Studying for the Concert exam in Emergency Medicine. I've bought every emergency medicine prep or question book on the market. This is by far the best single source I have found.

Silly questions with silly answers, the questions does not duplicate the actual test. I don't recommend this book. I strongly recommend 1200s questions in emergency medicine.

I used it for a recert exam. The CD didn't have anything on it but one 275 question test. I found the format dense and clunky.

Sonnenberg follows her harrowing memoir of her dysfunctional mother, Her Last Death (2008), with this equally frank assessment of female friendships. Perhaps because she suffered so much neglect at her mother’s hands, Sonnenberg looked to her female friends to provide recognition and nurturing at each of the key stages in her life. In grade school and college, as a newlywed and then a young mother, and during her parents’ deaths, she avidly sought out sustenance from her friends to carry her through. Self indulgent Cry for Help

Given the fantastic reviews this book received, I was ultimately disappointed. On the positive end, Sonnenberg has a way with words, and every once in a while she captures a moment or turn of phrase that is memorable. However, the individual stories of each of the failed female friendships are told in a superficial and overly predictable fashion, showcasing a confused sexuality and sense of self. The disjointed presentation creates a confusing timeline, and other than the fact that Sonnenberg cannot understand why each of these relationships stop working, it becomes tedious and depressing. While I admire Sonnenberg for her courage in exposing the more vulnerable aspects of her life, I had a hard time finishing the book, and was left with the hope that if even 50% of the facts of the stories are true, that the author is getting therapy.

Examine women and friendships

At times this book was self indulgent and I thought to myself how shallow the relationships seemed. As I read further I discovered her relationships changed, some for the better, some for the worse. My opinion changed and I found many of the friendships very relatable. It made me stop and examine the women in my life and how they ' matter'. Women and friendships are often complicated. The author stripped hers bare so we can see inside a woman's soul during different stages of her life. It's interesting too that her satisfaction and appreciation changes as she matures or has life experiences to measure their significance by.

I would recommend this book to women of all ages who want to explore the importance of our friendships and relationships.

I've long thought about the nature of women's friendships,and am always seeking new insight that can help me understand my own friendships better, both the failed ones and those that endure. So I was excited when I saw this book advertised in The New Yorker. The book disappointed me though, maybe because the author's own challenges seemed more in the spotlight than the dynamics of her encounters and relationships. Alas, Sonnenberg's oeuvre was a start, but I find myself still waiting for that great book on women's friendships.

Good, but not by itself

I've used this journal for three weeks now, in conjunction with the Mayo Clinic Diet book. It is very closely keyed to the diet outlined in the main book and is not much use without that (with one big exception, under "Pros" below). It contains no information about the diet itself - you'll need the book for that.

Pros: 1. It does exactly follow the outlined two weeks "Lose It!" and eight weeks "Live It!" plan of the main book, with charts and tables that make it easy to track how you are doing with the diet, habit changes, and physical activity recommendations.
2. It has review pages at the end of the first two weeks and each week thereafter that enable you to evaluate your progress frequently.
3. The most useful feature is a graphic on each day's pages for the "Live It!" section that allows you to track your consumption of food from each category in the diet by simply checking off circles in a pyramid-shaped graph, that also visually reminds you of the diet's emphasis on vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. This is the easiest way I have ever seen of tracking so-called "exchanges" and this feature would also be very helpful to a diabetic trying to track a prescribed exchange-based diet for the first time. The line-by-line entries for the food log in the "Live It!" section have columns for each exchange as well, showing you item by item what you're eating. This is my favorite thing about the journal.

Cons: 1. It only has ten weeks worth of entries, and two weeks of those are for the initial very restricted "Lose It!" program, without the helpful tracking graphics for the exchanges. For many people, it's going to take longer, sometimes a lot longer, than ten weeks to reach a weight loss goal.
2. The initial two week period has limited space for recording food eaten, forcing simplification or even just leaving out some things - which defeats the purpose of a food journal.
3. There are some recipes included during the eight week detailed section, but, very puzzlingly, they simply list the recipe without telling you the number of portions it makes! Some are clearly one portion recipes while others are at least four, maybe even six or eight. While it's possible to figure out what a portion would be, a diet journal that tries to help you track what you eat should certainly give number of portions in its recipes.
4. The binding opens easily but can't be turned back on itself, so it's a bit annoying to use. You can lay it flat, but you can't fold it around, and for many of the pages that would have helped.

This does help you follow the diet plan recommended in the main book, but if you buy it, realize that you may be able to do about as well tracking things on your own with an inexpensive spiral bound notebook from the dollar store. And if you plan to stay on this diet for a while that's what you'll have to do when this one runs out. Don't plan on photocopying it - like many proprietary, copyrighted journals of this nature, it is printed in green ink that photocopies very poorly, if at all. If you want to simplify your record keeping for the main Mayo Clinic Diet book, this will help you do that - at least for the first ten weeks. But it gives you very little that you couldn't come up with yourself, with the exception of a few recipes that, unfortunately, because of their lack of a listing for number of portions each recipe makes, are more confusing than helpufl.

