Book reviews are meant for reviewing books

I don't even feel very strongly about this book, but they negative reviews by people who clearly haven't read the book is just uncalled for. This book does very clearly address Armenian rebels, actually it addresses it before the book even starts in a prologue. Nothing excuses the crimes perpetrated by the Ottomans, and if the members of the Turkish diaspora truly care, I'd invite them to read this book.

I don't think people who haven't read this book should actually rate it. Anyways, if you do take the time to read it, it really is fantastic, he addresses all the criticisms some very nationalistic Turks have made literally word-by-word. My God, read the book!!!!!

Great book, by one of the all time great human rights international Barrister. If Turkey is not afraid of the truth than allow freedom of speech and information in your country instead of imprisoning those who do speak the truth.

Published in 2007, and hailed by conservatives, libertarians, nationalists and anarchists, Cultural Revolution, Culture War is the book that introduced the concepts of Cultural Marxism and Frankfurt School subversion to the English Right. Single-handedly and within a few weeks, it transformed the language of analysis and action on the British political right.

Gabb’s central thesis is that the British ruling class has, since 1997, turned itself into a totalitarian conspiracy, at war both with liberty and with tradition. It fights this war through the traditional means of state power and state propaganda, but also through its achievement of cultural hegemony. Controlling a single plot line of Eastenders is more important than a thousand editorials in The Guardian.

The only response for non-leftists is to seize control of the State and to shut most of it down. The present ruling class all sucks from the nipple of the State. Stop the flow of milk, and the ruling class with collapse. Once this is done, Gabb sets out a challenging agenda of libertarian minimal statism – for all the usual libertarian reasons, but also because that is the only option at present for conservatives and the various kinds of nationalist.

Now seen as a classic, this book is key to any understanding of rightist discourse in modern England. It is a must-read for activists of all persuasions, for political scientists, and for anyone who wants to understand the world in order to change it.

Understanding Cultural Marxism

Sean Gabb doesn't use the word Cultural Marxism when he details what the ruling class is currently doing to the public, but that's what he's describing. This slim volume gives an excellent picture of a very dark present; one that most people don't realize is happening. I recommend this book to anyone who wonders if all the little indignities the government is constantly cooking up for us are linked together in some way. Gabb has a solution for big government that will bring a smile to your face; cut it in half. If you're fed up with Obama, and big government, this is the book for you.

Good basic recipe for a conservative "alternative" cultural, political, revolution.

I got this yesterday for �2.80 and read it in about 2 hours. I already hold most of the authors views through reading American libertarian literature by people like Laurence Vance, Ron Paul and Conservative Pat Buchanan, as well as Peter Hitchens and various "racist" type stuff though honestly not really being a racist, but not thinking it is a moral issue if you are.
I am a Conservative, Christian, Libertarian and believe in a government with the least power and individuals with the maximum freedom. I don't believe in foreign wars, only defense and I believe there should be no laws for or against any kind of discrimination, free speech, thought, word or deed; on any issue that doesn't break what should be a small, simple, basic, understandable, tough: criminal law.
The author presents the current government (labour or conservative) as the agresive propagator of a false ideology, which dominates through power (state violence) education, media and all the huge, powerful arms of the state.
His revolutionary solution, if a truly conservative government got into power (the conservative party he rightly points out, is just a furtherance of the neo Marxist revolution, under a slightly different guise, but not truly conservative or freedom loving) it would sack about a third of the arms of the state, end the BBC and de-nationalize education, but keep the welfare state and de-corporatize business; among other things. The crown would be an open issue depending upon its use and republicanism would be a viable option.
Where I would disagree with the author would be on his commitment to "secularism". I think he could be a bit na�ve about this and the relationship between Christianity (especially evangelical Protestantism) and individual value, freedom and rights; and the reverse the effect of secular humanist, atheist, agnostic, ideology and the erosion of these things in society, politics and culture.
I still think it is a small book well worth reading by any freedom lovers and should open doors to new ideas and areas of investigation.

Rebello offers a needed defense of this great film.

Believe it or not, the reputation of the film Psycho is not that high among Hitchcock scholars. Most of them prefer the 50s films (Vertigo and Rear Window), or 30s films (The Thirty-Nine Steps and The Lady Vanishes). Reviewers also disliked this film upon its release, although as Rebello notes, that had a lot to do with Hitchcock's unwillingness to let them see it before its release to the public. (He wanted no advance word on its shocking contents.) Psycho has always been a success with its audience, and the viewers are the ones who keep its reputation as one of Hitchcock's greatest films alive. This book starts with the actual serial killer that Robert Bloch based his novel on, proceeds to the optioning of the novel (Bloch had no idea who bought it and sold it for very little, but his reputation was made for life), the preproduction problems (the studio didn't want it made, so it was done as a low-budget quickie), its scripting and filming, postproduction, release, and unexpected success. An irony of the film, according to Rebello, is that Hitchcock never quite got over its success. His later films were seen as letdowns after this one (although I put two of them, The Birds and Marnie, among his 15 best). Anyone who cares about this film will devour this book as I did. I recommend it unequivocally.

