About the Author
David More is a leading botanical illustrator who has previously illustrated guides on European and North American trees. John White had a long career in the research division of the Forestry Commission before retiring in 1996. He has contributed to many publications on the subject of northern hemisphere trees.

Beautiful book, very informative, enjoyable to read; hardiness ratings are dubious

I really enjoyed reading the book and examining the illustrations. It wasn't clear to me prior to purchase that the illustrations are not photographs, but after reading this book, I rather like the illustrations, as they capture the salient features of the tree bark and leaves in ways photographs might not. The range and anatomy of each tree is methodically described, and many cultivars of each species are described as well, which was a pleasant aspect. This book provides some horticultural advice, which is my principal interest, but no more than you could find with a Google search. For example, there is no information on transplant ease, seed stratification/scarification techniques, or major pests (other than mention of chestnut blight or dutch elm disease). I also found the hardiness ratings difficult to follow, since they are in percentage rather than zone, and furthermore I found some of those hardiness ratings just plain wrong, which was surprising for this second edition printing. For example: Bur Oak and Chinkapin Oak are listed as having "50% hardiness", which translates to -4F according to the table on P18; however, I've had both trees in my yard for years in USDA zone 4b, with regular -25F winter lows resulting in no injury. In fact, Bur Oak is typically rated to zone 3 (-40F). There were several other such examples, all of which served to make me doubt the hardiness accuracy for species I knew nothing about yet was interested in trying in my zone 4b location, such as some of the eastern European oaks. eg. Hungarian Oak was also rated at 50% hardiness (like Bur Oak), but turns out to be hardy only to zone 5 (-20F). Despite the hardiness, I still really enjoyed this book, and regard it as one of the best tree guides of worldwide scope that I've come across.