Takes commitment, a personal coach in a notebook

Personally this journal has made the difference for me between following an eating plan and sticking to an eating plan. I bought it with the Mayo Clinic Diet book and am glad I did. I made the commitment to myself to use the entire journal and am now 2 months into the journal and have lost 10 pounds. As stated by the authors, I lost the majority of my weight the first 2 weeks and it has been a slow but gradual loss since. Probably more gradual because I'm not a severe adherent to the plan, but trying to live within it. For example, I tend to go over the # of recommended servings/day, but because I see on a weekly basis how I trend w/ my # of servings, I find I make an effort to modify my diet to include more veggies and to decrease fats when needed. Also, the 2-week 'lose it' portion of this plan really broke my sugar habit. I hardly ever have sugar these days and find that when I do, I often find things TOO sweet.
Here's what I like about the journal and why I find it more helpful than a blank notebook to keep notes: Each day there are blank spaces to prompt me to write my goal and thoughts on how the day went. There are well designed columns for recording servings each day, as well as a daily space for exercise. There is a motivational tip each day and they have nudged my decisions when I have read them. The weekly synopsis is a nice way for me to see what I've decided over the week, to see what's worked and what hasn't. I think of this journal as a personal nutritional coach who nudges me but doesn't annoy me.
What I haven't used - the weekly meal planner. This could be handy if used, but nope, I'm not THAT obsessive.
What I don't like - the green printing is difficult for me to read easily (I'm in the stage of needing reading glasses). Okay, so they don't want people to photocopy the pages, but come on Mayo, think about everyone with less than stellar eyesight! Doesn't meet accessibility standards for reading, that's for sure.
I like a deal, so I scoured the used books to find one of these w/out writing in it. Not easy, but it is possible.
Lastly - I intend to lose another 10# so am going to buy a second journal and stick with thiis till I get to my target. I am starting to experiment w/ not recording on some days to see how that goes. After all, I don't plan to do the recording forever.

I purchased the Mayo Clinic Diet Journal with a large dose of skepticism, thinking it was mostly a marketing scam that could easily be replaced by a spiral notebook & pencil. However, I'd promised my family & my physician that I'd give 100% of my effort to lowering my cholesterol & getting out of the "pre-diabetic" category. So along with the Mayo Clinic Diet Book, I also ordered the New Mayo Clinic Cookbook and the Mayo Clinic Diet Journal... and I'm very glad I did. Here's why:
If you think of the Mayo Clinic Diet Book as the primary text for a course, then the Mayo Clinic Diet Journal is its daily "workbook" of homework assignments. The journal contains thoughtfully coordinated activities, questions, tasks and tips that reinforce the material covered in the Diet Book. Great trilogy!

Having started the series with a library book, I had to buy this one because the waiting list at the library was too long. I'm glad I didn't wait; it was worth the purchase price to continue the story of the witch Diana and vampire Matthew. It has everything the first novel had plus time travel, and begins immediately where the first novel left the reader - as Diana and Matthew begin their journey back in time.

Harkness successfully continues the characters' story and immerses the reader in Elizabethan England. The reader is introduced to many famous historical figures from both the political and artistic communities. Fans of timey wimey stuff (that is a Dr. Who reference, by the way) will get their fill in both this novel and the conclusion of the trilogy...what alters timelines, when do characters meet in the past and what happens to their present day selves as a result of those meetings? In addition, the romance continues, as do the fantasy aspects of witches, vampires, and alchemy. Add in suspense of the race to find the mysterious book, and what that book will reveal about all of the different creatures who inhabit this world, and you have a novel you will stay up to finish. And yes, you will want to get the 3rd one and finish the series.

Warning! This review contains minor spoilers for the first book in the All Souls Trilogy, A Discovery of Witches.

Shadow of Night is one of those books that is very hard for me to review. I really enjoyed it, but there is so much to talk about with the historical details, the large cast of intriguing characters, and the overall experience that I don't want to overdo the gushing. The last time readers saw historian and witch, Diana Bishop, and her vampire husband, Matthew, they were off on a journey to 16th century England. The reason for this time travel adventure is to find a witch to help Diana learn about her unique powers and to find clues to the location of the missing manuscript, Ashmole 782.

Like with A Discovery of Witches, Diana and Matthew are the center of the book and they pretty much control the success of the story. Thankfully, both of them are interesting characters who are a great combination of likable and flawed. They each have their own journeys to complete and do so with a unique spin. I will admit that I had a few issues with Matthew's overbearing nature and Diana's recklessness, but these instances were rare and they did always learn from their mistakes. The romance (while not the main storyline) is interesting and fun. These two may have declared their love for each other in the first book, but it becomes obvious that their relationship is still new and continues to grow.