As Good As It Gets

I found this book to be just wonderful from start to finish. The research is painstaking, the writing smart and lively, the degree of film industry know-how is evident on every page. In fact, the book strikes me as one of the few I've read on Hollywood to suggest that the writer actually knows his way around movie sets and knows how films get made. This book has none of the absurd (and insulting) armchair psychologizing that mars other Hitchcock books and there isn't a dry or pedantic paragraph in it from start to finish. I thought I knew a lot about Hitchcock and Psycho until I read this book. A job obviously undertaken with love and wisdom, superlatively done by Mr. Rebello. I had the pleasure of hearing the author lecture on Hitchcock on TV in London and in Tokyo and he was the standout of the whole affair!

Behind the scenes of a Hitchcock classic

"A boy's best friend is his mother" - Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins).
"Psycho" is one of Hitchcock's most famous films and this book is a fascinating account of how the film was made and some of the problems that had to be overcome before the film could be completed. Author Stephen Rebello has done an excellent job and describes in detail how Hitchcock chose his screenwriter, his crew and the actors. It is interesting to discover how little some of these people were paid for what turned out to be a classic money making Hitchcock film.
"A man should have a hobby" - Marion Crane (Janet Leigh).
Following the enormous success of his latest film "North by Northwest" Hitchcock was looking for something different - but interesting. When the "Psycho" book by Robert Bloch came to his attention he realised that this could be just what he wanted but he was unsure how the censors would react to the gruesome storyline. He decided to purchase the screen rights to the book and very cleverly did so for a bargain price. The authors agents had no idea who was after the rights to the book and thought they had a good deal when $9,000 was agreed upon. However, after Robert Bloch had paid commission to the publishers, his agents fees and the tax he was left with approx $5,000. It was at this point that he discovered the buyer was a certain Mr Alfred Hitchcock!! Joseph Stefano was hired to write the screenplay after many others had been under consideration. Hitchcock's main concern was to keep the plot twists under wraps during filming and did not release any advance information about the film to the Press. He also had an unusual advertising campaign insisting that no-one was admitted to the theatre once the film had started.
"12 cabins - 12 vacancies" - Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins).
Hitchcock wanted a famous actress for the role of Marion Crane and Lana Turner, Shirley Jones, Hope Lange, Piper Laurie, Martha Hyer and Eva Marie Saint were all considered before the part eventually went to Janet Leigh. Anthony Perkins was the only choice for Norman Bates but several actors were in line to play Sam Loomis (Marion Crane's boy friend). These included Stuart Whitman, Cliff Robertson, Leslie Neilsen, Brian Keith, Jack Lord, Rod Taylor and Robert Loggia. The role of Sam Loomis was played in the film by John Gavin. Alfred Hitchcock's daughter Patricia also had a small role in the film. The music by Bernard Hermann was a major contribution to the success of the film and Hitchcock was so pleased with the result that he doubled the composer's salary. Hermann has written the music for several other Hitchcock films including "The Trouble With Harry", "The Man Who Knew Too Much", "The Wrong Man", "Vertigo", "North by Northwest" and "Marnie".

The book explains how certain scenes were filmed but later disregarded by Hitchcock and deleted from the film as they slowed down the story. Much attention is given to the famous shower murder scene and the controversy that it was Saul Bass who directed this and not Hitchcock. Differing views are given by people who were present at the time but all is revealed here in Stephen Rebello's book. "Psycho" was remade in colour in 1998 by Gus Van Sant. This was an interesting experiment as it was a word for word, scene by scene actual copy of the original. However, it is of course difficult for anyone to top the Hitchcock version.

About the Author

David More is a leading botanical illustrator who has previously illustrated guides on European and North American trees. John White had a long career in the research division of the Forestry Commission before retiring in 1996. He has contributed to many publications on the subject of northern hemisphere trees.

Beautiful book, very informative, enjoyable to read; hardiness ratings are dubious

I really enjoyed reading the book and examining the illustrations. It wasn't clear to me prior to purchase that the illustrations are not photographs, but after reading this book, I rather like the illustrations, as they capture the salient features of the tree bark and leaves in ways photographs might not. The range and anatomy of each tree is methodically described, and many cultivars of each species are described as well, which was a pleasant aspect. This book provides some horticultural advice, which is my principal interest, but no more than you could find with a Google search. For example, there is no information on transplant ease, seed stratification/scarification techniques, or major pests (other than mention of chestnut blight or dutch elm disease). I also found the hardiness ratings difficult to follow, since they are in percentage rather than zone, and furthermore I found some of those hardiness ratings just plain wrong, which was surprising for this second edition printing. For example: Bur Oak and Chinkapin Oak are listed as having "50% hardiness", which translates to -4F according to the table on P18; however, I've had both trees in my yard for years in USDA zone 4b, with regular -25F winter lows resulting in no injury. In fact, Bur Oak is typically rated to zone 3 (-40F). There were several other such examples, all of which served to make me doubt the hardiness accuracy for species I knew nothing about yet was interested in trying in my zone 4b location, such as some of the eastern European oaks. eg. Hungarian Oak was also rated at 50% hardiness (like Bur Oak), but turns out to be hardy only to zone 5 (-20F). Despite the hardiness, I still really enjoyed this book, and regard it as one of the best tree guides of worldwide scope that I've come across.

