Miami Fun and Break Through for Mia

Another enjoyable read of Mia's road to personal growth and love. Though I found some of the dialogue cheesy and sometimes over the top between Wes and Mia when they were in the middle of their passionate romps. It was still good to see that the two have hash things out and taken things to the next level. The new client Anton turned out to be a good guy even if he came off douche in the beginning. And Heather found a friend in Mia. Lot's of winners in this story but none came away without some bumps and bruises. But that's life. Looking forward to reading August and find out what this cowboy in Texas is all about.

No matter where Mia goes there is always the same person never far in her thoughts.. Wes . With everything that happened to Mia being attacked and trying to figure things out she never wanted Wes to know because she felt like he would think of her as week . Once Mia meet Anton and started working on the video she was hired to do .thongs got a little complicated, thinking she was past the attack every time Anton touched her she was back to the night Aaron attacked her .. Many things come out in this book and they just keep getting better

Audrey Carlan takes a real and up-close look at the affects of PTSD on a character that is so real and personal to me! My heart hurt for Mia and what she was going through while trying to fulfill a commitment for this months client! Once again we see what great things can be accomplished with a little help from your friends and loved ones.

Without giving too much away 2 players from the past (one from a past Calendar Girl and another surprise appearance from a different AC series)come forward in this book and (almost) steal the show!!

Faithful questioning...

J. Gerald Janzen was a professor of mine in Hebrew Scriptures/Old Testament studies. I was fortunate to have classes with him the year before he retired. One of his special studies, and frequent references in class and conversations beyond, was the book of Job. One of the things he told me about putting together this particular volume was particularly insightful into the kind of care and attention he gives to the text. He said that he had compiled all of his notes and references, outlines and preliminary writings for the text, and then put them aside, and wrote from memory. Things he had studied had actually been forgotten from conscious remembering, and had become part of his embedded, subconscious memory of the text. He was both delighted and astonished to realise what he had forgotten that he knew during this writing.
This is a lot like Janzen. In the preface, he talks about the text of this commentary in terms of poetry, in that 'poems are not so much finished as abandoned in despair'. There shouldn't be too much despair in the 'abandoning' of this manuscript -- it is the nature of commentaries that there is always more that can be written, new interpretations to be developed, new facts to be considered. Any text is merely a snapshot of thinking at a particular time; a snapshot of Janzen's thinking about Job at any time is worthwhile.
Janzen follows an atypical format from most the Interpretation series commentaries. The Introduction includes a basic synopsis of the text as well as historical, cultural, and literary/linguistic issues. Unlike some commentators who see Job as somewhat apart from the majority of writing in the Hebrew Scriptures, Janzen sees Job as being part of the centre, the heart of the Bible, particularly at that point in Israel's history where it needed a re-evaluation of its own role in the world, and its covenant relationship with God. With due respect for the dangers of such an approach, Janzen also looks for connections with themes in the New Testament, acknowledging the temptation many Christians have of drawing simple parallels between the crucified Jesus and Job.
Janzen takes the text of Job by pericope (logical sections) and discusses each in turn. He looks at the overall construction of the text with a great deal of understanding of the underlying irony and existential questions posed, by Job, by Job's wife and companions, and even by God. Janzen looks to the structure of the text as essential to its meaning, yet still leaves certain questions for the reader of this commentary (and of Job itself) to answer -- does the meaning contained herein make sense of the text, and does this text, so read, make sense of life? (p. 24)
The bibliography is good but not exhaustive, and alas the commentary has no indexes, which for another author might result in a reduction of rating.
Like the other volumes in the Interpretation series of Biblical commentaries, this text is intended to be useful to preachers and to teachers at various levels of church and school. In that task, this book succeeds nicely, neither being too dry or technical, nor compromising critical analysis or exegesis for 'readability'. Janzen combines accessibility and scholarship here.
No one commentary will ever capture the entirety of any Biblical book. Indeed, rarely will any one commentary contain the whole of even the commentator's own thinking on the text -- such is true with this text and Janzen. However, what is contained within is stimulating and engaging, and is practically essential reading for anyone concerned with Job.

A preacher's commentary

What a joy to use! True to the intent of the "Interpretation" series, this commentary by Gerald Janzen is perfect for the preacher. All the scholarly information you need is there, but integrated with exposition in an interesting way. Basically he treats Job as a classical piece of literature. He weaves discussion of the two questions posed by the book all the way through the commentary: Why do the righteous suffer? Why are the righteous pious?

