed the island previously and discovered the remains of a Sumerian civilization there. There is still much debate over some Bibby's findings in peer journals but what can be agreed on is that the civilization of Bahrain extends back into remote antiquity.
Rather than giving away more details of the book I will finish by stating that Bibby's account is a non-technical reading of his achaeological dig at the mysterious grave-mounds of Bahrain. The only thing he assumes that the reader knows is a general history of the ancient near east and he takes time to explain the finer details when they are relevant. Overall an easy read, especially if you're interested in ancient near eastern history.

Nickolas Haydock is a professor of English at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez. In addition to movie medievalism and film, he also writes about medieval Scots literature.

E.L. Risden is a professor of English at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin. He has published books and essays on medieval and Renaissance studies as well as poetry and fiction.

An Important Contribution to Cultural History

Nickolas Haydock and E. L. Risden’s Beowulf on Film: Adaptations and Variations is a cutting analysis of the various film adaptations of the ancient play. The book is a thorough and exhaustive effort by the two scholars that leaves no stone unturned. Haydock and Risden work as a tag team, alternating chapters and subjects and allowing the book to avoid becoming over focused on one topic to the detriment of others. The book is primarily written for literature and film experts, relying heavily on theories of both and continually returning to the grammar of each, though Haydock and Risden do a good job of explaining these terms and concepts as they arise. My biggest concern is the overreliance on Freudian theory, which modern psychology has moved past. Though Freud represents an important place in the history of psychology, his theories were very based on their time and to apply them to history is problematic at best. Despite this qualm, Beowulf on Film represents an important book in the ever-expanding field of cultural history.

This was NOT what I expected it would be.

I really can't express how disappointed I was with this book. I got it because I assumed it would be a thorough comparison with the poem and the various film versions. I expected critiquing, I expected highlights, I expected to be introduced to other people's opinions and to experience versions of Beowulf I'd never heard of before, and I was looking forward to all of that. I didn't expect to have the plots or certain scenes of each movie recited to me over and over again to the point where I practically knew each one by heart without ever having to see them. I didn't expect to have the Lord of the Rings drilled into my head (though the book promises it won't do this) as a version of Beowulf. I wanted so much and what I got out of it was mostly that the authors were tired of what Hollywood was making of their favorite epic poem and decided they would whine and complain about everything instead of just writing their own version and sending it out to a studio. You actually get the opening part of said unwritten movie at the end of the book, which was a huge relief to me because I spent most of the book grumbling, "Get to the point and tell us how you'd do it, already. That's all you really care about."

The whole thing comes across as two people who wrote essays and decided they could make money off of it by selling the essay collection as a book. My main hypothesis for this comes from the constant repetition of movie subjects and plots, as if we hadn't just been introduced to the movie or scene in the previous pages. This cashing in on what everyone wants to read about is exactly what they accuse Hollywood of doing, by the way. They also use the image from the most popular, biggest money earner for the cover, even though it's the version the authors seem to hate the most. Why? Because that image is going to sell more books.

A little more conversation and comparison would have been nice... Or maybe... Any at all. Even a smattering of honest, unbiased comparison would have been better than what came out about each movie. Though there were some observations of traditional versus modern heroism and how various dragons were portrayed as the Other, that's about as far as it came to being something worth reading and I really had to struggle to get to the end, because by the time I'd hit the middle it felt as if I had already read the entire book and was rereading it again and again. I WAS impressed that television versions and episodes of television shows (Star Trek: Voyager and Xena) were included for a short time as a part of "Beowulf on Film." Those versions are usually ignored all together, even by English teachers.

I honestly can't say that I would recommend this book to many people, except maybe fans of Lord of the Rings, who will probably get a huge kick out of their favorite author being mentioned so often and having his works referenced frequently. I can only suggest that if you want to compare visual representations of Beowulf to the actual text, you sit down and watch them yourself. If you have already seen them, you won't want to pick this book up, because it will bombard you with their descriptions until you are desperate for release.

Note: Though this book was a free gift from the author, the content of my review was in no way influenced by the gifting. The book speaks for itself and my review would have been worded just this way even if I'd gone out and bought it. (This book also needs a good check from an editor, who seemed to stop doing their job halfway through my copy, but that could be a result of this being an early release review. Other versions might be properly edited, or my copy could be defective in some way.)

Perfect for Students

This book is a textbook-style critique on films related to Beowulf. It's a bit wordy at times, but the work does offer some interesting insights. I have seen most of the movies analyzed in the collection and the authors do provide some decent arguments; however, some Beowulf films praised just aren't that good. Not that the writers had much choice. An excellent source for college students!