Destiny Control!

After devouring the contents of this book, my transformation from employee to online entrepreneur begins today! I did not know that there were that many disadvantages to being an employee. The author hits it right on the nail when analyzing the employee mindset versus the mindset of the entrepreneur. The one thing that he said which inspired me to start making the transition is the following: "Employees put their destiny in the hands of others while entrepreneurs control their own destiny". This is so true because how can you control your own destiny as an employee when somebody else is telling you what to do practically every day of your life? You can't because you gave up control for the so called "security" of a paycheck which in itself is an illusion.
The author also discusses how we've been so conditioned by institutions, our parents and society to become employees that in order to become successful entrepreneurs we first have to look at how we've been brainwashed and programmed to believe what we believe. Only then can we begin to eradicate those beliefs that are detrimental and hinder us to becoming successful entrepreneurs. This book is brilliant because it shows you step by step how to eradicate those beliefs and deprogram yourself and lays out an entire blueprint out of the various ways in which you can start a business online and make money.

When I finished this book I definitely felt like I would rather be an entrepreneur than an employee. Interesting information that appears to be well researched. Lots of information about different types of business entities. A very hard-core section about respecting your bottom line and ruthlessly pursuing it! Not exactly full of actionable steps but a worthwhile read if you want to know the real differences between employment and entrepreneurship!

Essential for Lewis Carroll fans

Lewis Carroll was in "real life" Charles Dodgson, lecturer in mathematics at Oxford University and author of books on geometry and logic. Mathematics intrudes into his children's books, especially Sylvie and Bruno. There is nobody better qualified to explain this side of Lewis Carroll to the non-mathematician than Martin Gardner, author of the Annotated Alice and for many years the compiler of the Mathematical Puzzles column in Scientific American. This book will delight Carroll's many fans and may intrigue many who would not normally be attracted to children's fiction. I also recommend the two books on Lewis Carroll's puzzles by Edward Wakeling; as a professional mathematician, he brings a complementary perspective.

We have Martin Gardner to thank for his efforts in explaining about the author everyone knows as the author of what they think is a Children's book.Known as Lewis Carroll,the author's real name was Charles Lutwidge Dobson was a competent mathematician and taught mathematics at Christ Church,Oxford.
He had a strong sense of mathematical beauty and entertained many in expressing this fondness in mathematical games,puzzles,logic, paradoxes,magic tricks,riddles,and every variety of word play,especially word games puns,anagrams,anagrams,and acrostic verse;all published under the name of Lewis Carroll.Two of his best known books,"Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass" are filled ,though somewhat hidden,with puzzles,paradoxes,word play,etc.Words,numbers,games entertained Carroll and those around him throughout his life.
Gardner's book brings all this out to us and shows why he was such an important figure in the world of Mathematical Recreations and as well as other forms of entertainment and games.
One of Carroll's favorite pursuits was what is called Doublets.Most people who like word games of various types will be familiar with these.The object is to take a word such as COLD and by changing one letter at a time,making different words ,ending up with the word WARM.The real challenge is to do this in the least number of steps.Thus we have COLD,CORD,CARD,WARM.--4 steps.This can lead to all kinds of interesting posers.Carroll,actually a skeptic of Darwin's theory,"evolved" MAN from APE in six steps:
APE,ARE,ERE,ERR,EAR,MAR,MAN.
Another interesting poser is to change IRON into LEAD:
IRON,ICON,COIN,CORN,CORD,LORD,LOAD,LEAD.
Another of Carroll's interest was Mazes and we are given a very interesting Maze Carroll created in his early twenties.Another of his puzzles ,called river-crossing puzzles is given.This type of puzzle has been presented by many other puzzlers over the years.

A good reference

This is a nice, thorough handbook that gives just enough detail to allow you easily find something, and in each section lists plenty of references to dig deeper if you want.

The author seems to get the right balance between documenting everything and just pointing out things which may not be obvious or problem spots.

He has a nice format of how things are laid out; it makes sense and is easy to grab for quick lookup. As I am not a mathematician, I appreciate the glossary of math terms related to integration.

Excellent book but is basically a review of what I should know (but forgot or neglected). Didn't cover the category of integration I am interested in though. If you don't have a books dedicated to elementary integration get this; and the price was reasonable.

EXCELLENT guide to Contextual Therapy

As a Master's student in MFT, I have read many articles and books on theory. The New Contextual Therapy is my favorite out of all of them!! Hargrave outlines and explains the theory so well; this is an easy read that really helped me to understand what Contextual is about. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes Contextual Theory.

New look at a classic theory

A good update of how to apply contextual theory to family therapy. I was never attracted to Nagy's theories but this book made it more clear as well as how to apply the theory therapeutically. Gave me a new perspective and interest in Nagy's original work. A very concise volume that gets to the point quickly and clearly.