In a synopsis at the beginning of the commentary he locates Job within the history of Israel's religion; deals with the role of irony in Job; and the lifts up what he considers to be the 'existential questions' raised by the book. They demand of the reader "morally active engagement" with the issues raised by the text.

This is one of the few commentaries I have been tempted to read through from beginning to end. I did a good portion this way and only a lack of time prevented me from finishing. But I did go to the end because I was preaching on 42:1-6 in a couple of weeks' time. Janzen's dealing with the speeches of Yahweh and Job's response in 42:1-2 are worth the price of the book.

It may sound obvious to say that he does not end with answers to the questions posed at the beginning. We are dealing with mystery here! But what becomes clear all the way through, and focused at the end, is that precisely because the text "ends in an indeterminate way" the hearer "is drawn to complete the answer." In brief, are we as readers prepared to accept our status as royal beings, because made in the image of God, though we are made of "dust and ashes"?

Janzen's tranlation of 42:1-6 changes the way the crucial questions are poised. And, unlike most recent commentators, Janzen believes the epilogue is an integral part of the original text. His argument is persuasive on both literary and theological grounds.

If this book is for Dummies, then I need ...

If this book is for Dummies, then I need the one for seriously brain damaged individuals. This book has several instances of listing menu options that do not exist in the software. I would not purchase this book to learn Project 2013. I have a masters degree and have been running a successful business since September of 1999. You be the judge, but I would look elsewhere to learn this software.

I'm about 1/4 way through this, but it is very well-written and organized to get the most from Project. Project, BTW, is not super-simple, but it's superior to all the cool new apps out there if you really want to analyze and optimize projects. No pain, no gain.

Rebecca F. Plante is Associate Professor of Sociology at Ithaca College. She is the editor of two other books on sexualities and genders, and has written on these topics for scholarly journals and the popular press. During her six years covering the Middle East for the Wall Street Journal, Brooks sought to find out how Muslim women feel about their societies' attitudes toward women. What she discovered is sometimes astonishing, sometimes shocking, but always fascinating. Taking on the hijab (the Muslim woman's black veil) herself, Brooks talked with women throughout the Islamic world, reexamined the Koran, spent time with fundamentalist and feminist alike, and emerged with a deeper understanding of the religion as one that once empowered but now cripples women. She found, for instance, that Iran is one of the better Islamic countries for women, Saudi Arabia the worst; that the hijab can be strangely liberating; that enjoyment of their sexuality is an inherent right for Muslim women; and that to be a feminist under Islam calls for a daily form of courage almost incomprehensible to the Western mind. Fundamentalism by any name mistreats women

I am a Lutheran church librarian; I recently bought this book for our library and am very glad I did. American women (and men) need to have a better world view of all religions and cultural customs because we are not islands in this world. This book, with vignettes by many Arab women from desert nomad wives to Queen Noor of Jordan, gives an excellent overview of Muslim women's lives summed up best in the misused Biblical verse, "Women, submit to your husbands." Talk about men shifting the blame to women for their own irresponsibility! This book plaintively showed me how Arabian women live very lonely and often appalling lives based on forced submission to men, physical, mental and spiritual abuse, including female clitoridectomy, stoning, no educational opportunities, limited communication with others and forced limitation on travel. What a waste of 50% of the human potential of these countries. But, you know, I can't think of any fundamentalist group of any religion where women do not suffer the blame: loss of all rights to reproductive freedom, educational and career opportunities. This book is an illustration of what can happen when fundamentalists of any stripe create doubt, fear, exclusion and intolerance amongst the public. Use the minds that God gave you: think, read and ponder what we can do as a society for the good of the world and ALL its people. Stop the exclusion. Stop the blame and the hate. Women are not the cause of the world's problems, but we surely do have some wise solutions! Thanks, Geraldine Brooks, for the wonderful book! It has helped me grow!

