Fearless

Dalilah marries Blake Nottingham to save him from wrecking Luke's career. Nottingham who is a billionaire can destroy Luke with just one word. After Luke's art show he comes home to find Dalilah on his couch, but he throws her out. He's still hurt from their break up but no matter how much he loves her she still married Nottingham and he just found out. A few hours later Dalilah is back at Luke's this time all bruised up. Luke doesn't turn her away this time he's ready to fight for her and to find out the real reason she married that sick man. They will have to fight for their relationship every step of the way because getting rid of Nottingham is not easy and not their only problem.

This book frustrated me. I recommend it because book one and book three are great and this one connects them. I try not to give away anything in any review I write, so I will say the two main characters, especially the female continued to make stupid decisions and that annoys me. She is a prodigy, extremely brilliant, speaks 5 languages fluently, supremely beautiful with a billionaire father and she cant make one single logical decision.

Iffy Situation Still Great

I love the characters. However, I find it impossible to believe that Delilah wouldn't get help from her parents. They're rich and influential too, so at times her situation seems somewhat forced and implausible to me. Despite that, I do love these characters and very much want to read the rest of the story.

About the Author
Alan J. Marcus is a Professor of Finance in the Wallace E. Carroll School of Management at Boston College. His main research interests are in derivatives and securities markets. He is co-author (with Zvi Bodie and Alex Kane) of the texts Investments and Essentials of Investments. Professor Marcus has served as a research fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Professor Marcus also spent two years at Freddie Mac, where he helped to develop mortgage pricing and credit risk models. He currently serves on the Research Foundation Advisory Board of the CFA Institute.

Professor of finance and economics at the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies at the University of California, San Diego. He has been visiting professor at the Faculty of Economics, University of Tokyo; Graduate School of Business, Harvard; Kennedy School of Government, Harvard; and research associate, National Bureau of Economic Research. An author of many articles in finance and management journals, Professor Kane’s research is mainly in corporate finance, portfolio management, and capital markets, most recently in the measurement of market volatility and pricing of options.

Zvi Bodie is professor of finance and economics at Boston University School of Management. He holds a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has served on the finance faculty at Harvard Business School and MIT’s Sloan School of Management. Professor Bodie has published widely on pension finance and investment strategy in leading professional journals. His books include Worry-Free Investing: A safe Approach to Achieving your Lifetime Financial Goals and Foundations of Pension Finance. Professor Bodie is managing director of Integrated Finance Limited, a specialized investment bank and financial engineering company. He is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Pension Research Council.

Not much of a description on many solutions. Just provides answers. Not much help.
Also the paper quality is REALLY REALLY cheap. You can see thru the next page's text and that's really annoying especially if you try to take notes or use highlighter. Bleeds thru the pages behind. So horrible!

Worth the purchase

The solutions are pretty limited in steps to solution, so you will need to know the basics to understand some of the assumed steps to completion. Overall, I am glad I had it to help confirm the final answers from the problems. I would recommend purchase if you will not have another source for the answers.

Very helpful for most problems but there are some where an answer is provided but no feedback on how that answer was achieved. Most everything has the detail but there are some that don't that is why this doesn't get 5 stars.

About the Author
Brett L. Walker is Regents Professor and Michael P. Malone Professor of History at Montana State University, Bozeman. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2013 for his work on global environmental history. He studies environmental history, the history of human health, and the history of science, particularly as they relate to Japan. He investigates how nature has imposed its way onto the human past, as well as how humans have sliced, burned, extracted and engineered their needs and desires onto Earth and its living organisms. He is the author of The Conquest of Ainu Lands: Ecology and Culture in Japanese Expansion, 1590-1800, The Lost Wolves of Japan, and Toxic Archipelago: A History of Industrial Disease in Japan. Recently, he co-edited Japan at Nature's Edge: The Environmental Context of a Global Power.

No first time read of Japanese history is going to be easy; it's a great deal of new and dense information. Walker does an acceptable job of presenting the basics but his early 21st century politically correct off hand editorializing on many issues is distracting and unnecessary.

(Viking, 1974), which won the Horn Book Award. McGovern spent part of her career at Scholastic, where she created the See-Saw Book Club. McGovern lives in New York City.

