St. Jerome (347-420) has been considered the pre-eminent scriptural commentator among the Latin Church Fathers. His Commentary on Matthew, written in 398 and profoundly influential in the West, appears here for the first time in English translation. Jerome covers the entire text of Matthew's gospel by means of brief explanatory comments that clarify the text literally and historically. Although he himself resided in Palestine for forty years, Jerome often relies on Origen and Josephus for local information and traditions. His stated aim is to offer a streamlined and concise exegesis that avoids excessive spiritual interpretation.

Jerome depends on the works of a series of antecedent commentators, both Greek and Latin, the most important of whom is Origen, yet he avoids the extremes in Origen's allegorical interpretations. His polemic against theological opponents is a prominent thrust of his exegetical comments. The Arians, the Gnostics, and the Helvidians are among his most important targets. Against Arius, Jerome stresses that the Son did not lack omniscience. Against Marcion and Mani, Jerome holds that Jesus was a real human being, with flesh and bones, and that men become sons of God by their own free choice, not by the nature with which they are born. Against Helvidius, Jerome defends the perpetual virginity of Mary.

In this commentary, Jerome calls attention to the activity of the Trinity as a principal unifying theme of the Gospel of Matthew. He also stresses that exertions are necessary for the Christian to attain eternal salvation; that free will is a reality; that human beings cooperate with divine grace; and that it is possible to obtain merit during the earthly life.

Wonderful

A man who would be travelling over water requested Jerome for some reading material while he travelled and thus we have Jerome's commentary on Matthew. This was dictated in a mere two weeks! An amazing feat!

Jerome does not comment on every verse, of course thats his prerogative, so don't expect to find Jerome's thought on every verse. Such jumps are typically like from 9:6 to 9:9 or 1:12 to 1:16, I'm not faulting Jerome, but letting the potential buyer know that this does not go into every verse. It is still a full commentary on Matthew of course. Some verses are dealt with quickly some are given quite long treatment.

Jerome's treatment of narrative is piercing and imaginative, while his treatment of parables is indeed something special.

I recommend this masterful commentary.

Excellent!

St. Jerome is one of the finest Bible scholars of all time, and this commentary on the Gospel of St. Matthew is wonderful. The commentary itself is layed out very well and easy to follow. And as usual St. Jerome does a great job interpreting the Gospel, fairly concise and very satisfying in his explanations.

SystemC from a software perspective

I have been working as an firmware engineer for many years. As a new advernture, I am involved in investigating various algorithm modeling technique which can provide a good performance for firmware development. Obvioously, SystemC is a good candidate because of its ability to do transaction level based modelling. The question is how to pick up the language. First I tried the technical reference manual and white papers provided by the official system C website. It is quite an eye-openning experience but I think I need more. So I went to Amazon to see what was avaliable. I came across this book and the "System C Primer" book. I bought both.

The major difference between these two books is in the author's perspective. The author in this book approaches from a software background. He visualizes the whole systemC environment as a multi-threaded kernel. To learn the language is to become familiar with the different "API's" and "system calls". It is great for engineers who come from a fw/sw background. However, for engineers coming from the hw background, this book does not spend much time covering the topic on how to write SystemC model that is close to the hardware implementation (RTL or gates). They will be disappointed if this is their goal. I would recommend them to try the other book.

After saying that, I believe the safest bet probably is to get both books so you can have a full spectrum of knowledge of what the language can do for you. Then you will not get stuck knowing only one aspect of the language and you can decide which "hat" to wear according to your need.

Complete but overly complicated, needs editing

This is a good book on SystemC, but it is not a good book for beginners. The book is overly complicated and provides levels of detail in its examples that are unnecessary to make the point or teach the subject.

For example, when discussing ports the book says the following:

DEFINITION: A SystemC interface is an abstract class that inherits from sc_interface and provides only pure virtual declarations of methods referenced by SystemC channels and ports. No implements or data are provided in a SystemC interface.

DEFINITION: A SystemC channel is a class that implements one or more SystemC interface classes and inherits from either sc_channel or sc_prim_channel. A channel implements all the methods of the inherited interface classes.

DEFINITION: A SystemC port is a class templated with and inheriting from a SystemC interface. Ports allow access of channels across module boundaries.

Huh?

This line of teaching led me into the bowels of SystemC and was unnecessary as a start. One can just say, "A port allows communication between blocks. Let's look at sc_in and sc_out to start".

I needed to get another book to recover from this instruction.

The examples in the book are generally OK and there is a website that has executable versions. Unfortunately, there needed to be more careful editing in the examples. The HelloWorld example has an obvious syntax error (an undeclared module is instantiated) and would never have run if it had been compiled.

I could not find the video mixer example that they used to teach ports on the web, and thus couldn't make progress.

Overall, this is a good book if you know SystemC and are interested in the details of how it is implemented. I would use it to learn the language, and it cannot act as a language reference guide.

This is the best beginning SystemC book out there

Before this book had come out, there were only a couple SystemC books available, and after reading them both, I still had no real grasp of how to write a basic program in SystemC. This book basically connected all the dots for me, and I was able to start writing a testbench in SystemC. For the best beginner's regimen, read this book cover-to-cover a couple times and get the "SystemC Golden Reference Guide" by Doulos for use as a syntax reference when you are actually writing your code.

I drove my new Mercedes "Brand" to the public library "non-brand" so my daughter could get some books. I saw this and was intrigued. After reading three quarters of it I couldn't continue. It's like a 20 year old male who reads Men's Health and has to dedicate his life to living the "healthy way" by forgoing life itself.

Nice read, good perspective, but a bit incomplete.

