Rogue Warrior of the SAS: The Blair Mayne Legend, by Martin Dillon, Roy Bradford

A revealing biography of the most decorated soldier of World War II

More than half a century after his death, Lt Col. Robert Blair Mayne is still regarded as one of the greatest soldiers in the history of military special operations. He was the most decorated British soldier of World War II, receiving four DSOs, the Croix de Guerre, and the Lgion d'honneur, and he pioneered tactics used today by the SAS and other special operations units worldwide. Rogue Warrior of the SAS tells the remarkable life story of "Colonel Paddy," whose exceptional physical strength and uniquely swift reflexes made him a fearsome opponent. But his unorthodox rules of war and his resentment of authority would deny him the ultimate accolade of the Victoria Cross. Mayne also had a conflicted personal life, dominated by his mother. He never married and several of his contemporaries felt that his resentment of gays in the military reflected his concerns about his own sexuality. Mayne was undoubtedly a complex character and here the authors have presented a rounded and perceptive portrait of the man. Drawing on personal letters and family papers, declassified SAS files and records, together with the Official SAS Diary compiled in wartime and eyewitness accounts from many who served with him, the picture emerges of a soldier who, although a flawed hero, was unquestionably one of the most distinctive combatants of the campaigns in the Western Desert and Europe.

Unbeliveable!
By blueox
This man was unbeliveable. He was a superman-superstrong, and he knew just what to do to win. The book is excellent reading, with an insite into the SAS in world war two. Paddy Mayne was a really interesting individual. I recommend this book.

British military history
By Juanita Mcmullan
This book was recommended by a friend, who lives in Australia. It was history to him, as it was to my husband. My husband enjoyed it, said it was hard to put down. He was in the British Forces.

The book was in excellent condition, clean - looked new!

Fast service.

HOMERIC FIGURE OF GREEK TRAGEDY
By M Clement Hall
The authors have had access to a large volume of personal documents and the SAS war diaries, together with extensive personal discussions with surviving participants in SAS activities. The book is more than a biography of its named principle character. The surviving author, like Paddy Mayne, is an Ulsterman which gives him insight into that particular character. Paddy, great hero of the SAS, was an Homeric figure who loved combat, and true to the needs of Greek Tragedy, met an early death from violence.
But the book does more than that. It gives an insight into the proper use of small scale independent raiding parties, and also their improper use in going point for the major army. It describes the ugly nature of close quarter person to person combat from the mouths of those who engaged in it, and is not for the squeamish or those who think war is for gentlemen. In an addendum Dillon ventures into a discussion of Mayne's personality which is of great interest.