Wonderful book

This book was very informative and helps the young reader to know what it would have been like to live in New York City at the turn of the last century. It touched on the rich and the poor, where they lived, where they worked, how they spent their leisure time, what life was like for the children, what they wore, what they ate, etc. It conveyed a lot of information in an easy, etertaining style. The illustrations are lovely. My kids all enjoyed it, from my second grader to my high schoolers, although the intended audience is probably about kindergarten through sixth grade.

Too much hate for rich people

Before reading to your children, I recommend that you sit down with your children and explain that rich people are not mean like they are portrayed to be in this book. I'm not rich, but I don't despise people that have more money than me, and I recognize the good things they do. It does a lot of comparison of what it was like to be rich and poor in that era, but there is definitely a negative connotation (really more like hate) towards the rich. Since we already purchased it, we simply read it and omitted the more hateful comments. I recommend finding another book.

About the Author
Ron Vernon is Emeritus Professor of Geology at Macquarie University and an honorary Research Professor at the University of Southern California. He has taught undergraduate and graduate courses and short courses in Australia, the US, Italy, Germany, Finland and México, and authored several books, including two others with Cambridge University Press: Beneath Our Feet (2000) and A Practical Guide to Rock Microstructure (2004). He was an editor of the Journal of Metamorphic Geology for 18 years.

Geoffrey clarke is a Professor of Geology and the current Head of the School of Geosciences at the University of Sydney, where he has taught geology for over 15 years. Before teaching, he spent three years as a minerals exploration geologist for Esso Exploration and Production. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Metamorphic Geology and an editor for the Journal of Petrology.

Excellent and Balanced

When I first got this book I was overly enthusiastic about thermodynamic models, and felt textbooks emphasizing that approach were superior. However, a sharp eye in the field leads away from the purist approach and more toward the balance presented in this book. The thermodynamic models are not ignored, but discussion of where and how they apply provides better insight than other texts. Similarly, the chapters showing varieties of leucosomes, melanosomes, and migmatite seemed of little value, but are very enlightening in the field where they relate directly to unchanged metamorphic rocks nearby. There are unacknowledged problems and inconsistencies with thermodynamic models such as ignoring volatile and fluid gradients, or presenting results from a silica saturated protolith inclusive of transient minerals that persist only in silica undersaturated cases. The thermodynamics-oriented texts do mention these things, but they tend to be trivialized relative to what is actually the case in the field. Aside from the content of this book being thorough and balanced, it is also quite well written and organized. The trade between figures and descriptive text is also good. The subject of metamorphic petrology is sufficiently complex that all authors must wrestle with methods and order of presentation. This book is quite good on all fronts.

A septuagenarian Israeli novelist who emigrated from Baghdad in 1951, Ballas fictionalizes the life of Ahmad Soussa, an Iraqi Jew who converted to Islam in the 1930s. Soussa ended up writing works used in anti-Jewish propaganda by Saddam Hussein's regime, and Ballas begins during the Iran-Iraq War of the mid-1980s, with his character, Ahmad Haroun Saussan, writing a memoir (this book) in which he tries to explain why he wrote The Jews in History, an enormous work taken up by the regime. What unfolds is Saussan's life story, the primal scene being his marriage to a non-Jewish American woman, Jane, when he's a visiting engineering grad student in the U.S. in the 1930s. The marriage results in Saussan's elder brother and acting family patriarch, Daniel, disowning Saussan and having him excommunicated from his hometown Jewish enclave at al-Hila. That trauma sets off a chain of events that ruins Saussan's marriage and makes for a too-pat justification for all of his subsequent actions. Ballas also assumes a familiarity with Iraqi history that most American readers won't have, but his writing in Saussan's unreliable voice is immediate, vivid and richly elusive. As a case study in the rationalization of personal and political contradiction, the novel is entirely clear.

Good, but not up to expectations

Perhaps some of the lyrical aspects of the writing has been lost in the translation to English. The book meanders through the life of of Haroun Soussan a Jewish convert to Islam in Iraq. I agree with the previous reviewer that the lack of chapter headings and jumping back in forth in time makes the book difficult to follow - I'd recommend reading it in a single sitting rather than multiple sessions as I did. Someone unfamiliar Iraq over the last 70 years would have difficulty reassembling the historical background. The style does augment the notion that Haroun is a static and lonely character who ages slowly but changes little as the world changes around him.