I really enjoyed this book and all of the potential it had. It brought up a lot of interesting thoughts and perspectives that had me evaluating my own role working with brands. There were some nice case studies and vignettes, while some others that just seemed to drop off without making a complete point. Also the definition of "unbrandables" seemed contradictory at times. I would consider St�ssy a text book example of a strong brand—authentic—but a very successful brand in any traditional ways.

Great guide that doubles as an art book for Uncharted fans

I'm a huge fan of Collector's Edition guides and this one doesn't disappoint. With how amazing a game Uncharted 4 is, it was hard to not pick this up. There's a lot of detail included as far as maps and strategies go. I love treasure hunting in Uncharted games and it's a huge help to follow the guide to make sure I get everything.

The free digital eguide comes in handy a lot too! I use both hardcover and eguide equally.

Even if you're the type to think "bah, I could find all this information for free on the webz", I'd still recommend it because it's also great as an art book of sorts.

The silver pirate coin was a great bonus gift as well. I pre-ordered the game at Best Buy and got the gold pirate coin. It's awesome having both colors of such swag for an awesome game.

Discover the Secret's of Avery's Treasure

It's pretty hard to screw up an Uncharted guide. Most of the time they're fairly simple in nature and fairly easy to follow because the games aren't exactly complicated games in anyway. The last few guides I've gotten my hands on by Prima have been questionable in some way simply because a lot of them are concerned about helping you learn and understand the game... but not really mastering them. For some games this approach is not a good one for a strategy guide (say... Dark Souls III) but for other guides it can work just enough that it's actually okay. Uncharted falls into that category. The layout is fairly similar to Bradygames guide for "The Last of Us." It's actually a pretty good guide that will help you learn the game and with Uncharted that's really all you need.

The guide begins, as most do, with the basics. And considering how many new and unique features Uncharted 4 introduces, it's a pretty good thing that the guide is willing to go into a lot of these basics, even noting how much some things have actually changed. As I said before, Uncharted isn't exactly a complicated game, but the guide does make sure to help those get acquainted to the systems and mechanics of Uncharted fairly well. If you're new to Uncharted then this is a good place to start. It does talk about some of the differences between difficulty settings but the guide is specifically written for those going through moderate difficulty. I'd be less bothered by this if the guide did not also note how extreme some of the differences between Moderate and the game's highest difficulty really are. We'll come back to this point. For now it's just safe to say the guide doesn't do a bad job introducing Uncharted.

It's not long before we dive into the walkthrough and I actually think it's a fairly good one. Each area opens with maps and details. Although the prose sometimes waste time telling me what's going on in the story as opposed to just pressing forward, it doesn't do it too often. Previous Uncharted games have been a little sloppy with maps. The Bradygames guides had the maps drawn like treasure maps, making them difficult to use at times while Piggyback only opted to give you maps in combat situations. None of those guides were bad, per se, but the maps here make you wish that a guide had done them this way before. The maps here are absolutely gorgeous, with diagrams that show you were to go with certain points marked on the map and called out in the walkthrough. They are absolutely stunning. If there's a climbing or platforming section, there are arrows to show you where to go and what route to take. It makes it that you can use the guide as much or as little as possible. The walkthrough also points out where various treasures are. In combat and other scenarios it also points out where guns and weapons are. Another good thing about the guide is that it points out where and when you should've received a trophy. If you're the kind of person that likes to collect trophies this guide will help.

Once we get beyond the walkthrough to the extras this is where the guide can hit a few snags. It points out everything you need to collect and when, but it doesn't spend a lot of time detailing the unlockables. This can be a bit annoying. In Piggyback's Uncharted 3 guide one of the things I appreciated was a small addendum that helped master some of the more troubling parts of the "Crushing" difficulty setting. Here it mentions differences but in some of the more challenging firefights or situations that are actually extremely different the guide doesn't mention anything. It's also not really a good sign that the game hardly mentions anything about the unlockables at all or other secrets. They're not called out or anything.

There is almost nothing mentioned here about multiplayer. There are basics but they put no maps, no coverage or anything of the sort. It's largely ignored. You'll learn the basics of the multiplayer, sure, but you won't see anything about the multiplayer maps or anything like that. If anything this isn't actually that big of a deal, but the effort in and of itself would've been appreciated. Previous guides made sure to point out things like where potential hotzones were or how to navigate the terrain of multiplayer maps. They were nothing special either, but having maps and pointing out certain things on those maps for those hoping to improve their multiplayer game isn't actually a bad thing in and of itself.

All that said, though, the Uncharted 4 guide is actually not bad at all. The walkthrough alone and how detailed it is and how much information there is in it more than makes up for any shortcomings the strategy guide may have otherwise. It's a great walkthrough. And even though it isn't written for higher difficulty settings, at least basic umbrella differences between difficulty levels are called out. So if you do need help with Uncharted 4's main story it's a really good guide to utilize.

My last experience with Prima Games guide was Xenoblade Chronicles X which was pretty awful so I was hesitant to buy this one. However this one was quite good and restored some faith in Prima Games. Uncharted is pretty straightforward so the guide wasn't really necessary to complete the game but is very detailed with a ton of maps for each area as well as showing the various paths you can take. Also the text isn't just limited to direction but is littered with a bunch of fun tidbits or explanations on events.

I used the guide mainly for collecting treasures I missed and it was extremely helpful in that regard. The main maps show what treasures are located in the area and each treasure has a small box with more detailed instructions on getting the treasure. A couple were worded confusingly but overall was clear.

The quality of the book itself is very good. The colors are nice and the cover is very sturdy. The bonus coin is also very nice looking and is larger than I imagined.