Excellent documentation of life for Middle Eastern women

This is a horrifying look at life in a variety of so-called Islamic countries. Once a liberating religion of 7th-century Arabia, Islam was almost immediately taken over by extremists upon the death of the Prophet Muhammed. Today modern-day Islamic countries are cowed into submission by Islamic fundamentalists, and it should come as no surprise to anyone with any experience with religious fundamentalism that women once again get the short end of the stick.
Much of what passes for Islamic practice in modern-day Islamic countries is supported by neither the Koran nor the hadiths (anecdotes and teachings) of the Prophet. The author travelled all over the Middle East and presents both the good side and the bad side of Islamic practice today. She points out that life is not as repressive in Iran as it is in say, Saudi Arabia. She shows how the Palestinians used to be at the forefront of womens' rights in the Middle East and how they've since been consumed by the fundamentalists. She spoke to the women, the mullahs, the bureaucrats, the husbands--a wide variety of people in various cultures. She questions why the Moslems have adopted every misogynistic practice, from veiling to polygamy to female genital mutilation, from their pagan conquests as they spread Islam throughout that part of the world.
This is an excellent overview of the status of women in Moslem countries today. Amnesty International, take note...

A pretty great overview of organizational behavior

I'm a physician taking a graduate course in informatics and was assigned this (expensive) book for a class. It is actually a really fantastic book, well-organized, with just about the right level of detail. I took a lot away from this book with regard to issues like employee motivation, leadership, office politics, and other HR issues. I was pleased with this book.

Textbook, but easy to follow

We used this textbook for several courses in my Organizational Behavior program. Of all the texts we've used, this one has been the most valuable. The text is easy to read and is interesting, and the book offers a great deal of case studies to really emphasize the points. I attended an Organizational Behavior graduate level program that used this textbook. I was very impressed with the quality and consistency of writing. I have suffered through enough bad textbooks to appreciate decent writing and organization. This was superb.

This collection of vignettes about growing up features a protagonist named Buddy. The era is the late Seventies, the place is semifictional Cranwood in northern New Jersey, and Buddy's age is pre-to late teens. No matter what the decade, growing up is growing up-painful, embarrassing, traumatic, bittersweet-and it is ably captured here. We read of Buddy's encounter with the Wiener Man, his first multispeed bike, and how friend Kevin finds a way to rip off his stepfather. As Buddy matures story by story, he moves on to his first encounter with racial hatred, time on the football team, loss of virginity, senior prom, and so on until he is ready for college. Buddy has struggled into the adult world. In the last story we find a nice young man who would be easy to like should we happen to meet him. Perrotta, a new, young, fresh writer, remembers how it was to be young and writes with humor and clarity. Recommended.

Buddy, the mellow protagonist of this cycle of short stories, is just a regular guy growing up in New Jersey. We meet him when he's in the Boy Scouts and eager to add the Wonderful Wiener Man's signature to his autograph collection. By the last story, he's managed to survive the heartbreaks of high school. In spite of being surrounded by friends hell-bent on trouble and self-destruction, Buddy retains his openness, his glow, throughout adolescence. He survives fights, a shameful incident of racial intimidation, drug and alcohol indulgence, and various confused relationships with girls on the rebound. He plays football, gives it up to play the electric guitar, learns to drive, and has his first brush with death. Perrotta's young hero is sweet, generous, honest, and patient. If you've been lucky, you've known a Buddy or been one. As Perrotta's amusing title suggests, these coming-of-age tales are set in the dithery seventies, but he plays Buddy's genuineness against the era's grittiness without a single clich{‚}e. Young and alive in the 70's in New Jersey

Bad Haircut is a collection of short stories told in the first person by a kid Buddy who grows up from Cub Scout, in the first story, to college student in the last. It reminded me some of The Wanderers, by Richard Price, a book I much enjoyed and admired.

Overall the book has a light, humorous tone though it has some disturbing moments. The author has an appealing, unpretentious prose style - easy to read, good ear for vernacular, nicely noted details. I lived in that time and it all rings true.

The stories are each little slices of life. Some of the later ones are about girls Buddy is involved with. I'd say my favorite stories were Forgiveness and The Jane Pasco Fan Club.

This was my first experience with Perrotta. I think I'm going to check out some of his other stuff now. It was that good.

Centered around a boy named Buddy growing up in the 70's in a middle class suburban town in New Jersey, "Bad Haircut" is probably a semi-autobiographical portrayal of memories that have stayed with Tom Perrotta, a very talented author indeed. The stories are often poignant, though most are open ended and don't have that "aha!" moment that short story writers often strive for. We learn quite a bit about Buddy and his family through these vignettes, which are only loosely connected. Don't expect, though, to be blown away, as you may have been with Perrotta's "Little Children;" but there's certainly something very enjoyable about this collection of subtle stories giving us slices of Buddy's childhood. For me, it ended all too quickly -- I would have liked to follow Buddy at least through college and perhaps through his early post-graduate days (as a struggling young writer, no doubt).