For me the book centres around the notion of personal identity and its relationship to others. Soussan defines himself as a Muslim and converts on principles of generality because Islam is presented as the alternative that embraces the culture at large and because he fails to connect to his brother Reuben and the Jewish community. In spite of this he concerns himself with Zionism and his life's work is a book "The Jews In History", the focus of which Ballas has unfortunately decided to hide from the reader. Yet his disappointment shows through between his imagined ideals of Islamic community and the reality of political and social life. This comes to the fore in the episodes of the 2 farhuds (progroms) against the Jews of 1941 and 1947 where his uncertainty of how he fits in with both communities and his discomforture that his granddaughter by Hamida his 2nd wife, was given the Jewish name of Sarah and the unexplored question of whether or not Jane, Haroun's first wife, raised his son Jamil as a Jew.

Biographical fiction is not my usual fare and I was motivated to read Outcast through Ballas' appearance in the (excellent) documentary Forget Baghdad. A more precise rating I would give this book is 3.75 stars. I would probably not recommend it to others but it is interesting and discussable.

a good read for you historical/political buffs

Outcast is a political story about the works of Haroun Soussan who is supposed to be based on a historical character Ahmad Soussa. Soussan is a Jewish man who converted to Islam. The story gives in inside look into life in Iraq before the war, leading up to and during Saddam Hussein's reign. Soussan has trouble grappling with the fact that there is a lack of loyalty for Iraq from fellow Jews in his country, and he tries to promote full integration and the revocation of minority privileges. The character appears to be strong in his beliefs and his loyalty to Iraq, causing him to leave his American wife and their two-year-old son behind in America. Here we follow this man's journey as he watches Iraq shift, change and develop, although not into what he'd hoped. Soussan is a civil engineer and, later, an historian.

The book is definitely geared toward an audience who is into Iraqi historical fiction. The book follows no conventional measures, and it is hard to follow at times due the author's tendency to go off into tangents. There are no defined chapters in the book, and the story is told in no distinct chronological order. A good read for you historical/political buffs. Check it out.

This fictional memoir by Israeli writer Shimon Ballas interweaves a broad cast of characters with 70 years of Iraqi political history. Meanwhile it's also a very personal story that centers around three boyhood friends from a village near Karbala - two of them Arab Jews and a third Muslim. While their lives diverge over the decades following WWI, they remain bonded by their love of homeland and their deep desire to devote their lives to what each considers to be its brightest hopes for the future and independence from western colonialism - the control of the British in particular.

Advocating a secular government built on the ideals of an inclusive social order that grants advantages to no one, regardless of ethnic identity, the narrator Soussan finds himself at odds with the aims of Zionism and its aggressive separatism. Believing Islam to be more receptive to his political beliefs, he converts to Islam, alienating himself from his family, the Jewish community, and his old friend, the Jewish poet Assad. When anti-semitism grows in Iraq in the 1940s, Assad joins the 100,000s who leave the country for the new state of Israel. Their other friend, Kassem, becomes an ardent communist, whose life is spent in and out of prisons, finally fleeing into exile in Eastern Europe.

Educated in the U.S. and briefly married to an American, the narrator chooses to return to Iraq, leaving behind wife and son. They do not follow him as he hopes, and after years of a solitary life, working as a civil engineer in Baghdad, he marries again and fathers a daughter, while never ceasing to love his ex-wife. The commitment of his life to his homeland, even to the extent of adopting its religion, leaves him something of an exile in his own country, and there is a degree of melancholy as he remembers a life given to his country at the expense of love and lost friends. Yet Ballas leaves him with an assurance of his own integrity, and not a trace of bitterness or regret. Readers, however, may take less solace in the ending, as it closes just short of Saddam Hussein's war with Iran.

There's a lot of history compressed into this short novel, and the telling of it flows freely back and forth over decades of time. The personal and the political are also intimately interwoven, one always having an impact on the other. References to historical events may send readers to the Internet for background, but the occasional difficulties are well worth the effort to unravel. As the story of Arab Jews is not widely known or understood in the West, it's important to hear their voice. Beautifully translated.

About the Author
A native of Philadelphia, John F. Harbeson (1888–1986) attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied in the Department of Architecture under Paul-Philippe Cret, the great exponent of the Beaux-Arts method. Harbeson passed from gifted pupil to master of design and partner in the Cret firm. As professor of design and, eventually, chair at the University of Pennsylvania, he taught by the Beaux-Arts method and, with the publication of The Study of Architectural Design, became its principal historian.