Most of the book takes place in the 16th century which is a fun difference than the first book. Readers get to meet a ton of historical figures and see them interact with Diana and Matthew. Some of my particular favorites were Christopher Marlowe, Edward Kelly, Emperor Rudolf II, Mary Sidney, and, of course, Queen Elizabeth I. Diana and Matthew travel from England to his father's keep in France and even to the Holy Roman Empire. I am a history geek so this was an absolute blast for me. I also enjoyed the introduction of Matthew's nephew, Gallowglass, and that we finally got to meet Matthew's father, Philippe. Some of the book does take place in the present-day with Ysabeau, Marcus, and others finding hints of the time travel in the current time which was interesting.

As I mentioned, there is a lot going on in this book and I don't want to give much more to avoid major spoilers. I will say that it takes some time to get used to the writing style and readers do have to go through quite a bit of detail, but the story is so well-crafted that it is worth the time and effort. I also will say that this would not make a good stand-alone story due to the worldbuilding and character development. I was impressed though with how easy it was to slip back into the series after going more than a year between books. I highly recommend this series and can't wait to see how it ends with The Book of Life which was just released this month.

A Middling Middle to Harkness' Trilogy

There is a lot to like about this sequel to A Discovery of Witches. Harkness, like Connie Willis arnd Hilary Mantel, does an excellent job of recreating an historical era, in this case the Elizabethan, and of integrating her protagonists, Diana and Matthew, into that world. Some of the characters are truly memorable, particularly Matthew's father Philippe and Kit Marlowe. Harkness adds a lot to her richly imagined mythology of vampires and witches, particularly witches, as we learn that Diana is a weaver, one of the witches who creates spells. Unfortunately, very little actually happens in this very long book and while we get a rich sense of the sights, sounds and smells of the time, we don't get a real sense of how people lived and thought. The killings of witches in Scotland are alluded to, but how much richer the book would have been if Diana had been separated from Matthew and forced to take shelter with those women. There was a real opportunity to explore the era of witch burning in England that was sadly missed. And I can't be the only one tired of the subplot of willfully obtuse 21st century Diana trying to understand her moody, tortured centuries old husband. Harkness needs to stop channeling Emily Bronte and Matthew needs to stop clutching his roguish curls, beating his manly breast and develop a more humorous approach to life. I would think that living forever would enable you to develop some bemused detachment toward life, but apparently not. This was a very long book, beautifully described if somewhat wordy and academic. I am interested in the third book but it is at the bottom of my "to read" virtual stack and I am not inclined to move it up.

Great edition of an old book, interesting read, great info, read it with a grain salt

This is a really good book by the father of electricity. He was a very good explainer although some words or expressions may be unfamiliar due to the age difference. This book is a great read but should be read with grain of salt, you have to be aware that the stuff in this book is more than 100 years old, many of the chapters are plain obsolete, and many of the techniques, theories and materials were not invented or discovered back then so you shouldnt take literally everything this book says. However most of the core information of the book hasnt changed over the last 100 years, Steinmetz who first described magnetic hysteresis, makes a very fine job explaining it in this book, most of the book is focused on the magnetic effects of materials, hystereresis and its impact on electric circuits, this book should provide a solid foundation on magnetic hysteresis, complemented with a more modern book which approaches new materials and techniques.

As for the edition of this book, I must say it is great, no missing words, formulas or images, the paper quality is quite good, relatively thick yellowish paper, also the print quality is quite good. I've seen complete editorial disasters with these old Steinmetz books, in which pages will be missing, or graphs and formulas will be chopped off, etc.. this is not the case with this book, this one is very clean, I wish the quality of the other Steinmetz books could be as good as this one.

Keil received his B.S. in Biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1973, an M.A. in Psychology from Stanford University in 1975, and a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania in 1977. He was a faculty member in the Department of Psychology at Cornell University from 1977 to 1998 and has been at Yale since 1998. For over 35 years, he has taught an undergraduate lecture course in developmental psychology as well as advanced seminars at the undergraduate and graduate levels on topics in cognitive development and cognition. Keil has published extensively on topics concerned with many areas in the development of cognition and language. He has written two books on aspects of conceptual development, and he and Robert Wilson have edited the MIT Encyclopedia of the Cognitive Sciences, which was selected as the Outstanding Book in Psychology by the Association of American Publishers. Keil has served as president of the Society for Philosophy and Psychology and has received numerous awards for his scholarship, including the Boyd R. McCandless Award from the American Psychological Association (Developmental Psychology), the Distinguished Scientific Award for an Early Career Contribution to Psychology from the American Psychological Association, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a fellowship at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, a MERIT Award from the National Institutes of Health, and the Ann L. Brown Award for Excellence in Developmental Research. Keil has served on the Board on Science Education for the National Academy of Sciences, the McDonnell Foundation Advisory Board on Brain and Cognition, and numerous other boards and committees for government agencies and foundations. He also served as Master of Morse College at Yale University from 2001-2012. His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. Keil, and his wife Kristi Lockhart, a clinical and developmental psychologist, are parents of three sons who are now in their twenties and thirties.

The book to read if you want to understand how children develop

I was given this book as a gift and found it to be amazing. It is a beautifully written and illustrated journey into the minds of children. I've actually read it twice and will forever use it as a reference.