Are You a Child of the 70s...?

Yes, you'll enjoy BAD HAIRCUT in a big way if you grew up in that strange decade we call the 70s, but you can enjoy it for many other reasons as well. If you enjoy short stories, this collection with a common protagonist, the autobiographical Buddy, is sure to whet your appetite for that most concise of genres. If you are a Tom Perrotta fan, you'll be pleased and surprised, as this book offers both the Perrotta hero you've become accustomed to in his novels (young-ish, male, funny) AND it offers the author at his most disciplined as a stylist. The stories contain little "fat," in other words, and thematically tackle all the major sources of boyhood angst from grade school days to college.

The collection starts with "Weiner Man," the tale of Buddy in the cub scouts, a man dressed in an oversized weiner outfit, and his mother who knew Weiner Man from high school. Sweet and strange, it's the perfect gateway into this frank collection. It is followed by stories involving dating, fighting, family, school, drugs, and alcohol. Just your typical, red-blooded New Jersey suburban upbringing, is all. But what a ride.

I feel this book is overlooked for two reasons -- it's an "early" work by an author who later became famous and it's a short story collection, which will always play second fiddle to the novel. Don't let it scare you away, however. Although anyone can enjoy this work, it's almost a sure bet if you're a male boomer out of the 'burbs. So go ahead. Get a haircut. Even if it's bad, they always grow out...

Outstanding accompaniment to the works of Zizek

Myers begins with quick reviews of the major influences on Zizek: Hegel, Marx, and Lacan. Thorough for those unfamiliar with these theorists but not insulting to those who know them well, these introductions set the stage for several chapters focusing on main themes, particularly on Zizek's exploration of Lacan's the Real and the Symbolic. Read with The Zizek Reader, it was very useful. Zizek's genuine contributions to Lacanian thought are powerful and politically practical.

A "jumping off point", but certainly not a nuanced account

As with most of the books in the Routledge Critical Thinker's series, this is a means to an end. If you are unfamiliar with the history of philosophy--specifically Zizek's triad of Marx, Hegel, and Lacan--this book will be incredibly helpful as you get your feet under you before approaching Zizek's texts.
That being said, this is certainly an oversimplification of Zizek's thought, and many of the summations of key ideas will need to be taken with a grain of salt as the reader approaches the actual works of Zizek.
Good for what it does (give you the basic groundwork to make sense of Zizek for yourself), but don't mistake it for any kind of replacement for grappling with Zizek's texts.

I have to say I found Myers's book to be by far the best of the summaries of Zizek's work

I've read a few books by Zizek and I wanted to know if my understanding of what he was writing was correct. I have to say I found Myers's book to be by far the best of the summaries of Zizek's work. Myers is a wonderful writer , he writes very clearly and intelligibly. My only problem is that I have come to the conclusion that, despite Zizek being lauded as a philosopher on par with the likes of Foucault, I have come to think that Zizek is quite mixed up and that his confusion can be traced back to the Lacanian notion of the 'Real'. It basically says there is an area of experience that cannot be known even indirectly. This is due to the failure of language to be able to completely capture reality. As Myers notes in his description of Lacan we are, according to Lacan, imprisoned in language. However this isn't the position that Hegel, Marx, Engels or Lenin took. They wrote tirelessly against the Kantians and neo Kantians, who claimed that human beings cannot directly know reality, that humanity is able in fact to approximate or mirror reality, perhaps not perfectly and sometimes quite grotesquely, but humanity does approximate it. And what's more that their approximations continually improve. In other words there can be no 'Real' or area of unknowability in human experience .
Sean Sayers has written an excellent book called 'Reality and Reason; Dialectic and the Theory of Knowledge' in which he demonstrates that the whole notion of being a prisoner of language found in accounts of Freud influenced by structuralism are incorrect and inconsistent with Freud's approach to the unconscious. And that this notion of humanity being imprisoned in language is even more incorrect when it comes to a any claim of allegiance with the writings of Hegel, Marx, Engels and Lenin. If this is the case then it pretty much blows a hole through Zizek's supposed synthesis of the work of these writers with Lacan. This of course doesn't mean that Zizek's work is worthless but it does mean that it needs to be properly critiqued and corrected and placed within a more appropriate framework. For those who are interested I think there's a master's thesis or even a dissertation waiting to be written regarding this.