John Blatteau, AIA, an architect based in Philadelphia, founded John Blatteau Associates, a firm known for its work in the classical tradition. Blateau and his firm have received numerous awards for design excellence: for the Benjamin Franklin Dining Room at the U.S. Department of State; the restoration of the Church of the Gesu at Saint Joseph's Preparatory School in Philadelphia; several branch offices of Riggs Bank in Washington, DC., Virginia, and Maryland; and the Roberson Pavilion for Bayonne Hospital, New Jersey. In addition to his practice, he currently teaches at Drexel University, where he leads a summer study tour to Paris.

Sandra L. Tatman earned her doctorate in art history from the University of Delaware. She has taught at several local universities, including Widener University, University of the Arts, University of Delaware, and Towson University in Maryland. Currently she is executive director of the Athenaeum of Philadelphia, where she was also principal investigator for the Philadelphia Architects and Buildings Project, now expanded to the American Architects and Buildings Program.

One of the most important and enigmatic pieces of modernist art, "Bo�te-en-valise" (Box in a Valise) was assembled by Marcel Duchamp between 1935 and 1941. The portable suitcase contains "the sum of his artistic work" up to that point. Perhaps in premonition of the coming war, and over years without a fixed address, Duchamp reproduced his work in a format that enabled him to easily transport his "complete works" at any time. Though the artist eventually made 300 copies of his box, many are behind glass in museums and private collections.

This is the first ever reinterpretation of the legendary book-object, conceptualized by French artist Mathieu Mercier and now available to a broader audience. At once a work in and of itself, and a reproduction in the Duchampian spirit, this miniature museum contains 69 reproductions of Duchamp's most celebrated creations, including the famous "Fountain," "Nude Descending a Staircase" and the "Large Glass." Mercier has reproduced the bulk of the contents of Duchamp's original box in paper form, designing everything to scale. Playful and accessible, the "Bo�te" reflects Duchamp's desire to display his works outside the museum and gallery system.

Marcel Duchamp (1887–1968) studied painting in Paris. In 1912 he exhibited his controversial "Nude Descending a Staircase," and by 1913 he had abandoned traditional painting and drawing for more experimental forms, including mechanical drawings, studies and notations. In 1914 he introduced his readymades. Duchamp became associated with the Dada movement in Paris and in New York, where he settled permanently in 1942.

Une bo�te formidable!

I've seen a couple of specimens of the real, original Bo�te-en-valise, in a museum and a gallery; obviously I'll never afford one of those, and this is as close as I'll ever get... IMHO production of these boxes for under $200 must have been a labor of love by somebody who can't be making much on them. This Bo�te is not made of deluxe materials, but given that it's all cardboard & plastic, the quality of the reproductions and miniaturizations is excellent, meticulously prepared by someone who knows and cars about Duchamp's work. (That would be M. Mercier, I guess.) If the owner takes good care of it and keeps it in an environment of reasonably-controlled temperature and humidity, IMHO this Bo�te will last a lifetime.

M. Mercier pls take note: having said the above, I still would have been willing to pay a lot more for an edition done in materials close to the original Bo�tes, e.g. a wood & metal box and perhaps some items such as the "Large Glass" done in glass... say, 3 times as much... ;-)

For any scholar of Marcel Duchamp, Mathieu Mercier's "Marcel Duchamp: Bo�te-en-valise (or of Marcel..." is the world's greatest thing! It is more than a book! It is a recreation of history. Some have complained about the quality of the object, but it is a (not) cheap reproduction. Every fault mentioned about this object is stingy myopic criticism. One could not ask for a better facsimile for the suggested retail price! Yes, it is a paper and cardboard reproduction of the1968 version of "Bo�te-en-valise," but to dismiss this object as a "cheap"/"could be better" is very short sighted. This book is FABULOUS--nothing to complain about--and going through it is a transcendental experience! I teach art history and already knew too much about Duchamp, but I was flabbergasted to have learned even more about him through this "book." This "book" that is not a book is sensational. (It does warrant the use of gloves for preservation purposes. When needing to examine it thus, the experience of viewing it is enhanced all the more making it an even better/authentic experience in going through all of its contents--akin to experiencing an original). I give it my highest recommendation!
