Outstanding accompaniment to the works of Zizek

Myers begins with quick reviews of the major influences on Zizek: Hegel, Marx, and Lacan. Thorough for those unfamiliar with these theorists but not insulting to those who know them well, these introductions set the stage for several chapters focusing on main themes, particularly on Zizek's exploration of Lacan's the Real and the Symbolic. Read with The Zizek Reader, it was very useful. Zizek's genuine contributions to Lacanian thought are powerful and politically practical.

A "jumping off point", but certainly not a nuanced account

As with most of the books in the Routledge Critical Thinker's series, this is a means to an end. If you are unfamiliar with the history of philosophy--specifically Zizek's triad of Marx, Hegel, and Lacan--this book will be incredibly helpful as you get your feet under you before approaching Zizek's texts.
That being said, this is certainly an oversimplification of Zizek's thought, and many of the summations of key ideas will need to be taken with a grain of salt as the reader approaches the actual works of Zizek.
Good for what it does (give you the basic groundwork to make sense of Zizek for yourself), but don't mistake it for any kind of replacement for grappling with Zizek's texts.

I have to say I found Myers's book to be by far the best of the summaries of Zizek's work

I've read a few books by Zizek and I wanted to know if my understanding of what he was writing was correct. I have to say I found Myers's book to be by far the best of the summaries of Zizek's work. Myers is a wonderful writer , he writes very clearly and intelligibly. My only problem is that I have come to the conclusion that, despite Zizek being lauded as a philosopher on par with the likes of Foucault, I have come to think that Zizek is quite mixed up and that his confusion can be traced back to the Lacanian notion of the 'Real'. It basically says there is an area of experience that cannot be known even indirectly. This is due to the failure of language to be able to completely capture reality. As Myers notes in his description of Lacan we are, according to Lacan, imprisoned in language. However this isn't the position that Hegel, Marx, Engels or Lenin took. They wrote tirelessly against the Kantians and neo Kantians, who claimed that human beings cannot directly know reality, that humanity is able in fact to approximate or mirror reality, perhaps not perfectly and sometimes quite grotesquely, but humanity does approximate it. And what's more that their approximations continually improve. In other words there can be no 'Real' or area of unknowability in human experience .
Sean Sayers has written an excellent book called 'Reality and Reason; Dialectic and the Theory of Knowledge' in which he demonstrates that the whole notion of being a prisoner of language found in accounts of Freud influenced by structuralism are incorrect and inconsistent with Freud's approach to the unconscious. And that this notion of humanity being imprisoned in language is even more incorrect when it comes to a any claim of allegiance with the writings of Hegel, Marx, Engels and Lenin. If this is the case then it pretty much blows a hole through Zizek's supposed synthesis of the work of these writers with Lacan. This of course doesn't mean that Zizek's work is worthless but it does mean that it needs to be properly critiqued and corrected and placed within a more appropriate framework. For those who are interested I think there's a master's thesis or even a dissertation waiting to be written regarding this.
